Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted July 27, 2015 Posted July 27, 2015 The major problem with Shields, as I see it, is that he'll opt out after 2016 if he has a good season. And if he has a bad season, you're stuck with him.
DuckDuckGose Verified Member Posted July 27, 2015 Posted July 27, 2015 It would be pretty funny if San Diego got one year of Shields for $10M and then got decent prospects for the remainder of his backloaded deal. Maybe Preller isn't quite as stupid as we think. Worked pretty well for Loria, surprised more front offices haven't gone that route!
DuckDuckGose Verified Member Posted July 27, 2015 Posted July 27, 2015 The thing is that they probably could not have signed James Shields in free agency for a similar amount. Many good starting pitchers have recently declined to take the Blue Jays money in free agency. But we may never know for sure on Shields. The Jays wont go 5yrs for pitchers and they wont give player options/no trade clauses, so Shields was never coming here. That being said it's not like they couldn't be in on more FA's if they didn't shoot themselves in the foot before the bidding even starts.
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted July 27, 2015 Posted July 27, 2015 Worked pretty well for Loria, surprised more front offices haven't gone that route! Did it really, though? They traded Marisnick for nothing, traded Escobar for nothing, Nicolino is nothing, and Hechavarria has given them approximately 0.1 WAR over 3 seasons. They haven't used that money for shrewd free agent signings, and they haven't sniffed the playoffs since the trade.
LTR Verified Member Posted July 27, 2015 Posted July 27, 2015 I'm pretty sure this could not be more wrong for like 27 or 28 teams. mmmk was just trying to add some comic relief

Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted July 27, 2015 Posted July 27, 2015 Repeat after me fellas "Aaron Sanchez isn't Delin Betances"
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted July 27, 2015 Posted July 27, 2015 So its just 1 year of Shields 1.3 years, if he's good. More if he's bad.
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted July 27, 2015 Posted July 27, 2015 Repeat after me fellas "Aaron Sanchez isn't Delin Betances" Dellin Betances was completely written off as a prospect, Sanchez never was.

The original deal worked out well; Marisnick, DeScalafini, Hech, Escobar and Hendo vs Reyes and Beuhrle for the backloaded portions of their deals is win. They mismanaged their assets afterwards though.

After all, Detroit is likely going into sell mode after the Red Sox bloodied them last night, and they're facing a tough series with the Rays, which they will likely lose 2 of 3 or get swept (Odorizzi and Archer go in the series)
DuckDuckGose Verified Member Posted July 27, 2015 Posted July 27, 2015 I don't think those are hard-and-fast rules. Vernon Wells had an opt-out and the Jays went five with Ricky Romero (he was already under team control, but AA said at the time that the team required a revisal of club policy). Shields got four years including an opt-out from San Diego. Had Shields been receptive to Toronto and the Blue Jays been motivated to sign him, something probably could have happened. Romero was a special exception and apparently his deal going sour solidified their view on longterm deals for pitcher. That opt-out for Shields would never have happened with the Jays, Opt-outs are also against club policy. Would've killed the Jays chances at making a deal the second SD offered it. Far too player friendly for him to not take it.

They mismanaged their assets afterwards though. And at the rate things are going, the Marlins will be worse off by the time Latos (gotten in the DeSclafani trade) gets dealt to a contender, Alvarez ends up getting TJS (likely) and Hech sees his salary soar after this season in arb, which likely means he'll be getting dealt again soon. Did I forget to mention the Marisnick deal has been disastrous, as Cosart, received in the trade, has vertigo issues.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted July 27, 2015 Posted July 27, 2015 Edwin for Martinez please I'd have to render a guess there's a 0.001% chance of that happening.

DuckDuckGose Verified Member Posted July 27, 2015 Posted July 27, 2015 AJ Burnett got an opt-out too come to think of it. Romero was a special exception in the same way that Shields could be a special exception. The only policy that the Blue Jays have truly stuck to is the five-year-max one. The others appear malleable. They even gave out incentives recently, to Johan. Ricciardi signed AJ Burnett before the policies were in place (part of the reason Beeston put them in place was to avoid the BJ Ryan/Burnett deals).
TheHurl Site Manager Posted July 27, 2015 Posted July 27, 2015 and Hech sees his salary soar after this season in arb, Has a defensive SS ever got a big Arb reward? Brendan Ryan got $1M, $1.75M and $3.25M. I would say that the Hech gets the $2.35 that Cozart got.
pickoff22 Verified Member Posted July 27, 2015 Posted July 27, 2015 Does anyone think there's any chance the Jays concede the season and move Buehrle to a serious contender as a rental? No. The outrage from players and fans would be massive. Even if they drop the next 3 before Friday's deadline it's hard to see any scenario where that happens, nor do I think it should.
Swervin81 Verified Member Posted July 27, 2015 Posted July 27, 2015 Rajai Davis? Lets see... horrendous defender, zero baseball IQ, and can only hit lefties and run. Seems so... anti-Cardinal. Him and Corey Patterson might've been the dumbest ever OF in baseball history here in Toronto.
jaysfan2014 Old-Timey Member Posted July 27, 2015 Posted July 27, 2015 Does anyone think there's any chance the Jays concede the season and move Buehrle to a serious contender as a rental? No. Does anyone really think the Twins will stay a contender? They've played way over their head (no offense to Molitor). PECOTA and FanGraphs all say that the Jays will get at least the 2nd wild card, as they all think the Twins will fade badly down the stretch, as their lackluster pitching staff and OBP issues come back to haunt them when they play contenders down the stretch.

jaysfan2014 Old-Timey Member Posted July 27, 2015 Posted July 27, 2015 Bautista for Syndergaard 10-5 rights, not happening. And the Mets can't take on salary due to their financial situation re: Bernie Madoff scandal.

Nadir Mohamed just clogged up the plumbing taking a big dump at Rogers head office. It's going to take millions to fix the plumbing. The Jays can no longer afford to take on salary now.

According to rumors, the Jays have some money to spend on the trade market. Mets can't take on salary because ownership is deep in debt due to the Bernie Madoff scandal. Otherwise, guys like Upton, Zobrist, etc. would be Mets by now.
