flafson Verified Member Posted March 12, 2014 Posted March 12, 2014 If i were him, i'd try to map out my chances of showcasing myself if it was a 1 year deal. Then i'd look at the other longer term deals and try to compare the risk/chance. For him, if he gets hurt on a 1 year deal, there is no way he's getting another long term deal, so all the risk is on himself. As soon as he saw there is more interest to his services, the more homework he has to do. Think about it this way, his agent was probably feeding him BS that he's going to get his 100 mil, so he agreed to wait months. Now he realize that he didn't get any offers because of his agent so he takes the matter to his own hands and all of a sudden there is a demand for his services. So he needs to test it like it was December and not March.

Frenchsoup Verified Member Posted March 12, 2014 Posted March 12, 2014 @JimBowdenESPNxm: Braves making legitimate run at Ervin Santana according to source That probably means 4 years at close to Ubaldo money, good for them
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted March 12, 2014 Posted March 12, 2014 That probably means 4 years at close to Ubaldo money, good for them I highly doubt that. Atlanta has many rotation options better than Santana. It just so happens that 3 are currently injured. I say they do something like 1/16 or 2/28
CHRIS Verified Member Posted March 12, 2014 Posted March 12, 2014 I'm not so concerned that Santana is trying to get the best deal financially, but more that he's running out of preparation time to start the season. Don't really want someone strolling in May 1st, but also don't want someone rushing to get ready and then getting hurt. I have no sympathy for rich players getting "screwed" by their agent.
The_DH Verified Member Posted March 12, 2014 Posted March 12, 2014 Nobody is saying his right to get the best deal should be revoked. Nor, I imagine, does anybody have a problem with a player/worker striving to achieve as much as possible. But f***, this is a dollar-hungry shitshow. Turns down a qualifying offer of $14m, which is decent AAV, knowing full well he has a draft pick attached to him. Then there's talk of $100m, limiting his market in a huge way. Then there's the one year deal and the 10p deadline. Then there's no deadline. Then there's Santana's reps getting in touch with everyone despite two solid offers matching his demand being on the table. All the while he's losing valuable conditioning and coaching time in spring training. I mean, at this point, surely any difference between the original QO and what he settles for will be negligible. When you have a multimillionaire like Santana scratching around for an extra few percent over the course of six months, well, what other term are you left with but 'greed'? It's not an appealing thing to see go down. Amen!!
jaysfan2014 Old-Timey Member Posted March 12, 2014 Posted March 12, 2014 Turns out Toronto and Baltimore were just pawns... David O'Brien @ajcbraves 3m #Braves will announce Ervin Santana signing this morning at Champion Stadium. Once Kris Medlen got hurt, Atlanta was the favorite..
TheHurl Site Manager Posted March 12, 2014 Posted March 12, 2014 This isn't one where I lay blame on AA. Despite us having 70% of the Dominican Republic GDP on our team, it truly appears that Santana wanted to pitch in the NL.

Although I do believe there's merit to him wanting to choose an NL team if he received equal offers, AA had 5 months to sign him before the Braves developed a need based on injuries. AA should have acted long ago AND he still could have outbid the Braves. Complete failure.

Despite us having 70% of the Dominican Republic GDP on our team, it truly appears that Santana wanted to pitch in the NL. How can you completely let him off the hook through? Santana isn't even that good so missing out on him specifically doesn't bug me, but Anthopoulos let him go unsigned until the Braves had a mid-March pitching crisis. If AA adds a few more dollars and incentives, maybe Santana signs before Medlen even gets hurt, when it's just Toronto and Baltimore in the fray waving around 1 year AL East deals. Who knows. AA waited for the price to drop on a pitcher. It did, for Santana. Then AA tried to wait him out again, by throwing up an offer (that other teams could assuredly match) and hoping Santana would come back to it for some reason. And he got f***ed.

If you've followed what I've been saying for well over a year now, I've been opposed to the Jays signing anyone to multi year deals (unless it was extending a player at a below market number). He's potentially eff'd the team over for a few years now, I preferred that he didn't pile s*** on top of that. He waited out for Santana to come down to a one year deal and offered him a deal.

Sorry yes, I will give him blame for this unusual refusal to add in incentives. Incentive based contracts are one of the few win win's out there. I'll take back that part, but in no way did I want to see Santana here for 4 years.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted March 12, 2014 Posted March 12, 2014 I have to admit I've probably stopped thinking about what's best for the Jays in 2014. I am validated in saying that there was only one out for the Jays after the previous off-season and that was to continue to spend at a huge increases (and there would still be uncertainties). I've began to look forward to the post AA/Beeston era and enjoy the Rays ride until then.

Laika Community Moderator Posted March 12, 2014 Posted March 12, 2014 Every front office in baseball is well aware of park and league factors. Hard for me to believe that anybody actually gets more money because they put up a better ERA in the NL. It's 2014.

KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted March 12, 2014 Posted March 12, 2014 One of my all-time faves ... top 3, actually ... right after MmmBop and this killer tune: I love you You love me We're a happy family With a great big hug And a kiss from me to you Won't you say you love me too Keepin' it gangsta I know you're being sarcastic but Mmmbop is a pretty well crafted pop song. I really love the counter-melody.
