BTS Community Moderator Posted April 7, 2016 Posted April 7, 2016 Gibby fired. More likely: - Something about new dirt - Storen DL - Donaldson DL (cries at the thought) Gibby being fired 4 games into Shatkins' tenure would be one of the most hilarious developments in team history.
ValiantJaysFan Verified Member Posted April 7, 2016 Posted April 7, 2016 Likely they're talking about how excited they are for the home opener.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted April 7, 2016 Posted April 7, 2016 Ppl are reading too much into this Gibbons is an idiot. He wants to give the ball to guys and see what they have No. They brought Storen in to pitch in situations exactly like the 8th yesterday. You don't "try" totally unproven guys out in close divisional games with runners on base.
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted April 7, 2016 Posted April 7, 2016 Basically by making sexist comments Gibbons isn't showing that he is not respecting of women. He may be that He is showing that he is too stupid to understand that comments like that will come back to haunt him
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted April 7, 2016 Posted April 7, 2016 Oh for f***'s sake I hope he doesn't apologize for that. Why not? It was a plainly sexist comment. If Y.Escobar can (rather stupidly) be run out of a town for a comment on his bloody eye black than surely Gibbons can apologize for a statement made directly to the media. Even if you deny the sexism, trying to nip this in the bud is the obvious thing to do.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted April 7, 2016 Posted April 7, 2016 Yeah it could be just PR I'm just hoping no DL for Donaldson

No apology is necessary. And apologizing isn't going to appease those people or nip anything in the bud, they go around finding pathetic things to get worked up about no matter what. Apologizing only gives credence to the phony outrage.

To me it's about as obvious as it gets but whatever you don't agree but instead of listening you caricature and dismiss objections as phony. That only makes the discourse worse not better.
BTS Community Moderator Posted April 7, 2016 Posted April 7, 2016 Why are we still talking about his comment? This outrage culture is ridiculous.
z3r0s Old-Timey Member Posted April 7, 2016 Posted April 7, 2016 Why are we still talking about his comment? This outrage culture is ridiculous. The whole thing is a joke now. A big competition to see who can be the most offended. It isn't virtuous to be offended. It doesn't fix anything.

I'm sure there's plenty of garbage on Twitter or whatever but on a basic level what's so bad about holding Gibbons accountable for a very unfortunate public comment? It's that really too much to ask? At least give people some credit. To just paint anyone bothered by Gibbons's comments as insincere is ********. I physically cringed when that sexist crap left his mouth just like I cringe at Zaun's use of the word sissies.

To dwell on the issue until he makes a public apology is already more than I think is necessary. I think it would be fine for his boss to let him know that's not acceptable. But guaranteed, if he does apologize publicly, that won't be enough for the critics. Its been proven time and time again that if you give them an inch, they will insist nothing but a mile will do.

You're assuming that everyone who might be critical of him is a zealot. It's not a mono-culture. It doesn't makes sense to refuse to recognize the criticism just because you assume the worst of ALL of his critics.
intentional wok Old-Timey Member Posted April 7, 2016 Posted April 7, 2016 Kat's just saying that one can vehemently disagree with whomever is outraged without dismissing them with pejoratives. Maybe one day someone of the "outrage" culture will have a good point but we'll all miss it because we've already mentally labeled them as feminist = stupid, or somesuch. I think the outrage vs. Gibbons is ridiculous (again) but I can see why what he said might be obnoxious to some. If he said "maybe we'll just play like girls", I think most here would agree that it was a s***** thing to say. But he said "wear dresses" instead, so if someone makes the link that wearing dresses = being girls, the outrage makes sense, I guess. I, and my girlfriend, just took the comment to mean that the league is becoming too delicate and dainty and, if a woman coach had said it, that meaning would have been a lot more obvious.

I don't know how we can ever expect to have genuine debate on these kinds of issues when there's such a refusal to even acknowledge the sincerity of criticism you disagree with.

It doesn't makes sense to refuse to recognize the criticism just because you assume the worst of ALL of his critics. I don't think I'm doing that at all. I am assuming that there is some portion of the critics who will act in this way, and that its not wise to try and cater to their outrage. I didn't hear the comment, but my thoughts are that if I had I would have probably though "hmm, well that's a pretty s***** thing to say". Then I'd hope someone explained to him that it's not really acceptable, and I would never think about it again. That is recognizing the criticism. This hasn't been a pervasive issue for him, so why make a mountain out of a molehill (if this is in fact a presser for him to formally apologize, which we don't know yet).

Maahfaace Verified Member Posted April 7, 2016 Posted April 7, 2016 Here's a thought, with all the cross dressing Transgender folk these days, I'm offended that the women are the most outraged by this comment! How do we know Jose doesn't prance around in a dress while in private? Maybe now he's offended that all the offended women think they're the only ones allowed to be offended when referring to dresses in a offensive tone?

But you could just as easily argue (and I would) that resistance to him apologizing (if indeed he is) is also making a mountain of a molehill. What is the big deal about him apologizing for saying something that a lot of people in society (but apparently hardly anyone on this board) would deem a pretty darn stupid thing to say?

If anything they are non-issues. People who make a fuss over petty s*** like this should be mocked and disregarded so they quit doing it. If you engage them in debate and try to reason with them (newsflash: they won't accept reason) you immediately give credence to their ******** viewpoint which fuels the unwarranted outrage.

To me it's about as obvious as it gets but whatever you don't agree but instead of listening you caricature and dismiss objections as phony. That only makes the discourse worse not better. Anecdote: I was talking to my fiancee about this, and I asked her how she felt, as a woman. She said she couldn't really give a s*** and can't even understand why someone would get upset over something that trivial. She also said he probably has a point because it would be a lot harder to slide in a dress. I look at it in a kind of weird way; I find the entire narrative that women are weaker than men to be hilarious, and the ones who constantly push it are the ones who are fighting against it, somehow. Women aren't weaker or worse than men. In terms of physical strength, sure, but I choose to not even entertain the notion that this is debatable and laugh it off as Gibby being dumb. It's kind of like how a lot of gay guys act like huge homophobes before coming out. If you really think Gibbons' comment can be taken seriously, you must think that women are weak to some degree. And for that, you're a sexist, misogynist pig.

z3r0s Old-Timey Member Posted April 7, 2016 Posted April 7, 2016 If you feel the need to publicly apologize, this is something that can be done in one of the 100 interviews he'll do in the coming weeks. Its inflating the seriousness of the transgression to hold a conference for this alone (which to reiterate, we still don't know they are doing). It sends a signal that this is a huge issue. It's simply not. It is an issue, but a pretty f***ing minimal one.
