Mozzer Verified Member Posted October 13, 2015 Posted October 13, 2015 No doubt he looks out of sorts in the playoffs, but this team would not be in the playoffs were it not for Price. He was outstanding from the moment we got him. I think Gibbons panicked a bit today but in the same instance Texas is heavy on left handed hitters and He wanted to lock it down on the road.
OBPlover Verified Member Posted October 13, 2015 Posted October 13, 2015 I just think it's nothing more then Price is tired. He has a lot of miles on that arm this year. Also, this is why you don't want Price in any kind of long term deal. He might be pretty sketchy when he hits 32-33. Problem is, there's basically nobody else for the Jays to go out and sign if we want a "Number 1" pitcher all season long next year. Cueto? Horrendous 2nd half.

Cueto? Horrendous 2nd half. Perhaps AA can pull some shurikens out and nab someone unexpected. There's also a number of middle rotation guys that could put together a pretty solid rotation with Stroman at the top. Think Wei-Yin Chen, etc.
Harvey_Specter Verified Member Posted October 13, 2015 Posted October 13, 2015 I bet we'll see Sanchez and Osuna in the starting rotation to start the year. Hutch to the bullpen. Cecil closing. They'll probably pickup Dickey's option. These are the easiest moves. Stroman Dickey Sanchez Osuna ?

You need a bigger sample size no matter how good he's looked. How many guys do the Jays have left to trade? I think Jays will let Dickey go and rotation will be: Unknown Ace Free agent Price or Cueto Stroman Sanchez Estrada (signed) N#5 Hutch or some Free agent Nobody or prospect.
Nafro Verified Member Posted October 13, 2015 Posted October 13, 2015 Pretty interested out of four starters Price has been our worst. If we win Wednesday it will be interesting to see how the rotation pans out. Will they still go with four starters? Hmmmm...yes of course

Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted October 13, 2015 Posted October 13, 2015 Rotation probably looks more like this next year: Stroman Samardzja Dickey Anderson/Chen Hutch
Nafro Verified Member Posted October 13, 2015 Posted October 13, 2015 He's not a playoff performer. Just simply a statement you can't make. Considering your account name though, if you had got your wish earlier this year....we likely would not be in the playoffs. Yeah we need a playoff performer like Michael Wacha...how'd his start go yesterday? 1-6 playoff record with a 4.99 ERA. David Price you say? Nope Clayton Kershaw's playoff stats. It turns out the teams you play in the playoffs are really really gud. It also turns out many times, these ace's pitch on short rest, at weird start times...after 200-220 innings and pitching since February.
Nafro Verified Member Posted October 13, 2015 Posted October 13, 2015 Rotation probably looks more like this next year: Stroman Samardzja Dickey Anderson/Chen Hutch I like this rotation with perhaps Mike Leake instead of Anderson/Chen. Though a lefty like either of those two would be nice. Also perhaps a Connor Greene sighting in their at some point.

rydermike Verified Member Posted October 13, 2015 Posted October 13, 2015 I came into the game thinking the strategy would've been Dickey for half the game 5 IP and then Price for the rest 4 IP, so Price would be on regular rest for game 1 and Stro- for Game 5. When Gibby took Dckey out exactly after twice through the order. I figured that was exactly the plan.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted October 13, 2015 Posted October 13, 2015 Okay then, just for feces and jocularity, let's compare his career stats to his playoff numbers: Regular season: 1441 IP, 3.37 SIERA, 82 xFIP-, 3.35 xFIP Playoffs: 47 IP, 3.21 SIERA, 94 xFIP- 3.79 xFIP Even if you want to put stock into the narrative that he's not a playoff performer because he buckles under the pressure like Ray Finkle, Price is still expected to be above average over a larger sample. Yeah but hitters try harder in the playoffs
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted October 13, 2015 Posted October 13, 2015 Lol at all you thinking Samardjza is going to sign here. Yep I bet that's what his agent is thinking. Hey lets ignore all those offers we have from pitch friendly stadiums out west and go pitch in up.North in the AL east to rebuild value lmao
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted October 13, 2015 Posted October 13, 2015 Sometimes I feel like no one here has actually been through a Jays off season
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted October 13, 2015 Posted October 13, 2015 In all this, let's not forget what Price did for us in August and September Price instead of Hutchison (or wheover Gibby might have used instead if Hutch had continued to suck) over that dozen or so starts made an enormous difference when we were trying to catch and overtake the Yankees
Flashman Verified Member Posted October 13, 2015 Posted October 13, 2015 I don't agree with anybody writing off Price as a potential force in the playoffs or any firm assertion that he's a choker. But I do find it curious that many sabermetrics fans, who rightly consider themselves more enlightened than the RBI crowd, are so dismissive of the intangibles. If stats were the be all and end all, then there would be no use in the sports psychology profession. The playoffs are the highest level of the highest level of the sport of baseball. Frankly, it'd be weird if there weren't some players who didn't were chokers on such a stage. It's the diversity of human beings. It's worth reading The Maverick Mindset to see how psychologist John Eliot helped out Phil Humber on the pitching mound at Rice University. It's the same principle of the pre-game superstitions; there are no supernatural forces at work, but adhering to a superstition might just give the player that peace of mind they need to perform better on the field. A clear mind. It's thuggish to dismiss the potential importance of a player, say, wearing their favoured number.

