Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted July 18, 2023 Posted July 18, 2023 Interesting time to promote Martinez. In his last 7 AB’s hes struck out 6 times lol.
Spanky__99 Old-Timey Member Posted July 18, 2023 Posted July 18, 2023 Interesting time to promote Martinez. In his last 7 AB’s hes struck out 6 times lol. The scoop was he was going to get promoted from prior to the weekend, Jonn. Be better.
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted July 18, 2023 Posted July 18, 2023 The scoop was he was going to get promoted from prior to the weekend, Jonn. Be better. Why didn’t they just promote him before he played that last game. Now it looks weird lol.
Spanky__99 Old-Timey Member Posted July 18, 2023 Posted July 18, 2023 Hahaha... seriously though, the rumour is Orelvis is moving up to Buffalo and I believe De Jesus will move up to New Hampshire coinciding with that move if that's the case. If he can transition to double A withstanding some minimal growing pains, he could be in the 75-125 range. Why didn’t they just promote him before he played that last game. Now it looks weird lol. Not sure, but I post about it a few days back, it was calculated, I wonder if De Jesus moves up to AA.

Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted July 18, 2023 Posted July 18, 2023 Orelvis hit a HR in his 2nd at bat with Buffalo Meanwhile Davis Schneider continues to make a mockery of AAA. .407 on base with a .943 OPS. Why he hasn't been called up yet is beyond me.

Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted July 19, 2023 Posted July 19, 2023 Pretty much all of Buffalo went off tonight. Ernie Clement and Horwitz both had 5-hit games. Barger had 2 hits. Orelvis with a homer in his first AAA game.

Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted July 19, 2023 Posted July 19, 2023 Ernie Clement is having a crazy year at Buffalo. He's slashing .344/.421/.535 and has only 6 Ks in 181 plate appearances. His underlying numbers don't look bad either. BABIP is only .309 entering tonight and his ISO is near .190. The only problem with him is that this is his last year with an option so next year he either needs to be on the team or he's gone. But he could possibly be a bench guy.

Why he hasn't been called up yet is beyond me. It's because you guys are all over Craig Biggio Jr.'s nuts still so there's no point in calling him up only to watch him sit in favor of the golden boy. Once we finally kick that nepo baby to the curb then we'll have room to actually try some of these prospects out.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted July 19, 2023 Posted July 19, 2023 Look at Addison Barger's exit velos from tonight's game. In all 6 ABs he put a ball into play at 100 mph or greater. He's back.

I want him LF instead of Varsho. Need someone who can actually hit in that position.

Obviously it's worth seeing what he has, but there's a good possibility he's a nobody despite the good numbers.

Perfect platoon partner for Varsho. 114 wRC+ vs LHP this year. 120 wRC+ for his career against them. We'd have him for this year plus 2 more. That's if the team thinks he's a AAAA player similar to Smith. The A's love those types.

Smith, Noda, Lane Thomas... ummm... Jonathan Davis, Andy Burns, Samad Taylor.... just thinking of guys in AA/AAA who performed well in the minors but didn't have strong profiles in the age vs. level models in the last few years that the organization has opted to trade or let walk. Surely many others in the last 7 years or so. Christian Lopes, Smith Jr... Rowdy Tellez kind of in this bucket, maybe. They probably WISH they traded Biggio early in his career haha. Probably WISH they traded Espinal after his all star year haha.

Smith was terrible as a minor leaguer for long stretches and had a historically bad year in New Hampshire. Schneider just didn't play much for some reason until last year. Schneider walks way more than Smith did. More comparable to Biggio than Smith, so question is whether he can grab a job with that skill set. Like Biggio he probably can't afford to get injured or slump much... With some luck could be Biggio 2019 for a few years, could also be Biggio 2021-23 (in which case he probably doesn't get a few years).

Not sure there is anything in the data except that on average players hit 40 points of batting average worse when they get to the majors... like Ryan Noda got worse, and Bo Bichette and Cavan Biggio got worse, and Tellez got worse, and Vlad got worse all with the same pattern (lost on average 40 points of batting average). That's the pattern. Like not sure I believe there is 5 dimensional chess 'getting rid of players just in time' except players lose 40 points in batting average, so a .265 minor league hitter has to be treated as a .225 major league hitter. They all get worse the same except for Lane Thomas. He stayed the same. A few hit .190 for a few weeks (as anyhone can do) and don't get a chance to regress to their true talent .230. Ryan Noda - .264 .407 .486, | .230 .370 .420 Lane Thomas - .254 .330 .430 | .250 .330 .437 Jonathan Davis .250 .360 .400 | .199 .290 .300 Rowdy .273 .343 .450 | .230 .300 .450 Biggio .252 .373 .418 | .225 .338 .390 Vlad .330 .414 .531 | .280 .350 .490 Bo .321 .380 .515 | .301 .342 .492
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted July 19, 2023 Posted July 19, 2023 Lane Thomas is a prime example of not knowing what you have. A clear organizational need dealt off for the crapshoot lottery which is Latin Free Agency. Seems like the guys sign for nothing have the same odds of making it as the big money guys.
Spanky__99 Old-Timey Member Posted July 19, 2023 Posted July 19, 2023 Lane Thomas was moved way before he showed any promise and was in high A as a 21 year old, that move wasn't anything like the others mentioned.

Sometimes players just randomly develop in a way you can't have expected. They traded him in 2017 while he was in A+ and having a mediocre year. STL also got nothing out of him then traded him for the final 66 innings of Jon Lester's career, which were worth exactly 0 WAR. Lester had a 5.43 FIP at the time of the trade and had given Washington 0.1 WAR in 75 innings. So, Thomas was worthless at that time...
