Carlos Santana leadoff for the Indians today. Francona said OBP > speed when it comes to the leadoff role. Tito: "If you're running back to the dugout fast, that's no good."

Can we talk about the 6 man rotation?

I remember someone suggesting this awhile back and said person preceded to get BTFO by everyone on this board (no it wasn't me)

I can't remember the reasoning on why it was such a bad idea but now that it has happened nobody seems to care.

Its not a 6 man rotation. Hutch is just doing a spot start Sunday then going back down to the minors. Just giving the starting 5 an extra day, thats all.

But you can always add in money to a deal to make a trade more attractive to other teams. If you had that money saved from the backloaded deal you could use it to unload the player.

I think you are right in that a player would always prefer a front loaded deal if given the choice but I think now a days where the contracts are getting to be so big that some of it is union related. The Union wants the contract number to be as high as possible so maybe there is some leeway in getting the player to accept a backloaded deal or deferred money since the amount of money they are getting is so high in the first place.

I enjoy this debate...

Let Smoak lead off (over Zeke)

Ross Atkins needs to make a move for a position player. I know he's a rookie GM but his roster management had been terrible this year.

He is salivating at the thought of trading EE and Bautista for prospects. Not to mention firing Gibby

I don't think it's anything like that. A contract is just part of a larger payroll. The goal is to fit as many wins as possible under that payroll. Take a player signed for $82M over 5 years. Say you project him at around 3, 2.5, 2, 1, 0.5 over the next 5 years:

backloaded at 7, 15, 20, 20, 20 you're paying the following per WAR:

year 1 = 2.333

year 2 = 6

year 3 = 10

year 4 = 20

year 5 = 40

say you do the reverse and frontload it

year 1 = 6.666

year 2 = 8

year 3 = 10

year 4 = 15

year 5 = 14

With the frontloaded contract you've avoided any albatross seasons where the projected production relative to salary will make it difficult to accrue enough WAR to make the potseason. The years where he's paid 20M, he provides production enough to warrant it. When the production dips, so does the financial burden, so you have the cash to replace his wins. It's very difficult for a mid-tier team to compete in years where they're paying 20M for near replacement level production.

And you might be able to get out of the frontloaded contract:

total contract = 9M/WAR

out after year 2 = 7.3M/WAR (likely only possible if frontloaded)

out after year 3 = 8M/WAR (likely only possible if frontloaded)

For a player, it makes sense to get as much money as possible up front (the leon's example applies to them). They might even take less money overall for a frontloaded deal. That would make it a no-brainer if the team has enough money under the budget in year one to frontload.

It's definitely more beneficial to have front loaded contracts, for both the player and the team. But the main reason you don't see it any sport is directly related to the lifespan of GMs with one team. Signing Tulo to an eight year front loaded deal more than likely will not have any benefits for the current GM, as the odds of him being employed for the entirety of said contract is slim. Backloading on the other hand, allows GMs to squeze more talent on a team with a limited budget, while pushing the s*** years of contract onto what is more than likely a different managing group.

It really is a ridiculous practice that has so many negative future effects. If I was Shapiro I would of asked for a 15 year contract and implemented a policy of no back loaded contracts either through trade or signing.

Interesting piece on Tulo and slowed reaction time and a possible solution: http://www.fangraphs.com/community/the-tulowitzki-hypothesis/

Pretty good article and I'd be inclined to agree with a lot of his points. Thats why I wanted him to keep his leg kick since I felt it would help him get his swing started sooner so he wasn't always late on fastballs.

A lighter bat is an interesting topic but I highly doubt he would switch it. Players are so anal about the weight of their bats being perfect to the tenth of an ounce that it would seem like too difficult of an adjustment in-season.

why do you say this?

Well, you don't have to squint to see that the bench on the team is pretty much garbage. Our backup catcher sux, our 4th outfielder sux, and there's 2 glove only infielders (once Travis comes back). Theres really no reliable power, speed or outfield defense on the bench.

There is reliable infield defense. Thats about it.

Tonight's lineup. I thought they were going to make a move to bring in another bench player after yesterday's game? Any word on that?

There's the full card. No Girardo so I assume he's on his way back down.

But wouldn't Hutch be sent back down as well or are they actually going to go with a 6 man rotation? Either Girardo and Hutch being sent down and two guys coming up or Girardo is being sent down and a 6 man rotation is going to be utilized.

Girado has already been sent down for when Hutch came up.

Makes zero sense for Hutch to still be here unless he's making another start.

I forget where I read it but he's up today and being sent back down tomorrow.

Hum... Maybe that's when Ceciliani gets activated.
