THANOS Old-Timey Member Posted April 22, 2016 Posted April 22, 2016 Martin and Tulo's contracts are a bit unsettling. Martin is owed another 3/60 for his age 34-36 season and Tulo another 4/78 for 32-35 seasons, and both are already projected as league-average hitters. This is why you don't follow the Yankees model on a mid-tier payroll. Even some of the other variables which prompted the Martin signing haven't been as advertised this season, like his pitch framing, game calling, etc. At some point a change is in order. Is Tewksbary already in our system? He could be a good choice to try and shake things up with our offense?

I think everyone has been caught off guard by how quickly awful framers have been purged from the league. Martin is going to have to hit more than we all thought he would to carry value for the length of his contract.

Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted April 22, 2016 Posted April 22, 2016 I have to admit, his framing has been a major disappointment. As a former catcher i could say "Framing depends of pitchers". Maybe he's ajusting to new pitchers (New Stroman, New Sanchez, Estrada Navarro guy, Happ, Floyd, Chavez, Biagini)
glory Old-Timey Member Posted April 22, 2016 Posted April 22, 2016 The Pirates let Martin go, traded for Cervelli, and upgraded. Not fair. Yeah, the Martin and Tulo contracts look scary. I still say Dave Stewart can save the Jays from Tulo assuming he would waive his NTC for Arizona, but Martin looks unmovable at $20m per for the three years after this one. AA knew what he was doing by back loading that contract in his walk year.

KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted April 22, 2016 Posted April 22, 2016 No surprise. The Pirates are a smart organization. Of all the mistakes AA has made, committing to Arencibia probably had the biggest consequences. Traded both Gomes in D'Arnaud in terrible deals and missed out on Martin while he was still cheap. Imagine going back into a time machine and either undoing those trades or at least locking up Martin when he was younger.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted April 22, 2016 Posted April 22, 2016 Martin has been one of the better framers this season? Top 5 among starting catchers. He's also been amazing at blocking balls in the dirt so far. Everyone knew those last couple of years at $20 million would be steep but do people forget we got a steal at $7 million last season? http://www.baseballprospectus.com/sortable/index.php?cid=1899492

burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted April 22, 2016 Posted April 22, 2016 AA doesn't forget. muhahahaha I don't see the problem with the contract. Rogers was the one set the budget, he did what he had to to fit him in the payroll structure. Plus if equal money its better to backload it since inflation decreases the value of it.

I know that silly, I just mean GMs can backload contracts and then jump ship before their hands get tied up with aging, expensive players.

Hal Johnson Verified Member Posted April 22, 2016 Posted April 22, 2016 Someone posted this epic staredown of Bautista and the Ump on reddit. https://gfycat.com/RealisticRepentantBandicoot That ump is ridiculous. He's terrible at his job, and has small penis syndrome to boot. He's trying to bait Bautista into something, anything, to even remotely justify an ejection. His quick ejection of Wieters was completely stupid, and unprofessional. News flash to ump: it's not about you! I remember a bunch of problems with this guy last season as well.
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted April 22, 2016 Posted April 22, 2016 Can confirm I have big penis syndrome. Nothing bothers me.

Well it just makes financial sense to backload most contracts if given the choice. Nothing to do with GMs jumping ship.

Governator Community Moderator Posted April 22, 2016 Posted April 22, 2016 Well it just makes financial sense to backload most contracts if given the choice. Nothing to do with GMs jumping ship. Why is it financially better to backload a contract for an aging player? If you can afford to do it without backloading you have a moveable trade chip if things decline later in the contract.

Same reason you are seeing some contracts with differed money now.

There's no point giving money to the player at the front of the contract when (if he declines), you can just send money along with the player to the team you're trading with. You can always make the trade chip more moveable by just adding money. Good points gentlemen

Time value of money suggests that backloading might be better in a strict financial sense, but having what are probably the worst years of the contract attached to the biggest financial commitment makes unloading those years a lot more difficult. There's also no reason to backload a deal that you can comfortably fit in at present without backloading. You have no idea what the financial state of your team will be in 4-8 years.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted April 22, 2016 Posted April 22, 2016 Yeah. Like I said to Gov. inflation makes the value of money decrease over time so if it was the exact same cost it makes sense to pay the money in 4 or 5 years where the value of say $20 million won't be as high. You would need to have a good owner though who understands the strategy.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted April 22, 2016 Posted April 22, 2016 Its like if I go buy furniture or a TV from Leon's and they give you the option of no payment or interest for 24 months. Even though I could afford it now its smarter to wait because the value of that money will be less in 2 years with inflation. I just have to be smart and not spend the money I allocated for that furniture for those 2 years.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted April 22, 2016 Posted April 22, 2016 Geezus look at that lineup for tonight. Zeke at leadoff, Barney at #9. Tulo and Saunders on the bench. Hmm don't see Cola on there either, not even listed on the bench.

Zeke needs a good night--especially with Michael Bourn being a possibility within a week or two..
Governator Community Moderator Posted April 22, 2016 Posted April 22, 2016 Carerra lead off. What the flying f***. If you are sitting Saunders just move everyone up for a game. ffs, Smoak is a better lead off man.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted April 22, 2016 Posted April 22, 2016 So Girado was called up. Cola not on the lineup card was he DFA'd? Come one TO media let's get on this

glory Old-Timey Member Posted April 22, 2016 Posted April 22, 2016 Maybe Cola was optioned for Girado to add an extra arm while Chavez is still hurt? My god that lineup is derpy even by Gibby's standards.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted April 22, 2016 Posted April 22, 2016 Girado's numbers in the minors don't look too bad. Could be a guy.
