Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted November 10, 2015 Posted November 10, 2015 I'd be sad if they trade their first great homegrown player since halladay even if it was for carassco. already happened. d'Arnaud 2.3 WAR in just 67 games
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted November 10, 2015 Posted November 10, 2015 As opposed to every other pitcher, ever I would say Carrasco has more injury risk that the typical pitcher. Already had TJS and missed games last year with a sore shoulder.
dineke Old-Timey Member Posted November 10, 2015 Posted November 10, 2015 already happened. d'Arnaud 2.3 WAR in just 67 games d'Arnaud was drafted by the Phillies. Syndergaard would be the better example but I wasn't counting prospects who were traded away that never played for the Jays.
Atothe Old-Timey Member Posted November 10, 2015 Author Posted November 10, 2015 now I look like the idiot who started this thread. Once again thanks North

Depends on def'n of homegrown.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted November 10, 2015 Posted November 10, 2015 already happened. d'Arnaud 2.3 WAR in just 67 games Reports say he may split time at catcher next year because he's made of glass...
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted November 11, 2015 Posted November 11, 2015 already happened. d'Arnaud 2.3 WAR in just 67 games Um, Syndergaard???
Ehjays Verified Member Posted November 11, 2015 Posted November 11, 2015 Stroman + Pillar + Osuna Thats an overpay! Cleveland would make that trade.
Ehjays Verified Member Posted November 11, 2015 Posted November 11, 2015 This from MLBtraderumours: Seattle has engaged with the Yankees in preliminary talks regarding Brett Gardner, Joel Sherman of the New York Post reports. The 32-year-old faded down the stretch, but nevertheless ended the season with a typically productive overall effort. He’s owed $38MM over three years (including a buyout of a 2019 option), which isn’t exactly cheap but is probably below Gardner’s open-market value. Sherman indicates that New York is in search of controllable starters, and says that the M’s have indicated they are willing to discuss lefty James Paxton in trades. It’s not apparent from the report, though, whether he would play any role in talks on Gardner. Would you do Pillar for Paxton??

dineke Old-Timey Member Posted November 11, 2015 Posted November 11, 2015 Mariners want OBP guys apparently. Also paxton is injury prone and not even that good.

dineke Old-Timey Member Posted November 11, 2015 Posted November 11, 2015 That's why they traded for Trumbo... new gm...

reedjohnsonfan Verified Member Posted November 11, 2015 Posted November 11, 2015 Would you do Pillar for Paxton?? I would probably make that trade. Paxton has all the tools to be a really good starter, whether the Mariners make that trade and if the Jays are comfortable with Pompey is another question.

You don't trade a 4+ war CFer for possibly a #5 starter.

But is he really a 4+ WAR CFer going forward? Paxton has a lot of upside, and regardless he's certainly better than a 5th starter and still makes peanuts. That trade might benefit both teams actually.

Even if he's not, I still think Estrada will be better than Paxton next year. So why give up a valuable CFer? You still have a huge cost savings with Pillar, right? You are just trading for the chance Paxton has upside, but he might not. This club has a tight window now, I rather go with more certainties, and we know that Estrada had a solid year for us and most likely will cost in the 12-15m range and not require trading anyone off the roster.

I agree. I know that 2017 might be tricky with both Bautista and Edwin coming up, but I'd rather that Shapiro and the gang have to work a bit harder next offseason, if the tradeoff is a more realistic chance in 2016. The only guys I would consider trading away from the non-pitching side, in realistic trade scenarios, would be Revere and Smoakabello.

First of all, Estrada may not sign here and second of all after reading this article "Jays hoping to strike it rich in minor league free agent market, it looks like Paxton may be our best bet. http://www.sportsnet.ca/baseball/mlb/blue-jays-hope-to-strike-gold-on-minor-league-free-agent-market/ "First and foremost you want to find guys who can help your major-league club," said LaCava. "That is far and away the number one reason you (sign minor-league free agents). Looks like it could be a long off season. Hope not.
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted November 11, 2015 Posted November 11, 2015 Paxton is not particularly good, giving up assets for him might not be smart.
Dr Negative Verified Member Posted November 11, 2015 Posted November 11, 2015 I'm not opposed to the idea of rescuing promising players from the awful Seattle development system but I'd want more than Paxton back for Pillar.

reedjohnsonfan Verified Member Posted November 11, 2015 Posted November 11, 2015 I probably wouldn't even do Walker for Pillar. Seriously? Seattle wouldn't even consider that.
reedjohnsonfan Verified Member Posted November 11, 2015 Posted November 11, 2015 Paxton is not particularly good, giving up assets for him might not be smart. I think he's decent and seemed to make improvements with his delivery in 2014. Of course the sample hasn't been there but I think he's a decent mid rotation starter at worst with some chance of becoming more. I actually think Pillar for Paxton is a pretty fair trade, but also because I think Pillar just had what will likely be his best season.
Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted November 11, 2015 Posted November 11, 2015 I would probably make that trade. Paxton has all the tools to be a really good starter, whether the Mariners make that trade and if the Jays are comfortable with Pompey is another question. Ewwwwww Paxton
Frenchsoup Verified Member Posted November 11, 2015 Posted November 11, 2015 Paxton has starting traits, he's just so injury prone. Wouldn't give up anything good for him.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted November 11, 2015 Posted November 11, 2015 Seriously? Seattle wouldn't even consider that. It'd be pretty close. I just prefer the position player to pitcher in terms of long term control. If they each had say 2 or 3 years of control then I would do it.

I don't think it's close at all but to each their own.
