Bygones are quickly put aside. And it would likely be best for O'Days career to be on the same team as Bautista lol

I'm on board with signing him and trading Osuna for a SP.

Smokingjays1111 Verified Member Posted November 18, 2015 Posted November 18, 2015 You find guys of the Hendricks ilk to fill out the pen and if Shapiro wastes money like that on a side armer I'll be pissed
Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted November 18, 2015 Posted November 18, 2015 You find guys of the Hendricks ilk to fill out the pen and if Shapiro wastes money like that on a side armer I'll be pissed Why does it matter that he's a sidearmer? He's been an absolute elite reliever for 4 consecutive years while throwing 87. He just had his best season ever. His swinging strike rate has gone up every season for 5 straight years. The guy puts up obscene numbers and after so long, it can't be a fluke. To top it off, it appears that O'Day might be a bit of a FIP beater, and that's with an already very good FIP. Average ERA under 2 in the past 4 years. RA-9 WAR of 2.2, 2.0, 2.7, 2.7 in his time with Baltimore. Cherry on the sundae: this would really piss off Orioles fans, but he seems like a really nice buy for what he's asking for.

I'm pretty sure educated oriole fans would laugh at a contract like that , I am by no means saying he is not a great if not elite reliever , I'm saying you do NOT pay guys like him 8 mil a year it's absurdity that it's even being thrown around
Smokingjays1111 Verified Member Posted November 18, 2015 Posted November 18, 2015 The amount of failed starters out there to be had for cheap and your justifying oday (head shake)

It's what we're already giving an inferior player like Ben Revere.

Breaking down cost per win, he's a very nice bargain over a reasonably short term.
Smokingjays1111 Verified Member Posted November 18, 2015 Posted November 18, 2015 How much do you think Cahill will cost ?
Laika Community Moderator Posted November 18, 2015 Posted November 18, 2015 The amount of failed starters out there to be had for cheap and your justifying oday (head shake) You're correct that it's relatively easy to find good relievers. It's hard to find truly elite relievers though. And O'Day is absolutely elite. Since 2009, his RA9-WAR is 2nd in baseball behind only Kimbrel. Since 2012, he's #3 behind Kimbrel and Chapman. The guy is a beast!

I think the way he throws his fastball (with the point of release being a big factor) certainly contributes to that. He throws as close to a "rise ball" as you can get; clearly he's doing something special when he can get so many high fastball swinging strikes whilst sitting 87.
Smokingjays1111 Verified Member Posted November 18, 2015 Posted November 18, 2015 Casey Janssen , like cmon guys 9 mil for oday ffs
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted November 18, 2015 Posted November 18, 2015 *have I wouldn't bother, he does that a lot.
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted November 18, 2015 Posted November 18, 2015 Casey Janssen , like cmon guys 9 mil for oday ffs He's not Casey Janssen though. Janssen sucked ass at the end of his Blue Jays tenure. O'Day is much better.
Smokingjays1111 Verified Member Posted November 18, 2015 Posted November 18, 2015 I really don't have the time to type out a list of guys to be had on the cheap who the jays will target !
Laika Community Moderator Posted November 18, 2015 Posted November 18, 2015 I really don't have the time to type out a list of guys to be had on the cheap who the jays will target ! Good, because none of them would be even close to as good as O'Day and nobody would read your list.
Smokingjays1111 Verified Member Posted November 18, 2015 Posted November 18, 2015 Janssen wil be a heck of a lot cheaper than that overpay
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted November 18, 2015 Posted November 18, 2015 Janssen wil be a heck of a lot cheaper than that overpay Janssen is terrible, and O'Day would not be an overpay.
Smokingjays1111 Verified Member Posted November 18, 2015 Posted November 18, 2015 Bobby Parnell , mujica, wright, parra , there is honestly to many to list
Smokingjays1111 Verified Member Posted November 18, 2015 Posted November 18, 2015 im done talking oday could put up good value for the jays it doesn't mean it's a wise decision
BTS Community Moderator Posted November 18, 2015 Author Posted November 18, 2015 O'Day is like a 3-4 win upgrade for 7-8M per year. Want.

Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted November 18, 2015 Posted November 18, 2015 Good, because none of them would be even close to as good as O'Day and nobody would read your list. There are literally no free agent relievers as good as O'Day, and judging by the cost of Kimbrel, the trade market for Chapman, Robertson or Miller might very well cost more than $30M worth of prospects.
BTS Community Moderator Posted November 18, 2015 Author Posted November 18, 2015 3-4 win upgrade? Yeah. The team doesn't even have 5 relievers better than replacement, and he's almost a 3-win player according to RA-9 WAR, which would understate his actual value.
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted November 18, 2015 Posted November 18, 2015 3-4 win upgrade? I'm guessing this involves some positive projections of Osuna in the rotation. I see it as more of a 2 win uprade, but I'd still gladly take 2 wins @ $7-8M.

Yeah for sure, but the really fascinating thing for me is that he keeps improving. You'd think that, because a large part of why he's good is simply his delivery, he'd be getting figured out more and more. But he gets older and just misses more bats than he did the previous year while throwing more pitches in the zone. It is really quite amazing.
DerangedIdoit Verified Member Posted November 18, 2015 Posted November 18, 2015 Good, because none of them would be even close to as good as O'Day and nobody would read your list. It's true. What a team is paying for when it comes to O'Day is certainty and peace of mind. A lot of effective relievers have off years. Its to fickle and volatile. Very few relievers ever become 'elite' and that's what a contending team needs, not a hail-mary shot with an unproven. Having said all that 9 million per year is too much even for that.
