Mikeleelop Verified Member Posted November 19, 2014 Author Posted November 19, 2014 Its not if you free up cash and actually sign scherzer or lester It is foolish to dump the fifth place finisher in mvp voting who is on a 15million contract. When he actually generates close to $30milliion in value Crazy
Qwerty Verified Member Posted November 20, 2014 Posted November 20, 2014 assume every team gets the same amount of WAR to spend: The best team would be the one where every player has the ability to play another position and all positions are covered multiple times. If you take your best offensive player and multiply this impact, you not only cover more positions, you diversify. You trade bautista because two years of control means two years of investment risk. His value externally is higher than it is internally. See: outfield Market

Qwerty Verified Member Posted November 20, 2014 Posted November 20, 2014 We are gonna sign lester and trade bautista. Bautista's trade will net multiple MLB players, each with valued positional flexibility and years of control. My theory doesnt apply to pitchers. I dont care if jed lowrie is a free agent thats not the point. We need an ace.

ScientificReason Verified Member Posted November 20, 2014 Posted November 20, 2014 We need a starter big time, what are the chances everything breaks right for this rotation full of question marks?
wardhenke1 Verified Member Posted November 20, 2014 Posted November 20, 2014 Whoever we sign had better be willing to take a back-loaded contract or AA had better have a corresponding roster move ready. I hadn't realized just how back-loaded Martin's contract actually is; essentially we swapped Lind for Martin salary-wise this year and our overall payroll right now is at $109m.

That 109M doesn't include the league min guys, or the arbitration guys. And I can't f***ing believe we have to pay Ricky Romero $8M in 2015.

saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted November 20, 2014 Posted November 20, 2014 It's a contract year for him, he'll be hungry for success in spring training! I can't help but wonder if there's any chance he could be a bullpen piece. Odds are long, but he's clearly had injury issues to go along with mental doubts. He's a long shot to be able to play on the team, but maybe he could come out of nowhere and compete for a bullpen position if he's healthier this year.

He's a sunk cost, so it would be nice if he contributed SOMETHING to the MLB club this season, but I expect a poor season at AAA for him, then a career in independent ball (or becoming a junior partner at (Josh) Towers Baseball Instruction, which is totally a real thing...)

ScientificReason Verified Member Posted November 20, 2014 Posted November 20, 2014 Why do we need a starter? We'd just be bumping down 1.5 WAR. We have plenty of depth to. Pitching is our deepest spot. Depth is not that impressive when we have a bunch of mid to back end rotation guys....Quality versus quantity....We have hutch, who was all over the place, we have no idea how stroman will do in his first full season, Dickey is inconsistent and 40, buerhle is a back in rotation guy now, and happ who is also a back end starter.....You will not win the series with this rotation. You cannot rely on everything breaking right, we might be able to squeeze in the playoffs with this rotation if everything goes right and the offense is good, big if, but then we have no shot at winning the entire thing. It is a very shaky rotation.

BigBounceyBlueBalls Old-Timey Member Posted November 20, 2014 Posted November 20, 2014 Dodgers want a short stop and a pitcher, also looks like they could use more veteran catchers .... Hmmmmm! Reyes, Dickey + his platoon partner,Navarro! For Crawford,Howell, one of Baez/Garcia and Darnell Sweeny? And we save about 13 mill to boot!

The trade deadline is where teams try to add that ace to put them over the top if they are in deep WS contention rather than loading up the risk factor ten-fold in the off season. An ace for the sake of a quality pitcher is irrelevant until the team is ready for it, see Roy Halladay.

Why do I venture onto this side of the board again... Not sure why do you?? You seem like the type who cries and has a hissy fit when someones thought don't allign with yours...Many young pitchers struggle in there second year as the league adjusts....and yes dickey was inconsistent a lot and is 40.... It is a average staff that has to have everything break right, you guys are dilusional if you think we are a playoff team with that staff.

glory Old-Timey Member Posted November 20, 2014 Posted November 20, 2014 Sign Shields for the money they are offering Sandoval, and trade Dickey, Happ, and Navarro for help in LF, 1B/DH, and the bullpen.
Qwerty Verified Member Posted November 20, 2014 Posted November 20, 2014 you don't change the makeup of this team without moving one of the dominicans. i dont mean this to be racist, but we need to reduce the clique-ey-ness that comes with reyes, bautista and encarnacion. enough with the stupid handshakes. winning teams do their celebrating inside the dugout. and they do it as a team. to get the best out of this team, things need to be less comfortable. leadership comes in many forms. most of which happen when the fans cant see. dickey expects to go out and throw 6-7 innings every game and does his job queitly. when he gets taken out, we hear he gets mad because he wants to be out there. thats character and leadership. leadership is not getting clutch hits during the regular season or having the best stat-line. leadership is also not what it appears when a fan watches a game. leadership is what emerges once you have a team playing as one. we sort of have that with the pitching staff. buehrle is the "leader", but he does it quietly. dickey offsets his starpower and fills another necessary role. the process of offsetting starpower on offense started with martin. although it's not done yet. you are going to see bautista or encarnacion traded. maybe reyes but that'll be more difficult. one of the three wont be on the opening day roster.
