BTS Community Moderator Posted October 24, 2015 Author Posted October 24, 2015 1. What makes you say that? 2. How does he "prove" more without the opportunity? I'm just generally against clearing out proven talent to open a starting role for someone who hasn't proven that they can be effective. It's a great way to leave yourself no depth. If Pompey isn't being counted on as an everyday OF from April, he'll be great depth for when an OF is needed. If you trade Revere and DFA Saunders to open a spot for Pompey, what happens when someone gets hurt? There will be 500+ PA for Pompey even he's not initially one of the everyday 3. If he kicks the door down in those PA, then you pencil him in as a starter in 2017.

nextyear Verified Member Posted October 24, 2015 Posted October 24, 2015 Surprised at how many people want to trade Revere. The team finally has a lot of OF depth, why get rid of it? Bautista looked awful in RF and Pompey is probably best as a 4th OF until he proves he can handle more. Revere is a league-average LF, and at ~6.5M he's not expensive. I don't understand it. I love having Ben Revere on the team and want him back in 2016. Ben is already planning to work his tail off in the off-season to finish the job in 2016. Ben Revere is the type of character guy that the Blue Jays need.
GeorgiaPeach Verified Member Posted October 24, 2015 Posted October 24, 2015 Except everyone and his dog knew the Dickey trade was terribad the moment it was announced. Have never seen such a lopsided trade in 40 years of following baseball. Bagwell for Larry Andersen Smoltz for Doyle Alexander
GeorgiaPeach Verified Member Posted October 24, 2015 Posted October 24, 2015 How about history? Before this, each of the past 3 seasons and 4 out of the past 5 he has had better defensive years than Goins. We are splitting hairs on backup MIF. If the Jays can sign one of Penny/Barney, I expect Goins to be traded. If they don't, I don't expect Goins to be traded. I am not advocating it, just setting my expectations accordingly between players who shouldn't be the main position players on a roster and selling high on a guy. '' It would likely be a package involving Goins if he's moved. He's netting very little to nothing on his own.

Agreed I am not sold on Pompey's bat at all and neither are the projections. He's a very useful bench player as he can pinch run and defensive sub. Plus, like you said in another thread he's still going to get plenty of AB's. Keeping Revere is the best option.
BTS Community Moderator Posted October 25, 2015 Author Posted October 25, 2015 Projections aren't? Steamer wRC+: Saunders 99 Pillar 97 Pompey 95 Revere 87 I don't think they need to keep Revere. He is not a "league-average LF" and his dollars may be better spent on a mid-rotation starter. I don't understand how you can say Revere isn't a league average LF when he's been that the last two years and 4 of the last 5.

BTS Community Moderator Posted October 25, 2015 Author Posted October 25, 2015 How can that be true when he's only played left field for one season? He was actually a decent defensive centrefielder earlier in his career, which carried his value. Even with that, he's still tracking below 2 WAR per full season for his career. As a below-average hitter and below-average fielder in left, he's not a very good regular. I think it's a pretty safe assumption that his 2+ win CF seasons would have been 2+ win LF seasons. And it's impossible to talk to you when you're being disingenuous. Career 1.99 fWAR/600 = "tracking below 2 WAR per full season for his career". Come on.

RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted October 25, 2015 Posted October 25, 2015 Lineup is too 1-dimensional. When they score they score them in bunches, but when they are shut down, they dont have any way of getting men on base and generating a run. You need a fully balanced lineup

You need a fully balanced lineup no way of getting men on base...they lead the fricking league in walks. I think you're confusing this team with the Astros. The Jays had the best offense in the league by a mile

BTS Community Moderator Posted October 25, 2015 Author Posted October 25, 2015 By wRC+ the Jays had a top-5 offense of the last 15 years. There were no fundamental issues with their offense lol.
saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted October 25, 2015 Posted October 25, 2015 The best thing about this off season is the short wait until for free agency, and the gm meetings to happen. The free agent pool is a good one and it should be fun.

Scion Verified Member Posted October 25, 2015 Posted October 25, 2015 What does Ben Zobrist project to earn? I am intrigued by the idea of adding him because of his positional versatility, on base skills, and age which will likely limit the term of his deal.

I don't think its very piratical with Gibby and that can be a development issue with the Jays. I can honestly see him putting Bello in the OF instead of Pompey.. Unpaid internship. Thanked because I laughed, cried and agreed. I don't understand it. I love having Ben Revere on the team and want him back in 2016. I hope you know that what a player's exception on where he wants to play and where he will play are two different things. Revere could buy himself half of Toronto and the Jays shouldn't GAF. By wRC+ the Jays had a top-5 offense of the last 15 years. There were no fundamental issues with their offense lol. wRC+? The hell.. What is this team in the pat 15 years in terms of batting average? THAT'S WHAT I THOUGHT!
jays_fever Old-Timey Member Posted October 25, 2015 Posted October 25, 2015 Team walked, hit bombs, didnt strike out that much, blew the competition away in scoring runs and had a team single them to death in the semi finals so obviously the offense is flawed

Ya he's going to be an interesting guy to watch this offseason in terms of his contract. Heading into his age 35 season and for the last five years prior to this he was a lock for 5+ WAR. I think Zobrist can land a deal around 4/80 with that fourth year being the deciding factor. Lots of teams would be on him at three years, but the fourth probably gets it done.

I am intrigued by the idea of adding him because of his positional versatility, on base skills, and age which will likely limit the term of his deal. There will probably be 20+ teams interested in Zobrist. I think he'll sign a very lucrative contract for someone entering their age 35 season. 4 year deal should be easy to obtain. His camp will probably be looking at the V-Mart extension, which was 4/$68 for Martinez' age 36-39 seasons. Also recently, we saw Nelson Cruz get 4/$57 entering his age 34 season. Ben Zobrist is a completely different player than those two. Arguably, he would be expected to age better and have a better chance of maintaining his value as he gets ancient. Could get five years!
