Cyborg Verified Member Posted March 30, 2016 Posted March 30, 2016 Sanchez is the 3rd starter? I thought that would be Happ Hes the "5th" starter but in the 3rd spot. My guess is they wanted the most velocity following Dickey.
CultofShatkins Verified Member Posted March 30, 2016 Posted March 30, 2016 #BlueJays' bench assuming EE avoids DL: •C Josh Thole •IF Darwin Barney •OF Ezequiel Carrera •1B/DH Justin Smoak Ugh...That's gross Yep.
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted March 30, 2016 Posted March 30, 2016 Osuna as closer is probably Gibby though lol trolled. But if Shatkins aren't going to have Osuna starting somewhere then might as well let the kid close. Who cares at this point. I'm not even sure how this could be considered a troll. Probably at least 28/30 MLB teams use their best reliever as their closer, if not all of them. Osuna is our best reliever, not to mention the incumbent.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted March 30, 2016 Posted March 30, 2016 Let's be real, the team's best reliever will be pitching in the 7th inning this year. Regardless, I think most of the anger comes from Zeke making it and Tepera possibly getting a chance to face a glut of lefties because Gibbons doesn't know anything about statistics or sample size (Tepera has been hot garbage against lefties forever).
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted March 30, 2016 Posted March 30, 2016 Honestly I agree. But the board seems trolled. That's because half this board lives in a fantasy land where bullpen roles are decided not on merit but on the possibility of future draft picks and arbitration salaries. Pay them no mind.

Yep, objectively, Cecil is our best reliever and has been for three years. For whatever reason though, he does seem to choke when given a chance to close. Maybe SSS, or maybe he just doesn't thrive in high pressure situations. I dunno.

Didn't he get like 1 chance last April or May and they immediately gave up on him for Osuna?

He had a rough first month last year, didn't he? They pulled him from the closer role pretty early and he still struggled a bit, right? I'm not sure if he chokes as a closer per se, or if his closing opportunities seem to coincide with rough patches. Didn't he get like 1 chance last April or May and they immediately gave up on him for Osuna? I think he blew a Yankees game with some HBPs in the first series. Job went to Castro after that.
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted March 30, 2016 Posted March 30, 2016 Didn't he get like 1 chance last April or May and they immediately gave up on him for Osuna? He blew a couple early last year but he also had shots the previous season IIRC. I kinda prefer it this way, it frees us up to use our best RP whenever we need him.

You also never hear him discussed as a closer candidate and you never read about him saying he wants it. Who knows what goes on behind closed doors? Maybe he just really doesn't feel comfortable in that role.

There should be a contingent of Cecil-as-closer supporters but I honestly have never seen it. I agree Cecil's best role should be the more fluid one he has, but even then you'd expect some corner of the fanbase to be phoning Wilner about it every night. Weird.

The type of Blue Jays fans who call Wilner have no idea how good Cecil really is. Even then, Wilner would probably say something retarded like "You can't have a lefty as your closer. You just can't!"

I was thinking same on a fan push for Cecil as closer. He had it last year and lost it.(his arm was hurting in ST). I think Dinger is right. Most fans just don't realize how incredible he was 2nd half 2015. At least as dominant as BJ Ryan and Ward at their best for us. He ain't no loogy. I too like him where he is now though.
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted March 30, 2016 Posted March 30, 2016 Is Osuna even tangibly better than Storen? All things being equal, the incumbent will always win out. Besides, this is a tempest in a teapot. If Osuna blows a few saves and Storen is tight, it will quickly change... albeit not because of draft pick compensation.
jb22 Verified Member Posted March 30, 2016 Posted March 30, 2016 Storen will close -BTS, NJH Huh go figure the all knowing of bjmb speaking in absolutes can be wrong. Oh well as long as you ignore the ones you miss and advertise the ones you hit you'll come out on top.

He asked for fantasy tips, and people told him that it would probably be Storen because reports had come out saying that it would probably be Storen.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted March 30, 2016 Posted March 30, 2016 I agree Cecil's best role should be the more fluid one he has Except that he doesn't actually have a fluid role. He's basically a 7th inning closer.
Laika Community Moderator Posted March 30, 2016 Posted March 30, 2016 Storen will close -BTS, NJH I sincerely hope you wasted a pick on Storen. That was the goal.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted March 30, 2016 Posted March 30, 2016 Except that he doesn't actually have a fluid role. He's basically a 7th inning closer. Yep. Sanchez pitched every 8th inning regardless of the situation because he was the "8th inning guy". I think it will be the same this year. Gibbons has already aped Ned Yost's lineup construction, might as well try for the pen. At least the latter has a chance to be effective.
