HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted March 5, 2015 Posted March 5, 2015 He's been doing it since he signed, and he's only getting exposure now because he's a top prospect
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted March 5, 2015 Posted March 5, 2015 It's funny to think that before he was drafted, Norris was basically only known to us for his allegedly outrageous salary demands. In the end, he signed for much less than what the experts were predicting. In hindsight, it seems like that aspect of his personality was scouted very poorly. He may have an ego but he's clearly not motivated by money.
Governator Community Moderator Posted March 5, 2015 Posted March 5, 2015 Last year when he was less of a name? That makes sense. whatever, I'm just saying it's nothing new for him it's just the media looking for a feel good story not him seeking attention

Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted March 5, 2015 Posted March 5, 2015 how can you not be Spanky99? I tend not to give a rats ass what players do on their own time, it's what they do between the lines that matter to me. Seems apparent to me, that you're just jelly, period.
North of 60 Verified Member Posted March 5, 2015 Posted March 5, 2015 I have no problem with Norris' lifestyle, but I do when you're a pro ball player. The Jays have invested money in this kid and it seems like the guy could do a better job taking care of himself. Sleeping in less than ideal conditions can't be good for the body in the long term, especially someone that already had shoulder issues. Also, how does he train, watch his nutrition, etc in the off-season? It seems Norris wants to be different just for the sake of being different.

The boy is in excellent physical shape; mentally he's strong and intelligent.

It's the media that continues to pump the van stories about Norris. And right in the story the Jays comment that Norris stays in great shape....if that changes, they'll get a little more concerned about the van life. Personally, I don't give a crap about the van....I want to see him develop into an ace that will carry this team for the next decade.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted March 5, 2015 Author Posted March 5, 2015 Guy is just a freak with god given ability. You could tell in the article he even doesn't really understand why he is so athletic coming from a family with no athletic background. The guy definitely trains hard even if he sleeps in a van. We won't have to worry when hes in the big leagues though as he will be in 5 star hotels.

First of all Norris doesn't owe the Jays anything, he can decide to quit Baseball today and still get to keep his bonus money on clean moral grounds. Second, as the article describes over and over again he's really into the outdoors and its a core part of his identity, that can't be anything but a positive sign when it comes to fitness, the risks of injury with his lifestyle are minor to non existent.

jb22 Verified Member Posted March 6, 2015 Posted March 6, 2015 I'm kinda scared that Norris is going to go on a trip some offseason to find his soul or something like that. And on that trip he'll decide he wants to spend the rest of his time on earth in some 3rd world country just hanging out and talking to his van. I can see this happening right after he wins his first CY Young. The next Ricky Williams, minus the weed (maybe).
Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted March 6, 2015 Posted March 6, 2015 This is all great and all... But we know exactly how this is going to play out... Right now, he's a top prospect. He's coming off an amazing season. The sky's the limit... So he's the coolest guy in the world. If he struggles. If he isn't able to succeed at the make league level or meet expectations, watch how quickly his lifestyle is scrutinized and how quickly he becomes "a flake". People are full of s*** that way. You could have ended that last sentence two words earlier...

Should the Jays be worried about Norris’s nutrition and rest? Well, sure ... Just as they should be worried about those things with all their players, and especially their younger players. But let’s be honest! Generally speaking, teams have done a TERRIBLE job in these areas for the huge majority of history. The meal money for minor leaguers has traditionally been terrible, the food in the locker rooms scurrilous. Teams have done little to prevent or discourage young players (or old) from going out every night and pounding those Budweisers (or worse). Granted, things have probably gotten a lot better in recent years, as more logical heads have come to run front offices. But if we’re talking about a typical organization, I would probably be thrilled if my top prospect was going his own way. Because the old ways are pretty crummy. I've always thought this myself after reading minor leaguers are given peanut butter sandwiches etc..before games. Have there been any teams out there who have hired gourmet chefs to cook for players both Major and Minor leagues? Seems like it would cost barely anything and have a real benefit to performance.

I respect this kid's choice to enjoy life the way he see's fit, it's a great way to live. But with that said, I wouldn't be surprised at all if he quits in 5-10 years to continue the pursuit of this minimalistic lifestyle.

The guy really does seem to love baseball though. Maybe if he deals with some injuries he retires when he's 30 but if he is a good player I can see him pitching for a long time.

Am I foolish?? If the top four guys stay healthy and productive (Dickey/Stro/Hutch/Buehrle), then I think the rotation will be fine. Really can't afford one of them missing any time, though. Estrada in the rotation and Norris as the main depth piece is the best way to go. Of course, if the Jays get to the point where they need a 7th, 8th, or 9th SP due to injuries, then they are screwed badly.
