Watched the Phillies feed tonight and it was very pleasant. Nice to have broadcasters that don't have to fill every second of airtime. Well worth the price for that reason alone.

I swear 5x a week it's Pillar who gets interviewed after the game. All it takes is 1 catch, 1 double, 1 HR, 1 anything and he's the chosen one. Don't get me wrong, well deserved today.

Of course he is.. he's superman.

In all honesty though he's been the most pleasant surprise the last 1 1/2 years.

Tabler "Hitting home runs is not about how hard you swing", very next sentence "it's a combination of bat speed and..."

I'm not an expert, but isn't how hard you swing the same thing as bat speed?

So you want RA and Thole back next season?

I want to win. RA Dickey does a lot of good for this team. The difference between Thole and an average backup is negligible.

Unless you can upgrade in the rotation its not a terrible option. It all depends on how Dickey pitches.

Barely saw this one but it looks like the Jays basically threw the covers over the Phillies and did a dutch oven. Good to see.

I was at the game and Happ was cruising through the first 6 innings.

We had as many home runs as the Phillies did hits.

You should follow the team to Baltimore. Just don't get stabbed please. That place is a complete s*** hole.

Unfortunately because of my job I am needed to work 6 or 7 days a week 5am-130 so traveling for things like these is difficult. Hell, it's 11pm and I have to be up in 4 and a half hours for work tomorrow so I can barely go to Phillies games haha.

No because a "hard swing" usually results in extending the arms, letting your center of gravity fly outward, and slowing down the bat as a result. That's why you never see an outside pitch pulled for a home run no matter how hard the batter swings.

Maximizing bat speed requires keeping the barrel of the bat close to the body, which means keeping the elbows bent and the swing compact. It doesn't feel like a hard swing when you do it but it does yield maximum bat speed. That's why selecting a pitch middle-in is so key to hitting homers.

It seems like Tabler and some people on this board have no clue about physics.

??? What in the hell ??? Are you braindead or something.

Hard swing = bat speed... there is no question about this.

What you may trying to say is... "If your technique sucks you will not be able to swing hard no matter how hard you swing because your technique sucks"

or

"at some point increasing effort may lead to bad technique, thus the hardest swing will occur with the maximum level of effort one can exert while maintaining a nice swing"

Hard swing = bat speed... there is no question about this.

Hard Swing = lots of energy (E)

Bat speed = angular velocity (w)

the relationship between these is given by E=0.5(I)(w)^2

I is the moment of inertia, which is what everyone is talking about here. It can be expressed as the product of the mass of the object and the square of the average distance of the center of mass of the object from the axis of rotation.

Assuming you always swing with the same effort, if you put more of the mass farther away from the axis of rotation, your moment of inertia will be larger and your bat speed will be slower in order to keep the energy constant.

so there is in fact a question about how fast your bat will be, even if you are swinging hard. This is why guys like David Eckstein choke up so much, so they can actually get some bat speed despite being super weak and not being able to put much energy into their swing. i.e not swinging hard, but still getting bat speed. It's also why you get better results swinging at inside pitches than outside ones - your bat is closer to the axis of rotation.

Hope I've cleared up some of your confusion, and that you will stop resorting to insults when you clearly have very little understanding of the subject matter.

I'm going to just assume this is the correct answer but not assume Pat Tabler knew why they were different.
