Spoonovic Verified Member Posted November 29, 2014 Posted November 29, 2014 I've been thinking about the Jays roster a lot the last 16 hours like I am sure the most of us have. One aspect that has come up is the luxury involved with not having to commit the DH position to one person like we have to forever (Lind, EE, Big Hurt, Matt Stairs, etc) Instead we could use the DH position this year to give our regular guys days off and to help us use our platoons. For example, give Donaldson a day off the turf by playing him at DH versus a leftie and starting Valencia at 3rd. Just one example, Donaldson wont be getting many days off from the field. It sure would be nice if we could use the DH position to rest some of our older players throughout the year. Jays played 10 games with National League rules last year. It would be nice if we could allocate the DH position like this in 2015: EE: 75 games Reyes: 37 games (majority at home) Bautista: 25 games Martin: 15 games Thoughts?
gbill2004 Verified Member Posted November 29, 2014 Posted November 29, 2014 Yep a lot of teams are doing this now.
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted November 29, 2014 Posted November 29, 2014 Yeah finefine but I'd take a David Ortiz over that
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted November 29, 2014 Posted November 29, 2014 I completely agree with you. This lineup is strong enough that I don't think we need a TRUE DH kinda guy. DH should be split between Edwin/Reyes/Smoak/Navarro/whoever needs some rest
Atothe Old-Timey Member Posted November 29, 2014 Posted November 29, 2014 Yeah finefine but I'd take a David Ortiz over that David Ortiz has a hall of fame bat, not many like him. Actually the number is closer to 0 then to 5
glory Old-Timey Member Posted November 29, 2014 Posted November 29, 2014 Yeah don't get a DH. Just rotate the main guys in that spot (Bautista, Donaldson, EE, Reyes, and Martin). I'd try to get a guy like Sean Rodriguez on the bench to make it easier to DH guys while having a suitable bench player to play the field.

Spoonovic Verified Member Posted November 29, 2014 Author Posted November 29, 2014 Who is playing SS instead of Reyes? Someone who is a much better defender. Not sure who yet.
RIPEXPOS Verified Member Posted November 29, 2014 Posted November 29, 2014 So opening day... or a one game wc playoff... let's say against a righty.... who's batting DH? Smoak?
Spoonovic Verified Member Posted November 29, 2014 Author Posted November 29, 2014 So opening day... or a one game wc playoff... let's say against a righty.... who's batting DH? Smoak? If the game was today? Probably Smoak. Hopefully things change though, I am not a fan of his.
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted November 29, 2014 Posted November 29, 2014 DH: 1-Ortiz 2-Edwin 3-BillyB 4-??????? DH spot should be used to rest player.
RIPEXPOS Verified Member Posted November 29, 2014 Posted November 29, 2014 Trading Lind was so silly. He and Valencia are the perfect DH platoon. Combined they equal an elite bat. Both provide depth on the corner infield. 1. Jose Reyes, SS 2. (Markakis?), LF 3. Jose Bautista, RF 4. Edwin Encarnacion, 1B 5. Josh Donaldson, 3B 6. Lind/Valencia, DH 7. Russell Martin, C 8. Travis/Izturis, 2B 9. Dalton Pompey, CF Bench Valencia/Lind, CIF Ryan Goins, MIF Josh Thole, C Kevin Pillar, OF
Ultimate Verified Member Posted November 30, 2014 Posted November 30, 2014 ANother benefit to leaving the DH spot open is that you more likely to get lucky and find someone for cheap who provides surprise production. THe odds of this happening at a particular position are much lower but now you can take someone from any position either in Spring Training or during the season.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted November 30, 2014 Posted November 30, 2014 Anyone think Donaldson could play SS for a few games?
Caper Verified Member Posted November 30, 2014 Posted November 30, 2014 Especially when you consider we already have a spot tied up with Thole. Plus, Goins needs to DH on his off days.
gbill2004 Verified Member Posted November 30, 2014 Posted November 30, 2014 Especially when you consider we already have a spot tied up with Thole. Plus, Goins needs to DH on his off days. Goins as DH. I love it 😀
Ziggyy108 Verified Member Posted November 30, 2014 Posted November 30, 2014 You actually need to have talented players on your bench to pull this off successfully .... Our bench has been mostly scrubs for a long time now
reedjohnsonfan Verified Member Posted November 30, 2014 Posted November 30, 2014 Good idea. It will be interesting to see if Smoak is on the opening day roster. If he is you have to assume they're giving him a shot be an everyday player. No point in having a player like that on the bench, but then again they had 3 catchers for a while...
Ziggyy108 Verified Member Posted November 30, 2014 Posted November 30, 2014 I'd definitely feel much better about leaving the DH spot open if we didn't have 2 gigantic holes at 2B and LF ....

I don't think Thole is certain to have a roster spot. If Martin can catch Dickey they can have a different backup catcher.
gbill2004 Verified Member Posted November 30, 2014 Posted November 30, 2014 Has anyone asked Martin if he can catch a knuckleball?
labadee Verified Member Posted November 30, 2014 Posted November 30, 2014 Especially when you consider we already have a spot tied up with Thole. Plus, Goins needs to DH on his off days. ideally you'd want a DH that can actually hit. Just bench him on his off days

Of course we are not in the room but it can be inferred that when the manager says "there have to be changes in the clubhouse" and the first move is moving Lind that he was a desired change.
Mikeleelop Verified Member Posted November 30, 2014 Posted November 30, 2014 Who is playing SS instead of Reyes? Goins can handle backup at SS and 2b defensively
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted November 30, 2014 Posted November 30, 2014 Goins can handle backup at SS and 2b defensively Yes. Goins is way better than Reyes defensively. But he's half the bat of course.
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted November 30, 2014 Posted November 30, 2014 I'd definitely feel much better about leaving the DH spot open if we didn't have 2 gigantic holes at 2B and LF .... Meh, a platoon of Pillar/Dirks is decent fof LF. 2B is a hole though, until Travis is ready to step in.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted November 30, 2014 Posted November 30, 2014 Goins can handle backup at SS and 2b defensively I don't want Goins starting 30 games...

We also have Mayberry in that mix plus Mayberry can spell Smoak at first too when EE is not at first and DH that is!

Mayberry, Dirks, Pillar, Smoak. There's no way all of these guys are on the opening day roster. No way.