Cueto? Horrendous 2nd half.. zimmerman isn't terrible....iwakuma isn't too bad...kasmir is okay....not sure how much cueto cost himself in dollar terms...that Greinke guy isn't the worst pitcher in baseball...brett anderson, fister, lackey, samardzija, latos, leake, estrada. there's actually quite a few options....you don't have to get the number 1. We have stroman. A couple of number 2 or 3 guys wouldn't pair nice with Stroman. There's some buy low candidates, there's some older guys you won't have to commit as long too....
Governator Community Moderator Posted October 13, 2015 Posted October 13, 2015 Whatever happens I predict Bautista will be quite vocal when the Jays don't sign Price.
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted October 13, 2015 Posted October 13, 2015 Whatever happens I predict Bautista will be quite vocal when the Jays don't sign Price. He will also be very vocal when he himself isn't resigned to an extension
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted October 13, 2015 Posted October 13, 2015 Yeah, Price is probably hurt. That would explain why he was only hitting 97 MPH yesterday.
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted October 13, 2015 Posted October 13, 2015 Whatever happens I predict Bautista will be quite vocal when the Jays don't sign Price. Bautista signed a team-friendly contract which helped allow AA to surround him with talent, and he's carried our offense for years. He has every right to complain if this team doesn't procure an ace for next season, our last year with JB and EE under contract.
Nafro Verified Member Posted October 13, 2015 Posted October 13, 2015 Hmmm. Stroman Jordan Zimmerman RA Dickey Brett Anderson Marco Estrada Maybe Hutchison if they don't re-sign Estrada.
dineke Old-Timey Member Posted October 13, 2015 Posted October 13, 2015 Stroman FA RA Dickey Hutch Osuna/Filler.

What would be annoying (but not unlikely) is that Jose will complain about not signing Price even if another good pitcher is brought in. We saw with the Tulo trade that Bautista will be lukewarm to a positivie acquisition if it's not the acquisition he wanted. Bringing in a good pitcher is way more important than focusing on Price specifically but that's not necessarily how he (and a lot of casuals for that matter) will see it.
500LevelSTH Verified Member Posted October 13, 2015 Posted October 13, 2015 I think the reality is David Price is a March thru September arm. Might look at starting less early in the season, because he bottoms out in post season. I also go back to the AL East celebration interview with Barry Davis, where Price touched his left shoulder/arm when speaking about not starting the next. Not necessarily an injury, but he looks like his arm may be fatigued....hence the 12 day rest between starts. Pitching relief may end up being his gig for rest of this postseason, get ready for possibility becoming a reality.

I find myself immersed in them in some capacity almost every night. But to pretend these guys are robots is insane- there is certainly a human element to this game and to suggest there isn't is complete ignorance.

After they win the World Series, Jose is gonna be chill. Multiple years of not making the post season for a player of Jose's calibre has to be frustrating, but once he tastes the champagne, the Jays will have fulfilled all their promises to him, and he'll have nothing to complain about regardless of what happens next year.
