You've captured my vote for worst troll.

Did Salty really get 500K? Good lord that would have been a no-brainer.

Isn't he a terrible framer? He's probably close to replacement level, which is why I'm guessing that he got so little.

Most backup catchers are near replacement level? That's a shocker. Some fool tried to convince me otherwise just yesterday.

And "Top 10" JPA isn't even a backup catcher lol

Meh, if the Birds have Thole, I'm not heart broken, wanted Kratz as you know.

f*** this front office is aids. Giving broken down Saunders 2.9M. Useless Delabar 850k. But taking Donaldson to arbitration over 450k. Get the f*** out.

Honestly it's embarrassing.

Saunders is worth more than a replacement player and he could be a welcome addition to our outfield. The front office knows a lot more about his situation. Hell it was this organization's negligence that costed him his season, they owe him something.

That's interesting, I wonder why. I was under the impression that they only had 2 choices.

Me too

Baseball Prospectus:

How does salary arbitration work?

The process is what is known as "Final Offer Arbitration" (though in the world of alternative dispute resolution it is now becoming known simply as "Baseball Arbitration"). In mid-January, each side to the dispute submits a salary figure to a panel of independent arbitrators. After a few hours of hearings, held in early February, the arbitrators pick one figure or the other. The arbitrator cannot "split the baby" and settle on a salary in the middle of the spread between the club's figure and the player's. One side leaves the arbitration a winner and the other a loser, heightening risk and encouraging negotiation and settlement.

This is the critical element of baseball arbitration: it is designed to produce a settlement, not a verdict.

How does the process of salary arbitration work?

During salary arbitration the player and the team each exchange numbers for the contract for the following season.

The club’s offer must be at least the same amount that the same amount as the player earned the previous season. The player’s offer can be as high as they like but the two parties must come to an agreement on a number.

If the team and the player cannot find common ground by the January deadline then an arbitration hearing is scheduled.

Arbitration hearings are scheduled between February 1st and February 21st.

Actually, these hearings rarely come to fruition because the players and clubs are still allowed to negotiate between the deadline and the scheduled hearing. Usually they come to a middle number. If, for example, a player wants $10 million and a club offers $8 million the two will agree on $9 million in order to avoid a hearing.

What happens if an arbitration hearing does take place?

If an arbitration hearing is held each party is allowed one hour to present their case to a panel of three judges. A player’s accomplishments or lack thereof are brought into play as can be the team’s record and attendance. The gamble with going to a hearing is that there will only be one winner. The court has 24 hours to make a decision and will either side with the player or the team. The judges are not required to explain their decision.

I don't think they owe him anything. Its not Shapiro's fault Dunedin sucks. I would be fine with bringing him back on a minor league contract. I just really doubt his ability to stay on the field and his injury really diminished his tools. I just hate wasting money. Even if its not my money.

Hopefully he shuts me up. Just don't agree with him getting a guaranteed salary. Or taking Donaldson to arbitration.

This offseason has been about as big a disaster PR wise as you can get. Its a shame because the team is still really good yet by public reaction you would think last year never happened.

Just think if we still had Reyes

lol yeah seriously...

I hope the Jays and JD are able to come to terms on a long term contract. It would give Shapiro and the rest of the org. some goodwill heading into the season. Even a Stroman extension would be great.

I don't really follow casual venues for Jays news. Are people seriously down on the Jays? I know Price leaving is raw for some people, but what the hell else is so bad? The GM leaving, who scored two lucky months on the last year of his contract?

I haven't been this up on them since... well, ever.

He was getting the same money last year... Avoid arbitration, hit the reset button try again.

I'm still iffy on the Chavez trade. We could have kept Hendriks and sign a guy like Carlos Villanueva (for dirt cheap mind you). We all know how much reliable bullpen help cost now and Hendriks would have eased the blow of Cecil leaving next season.

Yep, I don't get the chavez trade as well.

Yeah, there's a lot of stupidity out there. I've seen more than a few "The Jays will be lucky to win 75 games!!!" out there. Mind you, this seems to be from the casual fans around the net.

That being said, never read the comments.

Seems pretty bad. Rogers not spending is definitely part of it and the latest is the Blue Jays not being able to come to terms with JD over 500k. Most casual Jays fans don't understand how the arb. process works so thats a big reason for it but even guys like Shi Davidi are voicing concerns about taking him to arbitration 2 straight years which will only make the public perception worse.

Shapiro: He's Crap

Arbitrator: He won the MVP for god sakes

Shapiro: I stand by my comment

I agree overall. That said, I think the Chavez trade was another example of the Jays placing value on intangibles. Everyone seems to say that Chavez is both a great teammate and a second pitching coach for our young pitchers, so maybe that put the trade over in their eyes?

Now that we traded Revere I kind of wished we signed Gentry or Nava. Both signed dirt cheap and can provide some of what Revere took with him. Don't think Junior Lake will cut it and don't get me started on Carerra.
