Spanky__99 Old-Timey Member Posted June 29, 2021 Posted June 29, 2021 I went through a similar lull in the mid 90's until probably about 2005 or so. After the 1994-1995 strike and terrible 1995 Jays team I sort of lost interest in baseball for awhile. I didn't have cable television for a good chunk of time during this period as well so it made it very hard to actually watch any of the games. It took regaining access to cable television and having an easy venue for watching games again to rekindle my passion for baseball. After the strike and my age... MLB was the last thing on my mind.

TwistedLogic Old-Timey Member Posted June 29, 2021 Posted June 29, 2021 Strike killed it for me. It was the Burnett/Ryan signings that got me hooked again. I was born in 93 so I vaguely remember the Burnett/Ryan/Glaus era but I was mostly a casual baseball fan throughout those early parts of my life. I saw Tony Fernandez play in person as a kid, I remember playing outside and hearing my dad screaming from inside the house when Delgado hit his 3rd and 4th home runs in the same game and I convinced my high school friends to go to the Halladay vs Burnett game with me. The sport was always kinda present around me and I loved watching when I did but I was such a filthy casual that I was upset when Vernon Wells was traded away. I didn't understand the idea of a salary dump, lmao. I started following the Jays through box scores in 2010 just because of how many home runs they were hitting but I still wasn't watching many games and it didn't really register with me how special it was that Bautista hit 54 home runs. It was the start of the 2011 season that really got me into it. In a small time frame I went from barely following the sport (I don't remember the Bautista extension) to becoming a hardcore and wanting to consume every piece of baseball information I could. I joined baseball forums, I was learning about advanced stats, I was listening to every interview and podcast I could find, I was arguing with people that Jose Bautista should be MVP over Adrian Gonzalez. It was like an overnight switch that flipped for me and I remained completely obsessed until 2017.
Daniel Labude Jays Centre Contributor Posted June 29, 2021 Posted June 29, 2021 Moreno and Martin out again tonight
Benito Verified Member Posted June 29, 2021 Posted June 29, 2021 Is it possible that the Jays (and other teams) are being more cautious, and giving players more rest as a result of having had no minor leagues last year? Just a guess, and could be no real correlation.

Ray Verified Member Posted June 29, 2021 Posted June 29, 2021 Moreno and Martin out again tonight Martin is on the 7-day IL after getting HBP in the helmet: Thankfully, he seemed mostly fine and the helmet got the brunt of the pitch, but he's probably out a couple weeks and is going through concussion protocol.

bronson44 Verified Member Posted June 29, 2021 Posted June 29, 2021 That's Moreno's 3rd game off in a row, with an off day mixed in. There must be something going on with him. Just hope it's minor.

I used to head over to my grandmother's house after school to peruse the box scores in the newspaper and to pick up VHS tapes with the latest games on them. She was like my baseball enabler, aside from listening on the radio and the occasional weekend game I had no access to Jays games so it totally rocked that she was able to hook me up like that.
The Cats Ass Old-Timey Member Posted June 30, 2021 Posted June 30, 2021 He’s playing LF tonight too. It’d be nice to have a 2nd legit super utility guy. Especially one that can handle SS(only position Biggio hasn’t played in the majors).

Virgil_Hiltz Verified Member Posted June 30, 2021 Posted June 30, 2021 Futures game roster announced Martin the only Jays prospect playing Moreno must be a bust then! (I know probably a numbers crunch)
metafour Verified Member Posted June 30, 2021 Posted June 30, 2021 It's a game of filling the rosters while also making sure that every team is represented. The biggest joke this year is Jasson Dominguez being on the roster. He's literally played in two FCL (GCL) games and doesn't even have a hit yet in his CAREER. Like holy f***, some "point" of this has always been to showcase and reward prospects who are actually performing.
5minutesforframing Verified Member Posted June 30, 2021 Posted June 30, 2021 If they're only going to pick one guy from the Jays' system it should be Moreno.
Spanky__99 Old-Timey Member Posted June 30, 2021 Posted June 30, 2021 I believe Moreno's injured, it would explain him not on that listing. He hasn't played in 5 days, he must be on the 7 day IL.

Benito Verified Member Posted June 30, 2021 Posted June 30, 2021 Oof. Hopefully the diagnosis is minor ailment, and he'll return and pick right back up where he left.

I couldn't watch any baseball for years when they traded Roy Halladay. Home grown hall of famer in his prime; signed multiple team friendly extensions instead of testing the FA market; full NTC per his request. After the WS glory years, a star wanting to spend his career in Toronto was really touching. Then Ricciardi says he's shopping Halladay and the entire tone of the relationship transforms overnight. He's gone not long after. I didn't start following regularly again until Anthopoulos traded for Donaldson.
Eat My Shatkins Verified Member Posted July 1, 2021 Posted July 1, 2021 Kirk 2 for 3 with a double and a walk so far tonight. The guy is automatic at the plate pretty much. Smith had another homer and is 1 for 2 with a walk.

Just FYI it was AA that traded Halladay and he requested to be traded cause it wasn't happening here.
