CrackerJack Verified Member Posted April 12, 2016 Posted April 12, 2016 Why would Gibby getting fired mean the season went down the toilet? Fire him now and get a manager who knows not to lead Pillar off and that knows how to use a bullpen and bam this teeam shouldnt have a problem making the playoffss Same thing has been said before ... "Will never win with Gibby." hahaha (You'd think fans would learn about the impact of managers on already playoff bound teams.) How 'bout they keep him and they'll be in the playoffs again.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted April 12, 2016 Posted April 12, 2016 So Shi Davidi just said on the broadcast that Andrew Miller SVP of strategy and business analytics will be coming over to replace Brooks. I think this leaves little doubt Brooks was fired. This will be a good move for Rogers bottom line but not likely for fans. Expect ticket pricing to change.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted April 12, 2016 Posted April 12, 2016 Gibby's not going to get fired over that. No gm worth his salt is going to risky disrupting his clubhouse over something that will have so little impact on win probability. Unless you want to tank the last Bautista/EE season, you don't want Gibby fired. You're just going to have to accept that. Based on the way the front office played out the roster this season, I think they are keeping Gibby until 2017. The 2016 team is basically AA's team with more depth. Letting Gibbons finish out the AA/Bautista era and then starting fresh when things turn over (in 2017 or 2018) is probably the way they want to go. In the mean time, we have to continue to watch Wobbles try to manage a big league club, which will be torture.
BTS Community Moderator Posted April 13, 2016 Posted April 13, 2016 ZiPS now has Colabello at a 99 wRC+ rest of season (Steamer 104). I'm really looking forward to the day when this guy isn't on the roster anymore.

You run the risk of having to make an unpopular decision down the road.

I hope its not the end of Cola but a guy with those D limitations can only stay on this roster if he produces well above avg offensively. I think he is the BABIP pumpkin most predicted he would be. It was a good story I loved, while it lasted. Gibby is going to have to get over the emotional connection to this guy. A lot of fans had no idea the rate at which this guy K'ed last year. All was forgiven cause the balls just kept landing in the right place. Edited April 13, 2016 by BigCecil

I know I've made it no secret, but I really dislike him as a player. A 32-year old 100 wRC+ 1B who gives runs back on the bases and is probably a bit below average defensively even at first doesn't deserve a full-time job on a good MLB roster.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted April 13, 2016 Posted April 13, 2016 If they had signed Bautista, it would really make all the sense in the world to start easing him into more DH or 1B starts and give OF start to Pompey (or even Ceciliani). With Jose only hear for one year though, I don't know if they risk disrupting him for something that's not a long term thing. On the other hand, if you assume that the front office already has something like this in mind, it would explain why they didn't invest any real money into 1B.

I would assume his timing is screwed up right now. Go from a leg kick all spring then change it back to the toe tap in his second at bat of the regular season can't be good for his timing.

I know Tulo would never say it publicly but I wonder if he says he feels his past injuries have taken a toll on him physically. I mean last year's injury was pretty serious that everyone seems to just forget.

Do you think if they moved him to DH it'd lower his off-season value and piss him off? Not that I think the Jays should screw over Bats but I think finding a way to bring up Pompey or Ceciliani to play every day would help this team.

It ended his 2014 season, and since then he has a 95 wRC+ in 567 regular season PA and 66 wRC+ in 46 playoff PA and his K-rate has increased dramatically while his power has been sapped. Colorado doesn't trade Tulo for the return they got if they think he's healthy, normal, productive Tulo going forward. Maybe he'll rebound, but that's over 600 PA of pretty bad performance directly after a pretty serious surgery.

If there is anything that makes me feel better about it his hard hit rate and batted ball profile last year look pretty similar to that of his career so I think the power should return. The strikeouts on the other hand seem like a bad trend.. In 2012 and 2013 his whiff rate was under 5% (incredible) but its crept all the way up to over 10%. Hopefully the new high perf. dept can do some magic.

Votto had a couple lean power years after he had lower body non hip labrum issues. But his pop has returned, so I really hope same can happen for Tulo. Even with loss of power that doesn't explain the reduced contact rates does it? Bat speed loss? He is maintaining his BB rate which you would expect.
Daniel Labude Jays Centre Contributor Posted April 13, 2016 Posted April 13, 2016 By mid-May, Pompey will be a starting outfielder on this team, in place of Saunders or Pillar.....just a prediction from what I have seen.
Governator Community Moderator Posted April 13, 2016 Posted April 13, 2016 By mid-May, Pompey will be a starting outfielder on this team, in place of Saunders or Pillar.....just a prediction from what I have seen. I hope so, though he's not going to replace Pillar on the field. JBats & Saunders should cycle the DH spot since Saunders seemingly needs regular rest and Pompey upgrades Bautista on the field. He can play as a starter with that set up, move EE to first and Colabello can go back to the independant league. Give Pompey a solid month+ at lead off and see how he progresses.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted April 13, 2016 Posted April 13, 2016 Do you think if they moved him to DH it'd lower his off-season value and piss him off? Yes I do and I suspect that they don't want to get into it with Bautista when he's not a long term asset anyways. That being said, as a pure baseball move, Bautista is begging to be a DH (or 1B). Smoakabello is the only thing standing between him and the move so the door isn't exactly slammed shut.

If he has a good 2016 season, then I would ask him which teams he'd be willing to be traded to and try to work out a deal. He does not strike me as a player who will age gracefully. Dave Stewart might trade for him after the season. Guts, heart, leadership, and stuff.
