Clutchlings Verified Member Posted June 8, 2017 Posted June 8, 2017 From today's FanGraphs Prospects Chat:

12:10 Troutmageddon: Is Bo Bichette a top 50 prospect at this point?

12:12 Eric A Longenhagen: This question is essentially, “Is Bo Bichette either a low-risk above average regular or high-risk potential star?” and I think there’s an argument that he’s the latter. Not sure where he falls on the continuum of other guys who fit those descriptors or if it’s within your arbitrary endpoint, but I was certainly too low on him.

12:39 Alex: What do you make of Jon Harris? Baseball-Reference has him almost 17 months below median pitcher age at Double-A, but the stat line is ugly. He has what appears to be an inflated HR/FB, but the other peripherals aren’t spectacular.I know the old mantra is “don’t scout the stat line”, but right now that is all I have. I was hoping you could complement that with your scouting insight.

12:40 Eric A Longenhagen: Not totally out on him as a prospect, but I’ve heard he doesn’t look good.

I think a lot of teams were scared off by Bichette's stance, and by the fact that his brother levelled off in High A. The Blue Jays were one of the few teams that said they wouldn't mess with his mechanics, so he signed with them. He's toned things down a bit, but he has a fantastic approach. He chases few pitches outside of the zone, and hammers mistakes. He's a smart baserunner, and generally displays a high baseball IQ. Like Vladdy, though, it's hard to see him long-term at SS. He has good range and reactions to ground balls, but his arm is average, and he has trouble making that throw from the hole. His bat will absolutely play, though. Great job of scouting and drafting by the Blue Jays.

Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted June 8, 2017 Posted June 8, 2017 Vlad and Bo in Dunedin within a few weeks. I want to see them have a short stint with the Fisher Cats before the year is out.

I wonder if they wait to promote them until after they play in their all star game. Some teams do like to give their kids that exposure. Safe bet though they'll be showing up in the Futures game
KevinGregg Verified Member Posted June 8, 2017 Posted June 8, 2017 There really has never been a comparable season by anyone in A ball, this year or any other year.

Clutchlings Verified Member Posted June 9, 2017 Posted June 9, 2017 Are there any names in the DSL to at least look more closely at when checking out the boxscores? Since you asked.....Jays were limited by bonus restrictions last July 2nd, but Andrew Tinnish gave me some names to follow: https://clutchlings.blogspot.ca/2017/06/dsl-blue-jays-season-underway.html

The org has proven that if a team is in a playoff hunt in mid to late August, they will move prospects to bolster roster, but I won't be surprised to see both spend the whole season in the MWL. They need to be in Dunedin for the challenge.

I'd be very disappointed if they decided to keep both of them in Lansing all year.

How long ago did he say that? They probably never expected them to be this good this fast. They are forcing the promotion at this point.

Clutchlings Verified Member Posted June 9, 2017 Posted June 9, 2017 How long ago did he say that? They probably never expected them to be this good this fast. They are forcing the promotion at this point. Gil told me that in an interview in March. And I think that given how well they both played last year, this year is not a huge surprise. Both still have plenty of work to do with their defence.

Any idea where I can expect my boy Mc Gregory Contreras to be assigned?

I hope that's just posturing. Wasting a half-season of development time is huge when you're this young.
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted June 9, 2017 Posted June 9, 2017 It may sound dumb, but the Jays are probably just going to let Bichette and Vlad do the MWL all-star game before they're promoted. It's a nice reward for the guys and some recognition. I agree that they've earned promotions to Dunedin, but there's still half a season left for that. It's not like they're going to get to AA this year anyway. The All-Star game is June 20, I would expect they'll be promoted within a few days after that. http://www.baseballamerica.com/minors/2017-midwest-league-star-game-rosters/

Slade Old-Timey Member Posted June 11, 2017 Posted June 11, 2017 What's up with Gurriel, is he still injured? Didn't they say the injury was not serious and now he's missed almost half the season.
Guest Guests Posted June 11, 2017 Posted June 11, 2017 What's up with Gurriel, is he still injured? Didn't they say the injury was not serious and now he's missed almost half the season. You can't help but wonder why, in an information age, this isn't more readily available. I mean, Pompey makes a shoestring catch, ends up being pulled from the game, and days later you're still wondering about the seriousness of his injury and how long he'll be out. Geez, if only Trump knew the story, he could tweet non-stop about it.
