Laika Community Moderator Posted November 27, 2015 Posted November 27, 2015 http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2015/11/extension-candidate-jose-bautista.html ... To sum up, if Bautista hit the open market this winter, he’d very likely find a four-year deal in the $80MM-$100MM range. This is the price tag the Blue Jays will need to approach in order to extend their star. If they’re open to meeting this price, it might be a smart move to tear up Bautista’s 2016 contract and essentially start the extension next season by giving him a raise to at least $20MM and then three more $20MM+ seasons through 2019 (with possibly a vesting option for 2020). Starting a four-year extension in 2017 would mean the Jays are on the hook for a big salary in 2020 when Bautista would be entering his age-40 season. If I’m the Jays, I’d much rather pay Bautista a $20MM+ salary next year than I would for 2020 since the team is obviously much more confident that Bautista will still be a top run producer in the short term. How much would you offer both of them this offseason? Would you pick one over the other? Try to give them raises in 2016 in exchange for shorter terms?
THANOS Old-Timey Member Posted November 27, 2015 Posted November 27, 2015 The question would be "who projects to age better as a hitter?" since both guys will probably end up a DH for 2-3 years of that contract. Personally, I feel Edwin projects to age more like Big Papi, is younger than JB, and would probably be cheaper, so I'd probably sign him and collect the pick when JB leaves.
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted November 27, 2015 Posted November 27, 2015 Encarnacion is a good mlb player. Jose Bautista is Elite.
BTS Community Moderator Posted November 27, 2015 Posted November 27, 2015 Encarnacion is a good mlb player. Jose Bautista is Elite. Since Edwin's breakout 4 years ago: Bautista = 146 wRC+ Encarnacion = 149 wRC+ Steamer 2016 projection Bautista = 137 wRC+ Encarnacion = 136 wRC+
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted November 27, 2015 Posted November 27, 2015 They will both be here on reasonable contracts I'm not even worried about that.
Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted November 27, 2015 Posted November 27, 2015 http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2015/11/extension-candidate-jose-bautista.html How much would you offer both of them this offseason? Would you pick one over the other? Try to give them raises in 2016 in exchange for shorter terms? It's an unpopular opinion, but I'd be perfectly comfortable extending both of them if the price is right. Giving Jose 3 years on top of an increased 2016 salary is an appealing idea. I'd be more comfortable giving the extra year to Edwin due to his age. Maybe one ends up at DH sooner rather than later, but it's not like Smoak and Colabello are going to block them. Let's not forget that they are both top 10 hitters in the league and have been for the past 3 seasons, which is pretty astounding. I suspect that the extension costs will be pretty reasonable for the level of production that we will get. They're a bit older, but sometimes hitters just don't decline like you would expect. Edwin wRC+ 2012: 150 2013: 146 2014: 151 2015: 150 Jose wRC+ 2012: 137 2013: 135 2014: 160 2015: 147 Pretty consistent. I'd be willing to bet a significant amount that they both end up closer to the David Ortiz/Jim Thome decline curve than the Ryan Howard version.

Trouba95 Old-Timey Member Posted November 27, 2015 Posted November 27, 2015 Edwin only. Thanks Jose for your services but 4/80 for 36-40...no thxs. Already declining in the OF. Draft pick please.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted November 27, 2015 Posted November 27, 2015 If it had to be one I'd probably pick Jose. His contact rates have been very consistent despite his age and his BB/K numbers are elite year after year. Despite his age he has more position flexibility than Edwin.
dineke Old-Timey Member Posted November 27, 2015 Posted November 27, 2015 Sign the one that will be cheaper, so probably Edwin.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted November 27, 2015 Posted November 27, 2015 Try to sign both, but if have to choose, EE Injuries have affected both recently but i see EE as more durable, not having taken the pounding Jose has

I'd love to keep them both as a fan, yet that seems unlikely.

That'd be a lot of money locked up in two aging vets, would it not? Franchise crippling, really.

Suxxxxxxx for a Jays fan, unless magically they cut to stay.

Frenchsoup Verified Member Posted November 27, 2015 Posted November 27, 2015 Bautista 3yrs 65-70 million Edwin 4yrs 80 million
fireballW Verified Member Posted November 27, 2015 Posted November 27, 2015 I don't think EE would cost a crazy amount. DHs have never been paid a lot. Even Ortiz never cracked 20 million. I really think EE would be smart to take a 3/55 deal now that he is mostly at DH. One down year this year and he might get quite a bit less. Bautista is also getting old. He won't be getting real long deal once he hits FA.

Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted November 27, 2015 Posted November 27, 2015 It's been an absolute pleasure watching these 2 guys hit the baseball over the past 4 years. Both were castaways who never gave up and worked their asses off to become two of the best hitters in baseball. I don't know what the answer is re: extension.

RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted November 27, 2015 Posted November 27, 2015 People who are against extensions should consider thinking about the lineup we had in 2009
