Inklink Old-Timey Member Posted November 3, 2014 Posted November 3, 2014 AA on Fan590 this morning put this deal in a little perspective. Only 2 teams were interested. Might be some hot air, but thought I'd mention.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted November 3, 2014 Posted November 3, 2014 Nobody but AA Beeston and Pelly know how much the jays have to spend. I just believe it is going down. 140M is what everything points to. Just doubt that will be the starting payroll...AA has to leave some space for his wheel of waiver claims.
jaysfan2014 Old-Timey Member Posted November 3, 2014 Posted November 3, 2014 140M is what everything points to. Just doubt that will be the starting salary. Fair enough. Still a chance we may see a Happ or Buehrle trade on the way, though, to get a 2B or OF to help our team. Happ apparently could get a lot... a number of teams are interested in him.

I still think there's a lot of moves coming in the next 2 months.

But my gut tells me he's going to non tender Estrada and this was all just for payroll flexibility.

I would love to see that happen, just to see Wilmer have to backtrack on his Estrada back-patting comments.

Might be some hot air, but thought I'd mention. I wouldn't be surprised if that were true. A platoon DH with injury concerns and an $8M salary probably isn't going to have a huge market.

I still think there's a lot of moves coming in the next 2 months. Fine But if money is that tight he had f***ing better well trade Reyes or Buerhle. Cause penny pinching won't fix 2-3 holes. FTR I really want to keep Buerhle for next year
glory Old-Timey Member Posted November 3, 2014 Posted November 3, 2014 Non-tendering Estrada to avoid paying Lind's buyout would be hysterical. I actually agree with trading Lind, and am not particularly fond of Estrada, but that would be such a Rogers/AA thing to do.

RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted November 3, 2014 Posted November 3, 2014 I hate that AA has to Explain his moves. I don't want him to do that. He shouldn't have to think what media/fanbase will have to think of his moves. He needs to focus on making the Jays a playoff team. period.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted November 3, 2014 Posted November 3, 2014 This trade isn't THAT bad. Lind is a platoon DH (or piss poor defensive 1B if you're willing) with big injury concerns that makes 7.5 million. He isn't going to get you much in a trade especially when one trick ponies like him are plentiful in FA (assuming your team doesn't already have a guy like him already). To get Estrada who is a serviceable swingman who will pull in around 4 million isn't that bad of a deal.
TBJ12 Verified Member Posted November 3, 2014 Posted November 3, 2014 Reyes is not a tradeable asset. Its just that simple. No team would take that on. I think it's been proven just about any player can be traded if the price is right. Jays would most certainly have to eat some cash but Reyes could be dealt.

Dealing with the media is part of the job description, it's not his choice. It's just something that his employers would naturally expect and frankly he says so little of substance that it's ultimtely inconsequential anyways. It's just a show of good faith to the fan base. I really can't see how it would impact his ability to make the Jays a playoff team.

If you are a believer in communist style central planning, where the wise ones (such as Beeston and AA and Moogie) guide us to glory then yes... you are correct. Otherwise it is reasonable to make moves that the media/fanbase like. And keep in mind the media/fanbase is not just made of idiots. There are segments of the fanbase that are quite smart (many of them on this board) and pandering to them would encourage stronger moves.
gruber92 Old-Timey Member Posted November 3, 2014 Posted November 3, 2014 wow...pathetic You see some of the s*** that exists on this board? It sad really because the majority of posters here are pretty level headed informative types.
LongTimeReader Verified Member Posted November 3, 2014 Posted November 3, 2014 Did anyone else know Lind's nickname is "Sleepy" ? Lind's nickname is "Sleepy," which he said was bestowed upon him by former teammate Marco Scutaro in 2008. What was the derivation of that? "I'm pretty laid-back," said Lind. "And sometimes I look a little rough in the morning. I don't look like a million dollars." http://www.jsonline.com/blogs/sports/281316321.html
kgm1 Verified Member Posted November 3, 2014 Posted November 3, 2014 (edited) Lind on MLB radio with Duquette and Farron. Before going on Duquette really beat up the trade. Said this was AA paying Melvin back for stealing Lawrie. Lind on finding out . Thought AA was calling him about exercising his option ,instead told him he was traded to the Brewers and That was the end of the call. Said he thought he was a key cog in the lineup and was surprised. Said he knows no one on the Brewers. Did not sound happy. On hitting coaches. Stated Cito, Murphy, and Mottola taught him lots. On talking hitting with other players he only talked to Rasmus. Edited November 4, 2014 by kgm1

I got 126 when I filled out the 25 man roster with league min salaries. AA is right in that with pickups like Smoak and Dirks it gives them a lot more options as these guys can be DFAd. Even if they are released after ST i think it only costs one sixth of their salary. I do believe Fransisco will be DFA,d but that 2.2 mil or more will be spent on minor league signings.

Might be some hot air, but thought I'd mention. There have been reports out there that the 2nd team was the White Sox, but they didn't want to part with a similar (spare) part. I would've thought an AL team would be willing to pay more for a guy like Lind than an NL one, but I was wrong again.

They valued Lind to fit in the middle of their righty dominated lineup plus face all the right handed pitching in their division.
gruber92 Old-Timey Member Posted November 4, 2014 Posted November 4, 2014 This was the original bet offered. You fabricated the assinine bet, that will never happen. All my statements were made with the understanding that Goins starts 96 games like Lind did. You must think I'm an idiot to bet that a replacement player will start 96 games next year. All I'm saying is head to head, Goins will equate or out WAR Lind given the same amount of starts. How on God's green earth can the mighty 141 wRC+ Adam Lind lose a WAR battle to a career minor leaguer who is only good for a 70-80 wRC+ in AAA? LMFAO..

I'm sticking my nose in an argument where it doesn't belong, but how is comparing the WAR of Goins and Lind exactly fair? Goins has the inherent advantage of being able to field as well as bat. That is Lind's own fault for being such a terrible fielder that he became a 30 yo DH...but still, this isn't the greatest of arguments to be name-calling over multiple posts in a thread that should be dedicated to AA's strange behaviour and panicking over the disaster 2015 is turning into less than a week after the 2014 World Series ended.
Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted November 4, 2014 Posted November 4, 2014 He doesn't start 96 games I don't think that's the type of jinx of a guarantee that you want to be putting on this team. I think it should be something like this: If Goins starts 96 games next year, the team will have 96 losses and 96 fans left. So it really won't matter who out-WARs who next year because by then we'd all be swimming with the fishes in despair.
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted November 4, 2014 Posted November 4, 2014 I think it's been proven just about any player can be traded if the price is right. Jays would most certainly have to eat some cash but Reyes could be dealt. If the Jays have to eat half of Reyes salary, which is what it would take, than its a bad deal. Suppose that the Jays do make a deal and save $11M, would you take a SS of Reyes caliber for $11M. Of course Thus trading Reyes should not be looked at. Trading Burly however is another matter and needs to be executed as soon as possible.
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted November 4, 2014 Posted November 4, 2014 Sounds like something we need...oh wait!! No we dont need a roster player/2 months DL player who only DH's against RHP, oh and his power has just about dissapeared.
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted November 4, 2014 Posted November 4, 2014 The more games Goins plays, the less WAR he will have. That's means "negative production"
