ICECOLDBEER Verified Member Posted October 9, 2015 Posted October 9, 2015 Can anyone find the stats for the Jays with roof open vs closed? Quick google search didn't show anything. But old Donald Cherry seemed to have found them somewhere. What's your opinion on it? I think it's total ******** that they were forced to close it. Jays hit 3 to the warning track that looked like homers off the bat but they stayed in the park.
canadiansportsjunkie Verified Member Posted October 9, 2015 Posted October 9, 2015 I think it's complete BS that MLB decides to have the dome open or closed.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted October 9, 2015 Posted October 9, 2015 I don't know why people think this is a big deal. Texas had to play under the same conditions as the Jays, and they aren't even used to it like the Jays are. Open, closed, whatever. Just go out there and win.

Yeah, I have no idea why they get to decide that, I'd reckon it would be part of the "Home advantage". Not that I believe closing or opening the roof necessarily matters in impacting our gameplay in too meaningful of a way, maybe aside from the Dickey thing (who ironically enough won't be pitching at home this series)...

It changes the game open dome tonight IMO I believe some of those long fly outs turn this game into the Jays favor. Fenway with the wall they think about that when building their team 100%. I am not sour with the loss I just don't like the rule in general.
scagneti Verified Member Posted October 9, 2015 Posted October 9, 2015 I really did think that when it came to MLB, their only involvement was "would the rain/snow cause this game to be cancelled?" Apparently not. Game should have had roof open. It was stupid hot in there today, but it's not like it cost the Jays the game. I hope that MLB didn't pussy out and worry that the Rangers would be too cold with an open roof, cause what would they have done in any other ALE city with no dome??
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted October 9, 2015 Posted October 9, 2015 There was 50% chance of rain from 6pm and onwards, and the roof has difficulty opening/closing in colder weather. Don't wanna get stuck in the rain with the roof open.

Don't wanna get stuck in the rain with the roof open. I always felt like it was more that Rogers didn't want to pay the apparently $200 it cost them to close the roof. Not sure if the amount was true, but for the last 10 years of STH/Toronto Star passholder, I loved to pull that stat out of nowhere.

Could be the sunniest of days but that is just the facts 15C?? That's our best case March through May. So, that's really a thing that the roof can't open if it's under 12C? If only they knew 25 years ago to plan for a cold CDN fall-slash-spring...
FrozenRopes Verified Member Posted October 9, 2015 Posted October 9, 2015 Other teams play there, it would only matter if they opened it for when the Jays were hitting and closed it when they weren't. Otherwise, this should be a non-issue

Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted October 9, 2015 Posted October 9, 2015 Well, we just saw the roof thing cost us a game with the Encarnacion flyball. That's obviously gone in the regular season.
art_vandelay275 Verified Member Posted October 9, 2015 Posted October 9, 2015 I don't know why people think this is a big deal. Texas had to play under the same conditions as the Jays, and they aren't even used to it like the Jays are. Open, closed, whatever. Just go out there and win. Rangers lineup though they rank in the top in terms of offense are constructed differently than the Jays. They have more team speed and in general plays relatively more "small ball" rather than the relying on the HRs. The Jays have a couple of base stealing threats in their lineup but overall don't have much team speed. They are the big bashers - they rely on the HRs as we all know. Given this, any stadium conditions do favor a team one way or another. This is why in stadiums that have natural grass for instance, groundskeeper will maintain the lawn, including how they mow it, to different conditions depending on who's pitching (ground baller for instance). It's like this with stadium where ball carries or not carries, or the park dimensions. Ironically, the Jays big bats may fare a better chance with the HRs at Globe Life then at RC with the roof closed

Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted October 9, 2015 Posted October 9, 2015 this is interesting ... but when the ball left Eddy's bat, did you think it was leaving the park? No. But you can't always tell...if he gets it just a bit off the end of the bat it can still look great off the bat.

By Eddy's reaction and this is a guy who doesn't pimp his shots, it sure looked as if he thought he barreled it

beet Verified Member Posted October 10, 2015 Posted October 10, 2015 Have we ever had the roof open for a playoff game? Obviously exhibition stadium had no roof, but the two series wins in the dome never saw it open for either run if i remember correctly.

burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted October 13, 2015 Posted October 13, 2015 Wonder if the ball travels less far with a sold out crowd? 50K ppl cause the dome to be much more warn and with all the humidity maybe the ball travels less.
Yorkshire Blue Jay Verified Member Posted October 13, 2015 Posted October 13, 2015 The temperature forecast for Wednesday would mean the roof would be closed even if the Jays (not the MLB) controlled the decision.

I could be talking out my ass, but I've always heard announcers say the warm humid air helps the ball travel further? Just looked it up, hot humid air helps the ball travel further in less dense air.
