If Dickey winds up needing TJS, he should punch him in the face for the jinx Dickey has no UCL. It's impossible for him to need TJS.

burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted September 9, 2014 Posted September 9, 2014 Mike Wilner just suggested on Tim and Sid that he would rather have young arms than young position players and that arms have more trade value. Also suggested Kevin Pillar could be a good LF. Funny because Sid (who doesn't know much about baseball) was saying how you shouldn't be caught up in the hype surrounding all the SP because all it takes is one pitch for a disaster to happen.

There was a time when Wilner came off as the smart one on Sportsnet, the one most sensible in his baseball analyst. Even if he was wrong, you could at least understand his rationale. Now he just says the most homerish thing and the rationale is whatever suits that point of view.

I even thought that this year thinking he just tries to argue for the sake of arguing sometimes. The worst part is comparing Melky Cabrera to Choo for contract expectations this offseason.

His argument does have some rationale. I'd rather have multitude of cheap young arms and if time came to shove to spend on free agency, I'd rather spend money on the bats rather than arms. It depends. Not every positional player pans out - look at Beckham, Snider, Ackely, Montero, Hermida, etc. I think young arms like a Sanchez or Stroman would have more trade value than lets say a hitting prospect like Nick Castellanos in real life.

For every young position player prospect that turns out to be nothing there is a pitching prospect who doesn't as well. And even if position players don't hit their ceilings they can still turn into useful players much like Ackley as you mentioned. Pitchers can easily get hurt or become ineffective while position players usually have a much higher floor.

It seems like young arm prospects are always in demand, more than positional player prospects to an extent. If you trade them at the right time, and maximize on their value - thats ideal. For example, Aaron Sanchez probably right now is at his highest value. If Sanchez goes out next year and goes all Bauer out of the rotation, his value takes a big hit.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted September 9, 2014 Posted September 9, 2014 I hope Wilner suggesting that Pillar in LF is a good idea is not a sign.

burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted September 10, 2014 Posted September 10, 2014 Julia Wilner! Its one thing to post about Mike Wilner and his knowledge about baseball but posting about his family is pretty bad. Leave his private life out of it especially his kids.
GeorgiaPeach Verified Member Posted September 10, 2014 Posted September 10, 2014 Who comes out of the rotation and what do you tell them? The team's in a panic and actually trying to win now
GeorgiaPeach Verified Member Posted September 10, 2014 Posted September 10, 2014 I'd say antagonism lives here. Not when you're defending casual fans.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted September 10, 2014 Posted September 10, 2014 days of research..... inconclusive.... incompetent
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted September 10, 2014 Posted September 10, 2014 Its one thing to post about Mike Wilner and his knowledge about baseball but posting about his family is pretty bad. Leave his private life out of it especially his kids. I didn't think he was trying to embarass his family. On the contrary, I suspect he thought she looked relatively attractive for someone whose father is Mike Wilner. I understand your concern but it's likely just a publicly availalable profile pic. No one's been dragged in the muck here or exposed in any new way. I'll admit that it's a little odd that he even thought to look for that but it's of no consequence.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted September 10, 2014 Posted September 10, 2014 He just overrates his ability to analyze the game and is too quick to label fans as below him in intellect and analysis acumen. There's a certain complacency with Wilner. The fan base gets smarter and he just stays the same and comes off more and more ignorant and arrogant because he refuses to catch up to new research and refuses to even acknowledge the gaps in his knowledge.
Olerud363 Old-Timey Member Posted September 10, 2014 Posted September 10, 2014 Wilner seems like a reasonable guy in real life and I appreciate that he thoroughly loves baseball as a game, demonstrated by his playing in a men's league, playing of sim baseball and pursuance of a career in baseball. He just overrates his ability to analyze the game and is too quick to label fans as below him in intellect and analysis acumen. Like a lot of people (AA) he's an ordinary guy just trying to earn a living. He doesn't believe half the s*** he says. His job is to make the organization look good to the cassuals. He's a glorified PR guy. In fact half his job is to make Beeston and AA look good to the other Rogers suits. Typically people that have jobs that hundreds of other people could do (with a lucky break), typically these types band together and make it seem they are unique somehow. Wilner, Stoeten, AA, Beeston are in symbiotic relationships and their main audience is the handful of people that could fire them. The Mike Wilner show is for suits at Rogers who will listen for 5 minutes a month to make sure that the old baseball team is run by good guys... that is who it's for... no one else. Ratings are secondary.
Olerud363 Old-Timey Member Posted September 10, 2014 Posted September 10, 2014 Roger suit 1 - The rif-raf on the message board says some guy JFas is a better analyst then our own Mike Wilner or our GM AA... I do not understand. Why do we have this Mike Wilner and AA. Roger suit 2 - Not sure, let's check out the show tomorrow, maybe I'll read Wilner's blog in between rounds of golf. (next day) Rogers suit 2 - it checks out... I only listened for a couple of minutes but the Wilner guy is sharp, put the fans in their places and told them how it is. And I read a bit of his blog, had some slick statistical analysis. Cool stuff.
CHRIS Verified Member Posted September 10, 2014 Posted September 10, 2014 I'm not sure why everyone is giving Wilner a hard time with this. Obviously what he wrote can and has been better articulated by those with a stronger numerical background, but he posted his article knowing exactly who his audience is. I think the intent of his article was to get people thinking about a concept rather than arriving at a fact-based conclusion about said concept. Compared to his let's-multiply-everyone's-numbers-by-four piece at the quarter mark of the season, this article is pure gold.

You care too much for the weak and unfortunate.
