  1. Formerly regarded as a good prospect. He hasn't shown anything with the bat at the MLB level but he's known as being very good defensively at 3B. He has seen MLB time at all 4 infield positions as well. My guess is he takes URena's roster spot for now and is the utility infielder.
  2. I don't know. IF he could get 90% of his money and not have to worry about going to spring training, travelling around with the team and rehabbing his various injuries then maybe its something he'd consider.
  3. I wonder if this means that one of the young guys is going to make the team as a 4th outfielder. Maybe they rotate a few young guys through that spot so that one guy doesnt spend too much time on the bench. Really youve got 4 guys who should be starting at AAA ( Smith JR, Hernandez, Pompey, Alford). If you have one of those guys at the MLB level that frees up playing time for the other 3 at AAA (not to mention Parmlee and Fields).
  4. I don't believe we have 15 million left to spend despite what the Rogers guys keep saying. The 20 million (which became 15 million) was based on the MLBTR arbitration estimates which turned out to be off by more than 2 million. Also if past signings are any indication I think that Grandersons incentives reduce our available payroll as well. Rogers will probably require that any possible incentives be deducted from payroll. Available cash = 20 million - 2ish million for ARB adjustment - 5 million for CG = 13 million less incentives for CG. Im guessing we have 10-12 to spend. I think we're looking at 4 depth guys at 2-3 million each. Maybe a Lefty reliever, 1-2 RHP who could compete with Biagini and be relief options as well and then maybe a depth outfielder or backup catcher.
  5. I would leave both McGuire and Jansen at AAA at least to start the year. Neither has much experience at AAA and giving some seasoning there might increase the odds that either becomes a starter at the MLB level. Plus if you have both at AAA it will keep either from catching too many innings. Maybe let them each DH a little to get some extra at bats in. I would go with Maille or someone similar and cheap as the backup. In the event that Martin went on the DL again I would then turn to either McGuire or Jansen, whomever looks most ready at the time.
  6. Agreed, even if it means also taking on Darvish. If we were to sign both Darvish and Otani. I would use Otani as our Rightfielder and as a reliever.
  7. You really have no idea whether they will eat any of his salary to get rid of him. I am fairly certain they would be willing to eat some of it. The issue is that in order to move him they would probably have to eat a really high percentage of his remaining salary. When you are paying most of his salary anyway you might as well keep the player and hope he turns it around especially since he is a good clubhouse presence and we don't have a good alternative ready yet.
  8. You are assuming that his comments and his SSS RISP numbers are mutually exclusive. Goins is aware of the stat and he's aware that there are a lot of dumb fans out there who think it means something and this is what led to him making comments about his "different approach".
  9. Martin has put up a mid .700 OPS since he has been a Blue Jay which matches his career mark and is very good for a catcher. He puts up a lot of offensive value. God you make him sound like Jose Molina.
  10. Seattle is my favourite MLB park that I have been to. Have been to Toronto, Chicago both, Seattle, LA, San Fran, Oakland, Anaheim. The Boeing plant is probably pretty cool if you are into planes. It wasn't really my thing though. Apparently it is the biggest building in the world. Its definitely a day trip as its well outside of Seattle. The one thing in Seattle I would absolutely recommend that you do is the Underground Tour. It is the best tour I have been on in any city and have done it three times. You learn a lot about the history of the city and its very entertaining. The Experience Music Project and Sci Fi museum are near the space needle and the same ticket gets you into both. I definitely found that a worthwhile visit as well.
  11. What kind of quality do you really expect to be available on waivers during the season? Can you give me an example of someone who was on waivers last year that would be a step up over our current options?
  12. Can he be qualified a 2nd time? I thought once you were qualified once that was it for your career?
  13. Its certainly possible. But if they sign 2 outfielders (IE Saunders and Pagan) then Carerra likely doesn't make the team. If they only sign one outfielder, I see it being Pompey and Carerra competing for one job and I would lean towards Pompey.
  14. Completely irrelevant. THere are not games scheduled in January.
  15. How do you see Carerra fitting on the roster? If we have a 7 man bullpen and 4 man bench that leaves room for only a 4th outfielder (or if there is a 5th OF Pearce is that guy). And logic would seem to indicate that Upton will be needed as the fourth outfielder as at least one of our corner outfielders will require a platoon partner in Upton. Only way I see Carerra on the roster is if he is a starter or if Upton is somehow a starter.
  16. I see Pompey's floor as being equivalent to what Carerra is now. Pompey's career MLB OPS is in line with Carerra's career OPS and Carerra's 2016 OPS. Pompey might be the same as Zeke or he might have a little upside. I would definitely give him a chance on the strong side of the platoon if we only sign 1 outfielder. I might still prefer Pagan, Saunders and the draft pick over Bautista though. Then Pompey could get a few months in AAA and be the first callup when a starting outfielder goes down. Carerra had some nice moments last year but I really don't see how he can make the team in 2017.
  17. If he was clean he would have been able to put up somewhat decent numbers at AAA after his suspension was over.
  18. Logically your argument makes sense. But I remember hearing similar arguments for Brandon Morrow back in the day.
  19. Why would the Mets pick up half his salary when they could have just not picked up his option?
  20. I think the problem with that is that you want to have a better idea of what you have or don't have right now so that you can make other decisions. IE whether or not the Jays should be considering a player like Beltran who would also need to at least DH a fair bit.
  21. IMO opinion Smoak isn't even all that good. He's okay on balls in the dirt. So Edwin could have been just okay and then still been as good as Smoak.
  22. They are still far from an imperfect stat and we can't really rely on the small sample size in Morales case.
  23. You seem to be misunderstanding my point. I am not suggesting there should be a case for him being valuable defensively.
  24. Thank you. THere have been a lot of popular conceptions about a players defensive value here that turned out to be inaccurate. Usually it went the other way though.
  25. The argument is that he could be average, below average or horrible and either way he probably would have played the same number of games at 1B in KC that he did. If someone thinks he is only a DH there needs to be a better explanation for it.
