Tulo

Donaldson

Martin

Bautista

Edwin

In 2017/2018 they could be paying five players around $100MM.

Safe to say that if Price sign in Toronto, one of EE/Bautista has no chance of getting extended?

I'm for letting them both walk and getting picks but Edwin battled numerous injuries(back, legs and finger) almost all year. Had to affect him. His contact regression 2015 was more as a result of that than any other factor imo.

I think that's the worst possibility. I'd much prefer we traded them this year if we're going to let them walk after the end of the year.

We'd get a far more significant return than two compensation picks if we traded them away now.

EE had a lot of injuries. A hernia, a finger, and his back, take it easy on him.

And still had a hell of a season. Absolute beast in the 2nd half.

Their 10 and 5 no-trade clauses are a significant impediment to that, unless the Jays are out of the race before the trade deadline and they agree to be moved.

Yes, i was just pointing out he had a lot of s*** happening to him. It has nothing to do with his actual baseball skills diminishing.

I don't think there's any point of debating whether their baseball skill will diminish unless you're going to acknowledge their bodies and health are inevitably going to breakdown to some extent. They go hand in hand.

Me too but lots will depend on where we stand as the season unfolds. Who knows?...I'd love to at least one see team friendly 2+ option(s) extension but I seriously don't think that's going to happen. Makes little sense for the players financially.

If we are in at all around the deadline 2016, they won't be going anywhere and picks will be the worst outcome.

Too bad there is probably more injury filled seasons for both of them down the road, they seem to play hurt a lot. It's just even when they are not 100% they still provide more value than any replacement level player so they are kept on the field.

I have a good friend who tore a muscle in his shoulder and was getting plasma rich injections down in Toronto. The guy giving him the injections says he works on the Jays players and he said that Bats and EE are massive vagines and that Jose's shoulder injury and EE's thumb injury were very minor and that these two are always trying to talk their way out of the lineup.

I will be the first to admit I don't believe any of this (even though it's a good friend who told me)....I resisted posting earlier, because, well, I think it's pointless, but it seems to fit in with this discussion...so what the hell - take it for what it's worth.

I'd definitely buy Edwin being a bit of a whiny bitch.

It's hard to really know anything about his personality. He barely ever speaks.

Thanks. Really doubt this. Been watching these guys play for yrs now and I think you would see more evidence. Was next to Shi Davidi in a long concession line up in Houston at a game back in May and I just started talking to him. He told me then he saw first hand Jose working with trainers on his shoulder and he couldn't lift his arm up above his shoulder, as hard as they tried to improve the motion range. Who really knows though.

So many similar hitters have fallen off big at this age:

Jayson Werth at 36

Adrian Beltre at 36

Victor Martinez at 36

Mattt Holliday's power is on a 3-year decline and he's 35

In terms of recent hitters who remained good investments at close to 40, you're looking at David Ortiz. Letting both walk and collecting the compensation picks and salary flexibility while letting someone else gamble 15-20M/year on a couple of guys in their mid-late 30s is a pretty viable plan.

you name 4 hitters....what about Rodriguez...he had hip surgery, missed an entire year and at the age of 40 posted a 129 OPS. Paul Molitor, Dave Winfield are a couple ex Jays who had good season after the age of 36. Bautista keeps himself in good shape and Edwin has such a good short compact swing, that I could see both aging well. I worry a bit more about Bautista coming back from injuries.

Well my dad works for Nintendo, and he let me try out the new pokemon game that's coming out next year...

If you are slightly injured, your team is 20 games below .500 and 15 games out of a playoff spot with 9 teams to jump i could see Bautista or Edwin wanting to sit for September. Last year though I'd say EE played over half his games with nagging injuries and Bautista probably close with that shoulder injury.

We knew about the finger and the knee but also a sports hernia. He's a tough guy

I'm thinking 1B and DH. Which is why I try and get them to sign 2 years right now (with a slightly higher AAV)...and have them do it together. The PR spin for them is great (best friends, country mates...wanting to stay together on the same team). It doesn't even matter if it's not true. It sells their brand.

Carlos Beltran is a healty dude. He's gonna be good into his 40's

Matt Holiday is a healthy dude. He's gonna be good into his 40's

Jimmy Rollins is a healthy dude. He's gonna be good into his 40's

Ichiro is the healthiest dude ever. He's gonna be good into his 50's.

how many of those guys own a booster juice?

joking, sort of.

Sign Heyward to an 8 year 200m deal and let Jose or Edwin walk or trade.

You'd have a young asset being paid through his prime instead of paying for two aging bats. And in letting Jose or Edwin go or trade you're getting picks or prospects back on top of having Heyward.

People in this forum are disloyal as f***. Did you guys forget the game 5 homerun and the game 6 homeruns.

Why would you let an elite bat walk away

Why? Because he's aging and you don't pay aging players.

Posted

Am aging Bautista is still elite. He is hall of fame talent. Nobody in baseball has better pitch recognition.

He will be elite for quite some time still

Lol @ Bts comparing Bautista to Beltre and Werth.

Posted

If you want to compare Bautista I suggest using Framk Thomas. Who still got on base even in his late 30s. His power declined but he still walked a lot.

Bautista is actually even fitter and takes amazing care of himself. He hasn't declined at all not by sight not by Metrics.

I reckon he still has 3 elite seasons and 2-3 good seasons remaining.

Edwin not so sure
