2lowitzki Verified Member Posted May 24, 2016 Posted May 24, 2016 Hope everyone is enjoying nice weather in Toronto. I saw the weather forecast and it will be mostly sunny except few thunderstorms during mid week. The temperature will be at mid to high 20s. I believe it is a time to open the roof at the dome. And I think the roof usually opens around May, right? I'm going to the game on Friday, and do you think they will open the roof if the weather is great on Friday?
HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted May 24, 2016 Posted May 24, 2016 If the Jays had a home series this past weekend I'm sure it would have been opened. It takes a few days of testing IIRC and a few weeks of above 0 temperatures before they could have tested it. This whole week is going to be rainy so you won't see it open. It's going to be hot and muggy with scattered thunderstorms.
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted May 24, 2016 Posted May 24, 2016 Roof probably opens for the Yankee series next week

G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted May 24, 2016 Posted May 24, 2016 Use this to know for sure before the game http://www.isthedomeopen.com/
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted May 24, 2016 Posted May 24, 2016 It'll be open on the weekend against Boston, they've already had it open last week and during the past weekend.
Yorkshire Blue Jay Verified Member Posted May 24, 2016 Posted May 24, 2016 If the weather is forecast to be less than 50% chance of rain and well over 10deg Celsius at scheduled game finish time then the roof will be open. It was fully opened last week for testing. I am going to the weekend series and fully expect it to be open on Friday evening.
candymartinez Verified Member Posted May 24, 2016 Posted May 24, 2016 I'll never go to a game ever again in April or May. You can go on a day like today and it'll be closed. RIDICULOUS. Then they'll say they have to "test it" more, like the roof is going to fall down on everyone or something.

IIRC there has to be so many days above 15 degrees or something... be tested and get the go ahead from Government safety officials.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted May 24, 2016 Posted May 24, 2016 Temperature expansion and contraction of metal and concrete..... likely more to do with overnight low temperatures and temperature differential between inside face and outside face (open to atmosphere) of the materials. Current air temperature not the only criterion. Even in mid June if the overnight low dips to 4 or 5 degrees with daytime temperature in the 20's, may not be opened (or closed) due to temperature differential and warping of material
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted May 24, 2016 Posted May 24, 2016 I hope it opens and they can't close it. It should only be closed when its raining that's it.

So you're depriving yourself the opportunity to enjoy watching baseball live because the roof is closed?
intentional wok Old-Timey Member Posted May 24, 2016 Posted May 24, 2016 So you're depriving yourself the opportunity to enjoy watching baseball live because the roof is closed? The closed dome feels like you're watching the game in a warehouse, though. It's just so drab. Unless the team is absolutely raking I'd honestly prefer to watch at home if the dome is going to be closed on a sunny day.
Rovert Verified Member Posted May 24, 2016 Posted May 24, 2016 When did this become a thing , i was at games back in the day 90's-2000 and they would open the dome half way through a game , even got to see it get stuck half open 1 time

It feels really weird if the dome is closed.. and feels more weird when I'm on 500 level. It feels less weird at 100 and 200 level.
fatcowxlive Old-Timey Member Posted May 25, 2016 Posted May 25, 2016 If they're going to open the roof, the perfect time would be the 2 day games this weekend. I don't think they're gonna open the roof at night this month yet

IIRC there has to be so many days above 15 degrees or something... be tested and get the go ahead from Government safety officials. I would like to see what rule or law there is in regards to opening up a roof. Temperature expansion and contraction of metal and concrete..... likely more to do with overnight low temperatures and temperature differential between inside face and outside face (open to atmosphere) of the materials. Current air temperature not the only criterion. Even in mid June if the overnight low dips to 4 or 5 degrees with daytime temperature in the 20's, may not be opened (or closed) due to temperature differential and warping of material Even if that's true. There isn't a reason it can't be open on a nice April/May day. What's really going to happen? The roof is just going to start falling down when they open it up? Odds are pretty low that will happen. And if it does, postpone the game, not a big deal. Plenty of games around the MLB are postponed in the spring. So you're depriving yourself the opportunity to enjoy watching baseball live because the roof is closed? I wouldn't say I'm depriving myself. I'll go to 3-4 games a year and I'd rather go when the roof is open, much better atmosphere. I'd rather watch at home then at the Dome with the roof closed. When did this become a thing , i was at games back in the day 90's-2000 and they would open the dome half way through a game , even got to see it get stuck half open 1 time I remember that. I just think it's Rogers being cheap and trying to save money on hydro.

What would happen is the expanded metal would cause the track that the roof glides open on to jam, forcing the motor that powers it to burn out or force it open and damage the track, meaning the roof would then be closed all year. Why would you want that? Why, Candy? WHY?!
gbill2004 Verified Member Posted May 25, 2016 Posted May 25, 2016 Rogers is making up excuses to not have to open it, since opening the roof costs money. Rogers = tightwads.

Yorkshire Blue Jay Verified Member Posted May 26, 2016 Posted May 26, 2016 Inclement weather and low night temperatures this spring has meant that the testing was really late taking place. In fact 1 or maybe 2 of the Dodger games would be the only ones where I believe the roof would have been opened so a couple of games at most have been affected by the late testing. I don't think this will become a thing, we had May night games with the roof open only last year. Friday's low overnight temp forecast is something like 18 deg, so temperature will not be a factor for any of the weekend series, though ill timed rain showers could be a different issue.
500LevelSTH Verified Member Posted May 26, 2016 Posted May 26, 2016 The roof has been open many times already this month, its like rogers doesnt want the roof open, more fans are apt to attend with open air vs closed. Once the roof is fully upgraded, it wont be affected by the 18 degree rule and will be able to open earlier in the season.
