Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted February 19, 2014 Posted February 19, 2014 Check stubhub. Prices for a Saturday game on Opening Weekend vs the Yankees starting at 19 bucks lol. A week ago they were starting at around 30$. No demand, tons of supply. Probably mostly people who hoped to cash in on the Jays making a big move. Now that it looks unlikely, they're all trying to bail. Not surprising it happens right after Jimenez signs somewhere else.
eastcoastjaysfan Old-Timey Member Posted February 19, 2014 Posted February 19, 2014 500's are face value at 14 bucks. Obviously if there's tons of seats still available (which there are for sat and sun) no one is going to buy 30$ 500's. Maybe 19 bucks if there aisle seats in a good row and in a good section. FV is only 14$ even with dynamic pricing vs the Yankees on the weekend? I remember searching around online last year at this time and prices were wayyy higher than what I'm seeing now.

Laika Community Moderator Posted February 20, 2014 Posted February 20, 2014 Guys, seriously. Ervin Santana blows. Ubaldo is a wiry lottery ticket with bad makeup and terrible mechanics. Garza is a ticking time bomb. They're all bad investments. It is what it is. AA f***ing goofed bigtime last offseason (for whatever reason, maybe it came from above), and no free agent fix was/is going to make things right. They'll live or die in the short term based on what they've already built, and they'll try to get back onto the "long term sustainable winning" horse in some fashion. I'd rather see Stroman, Hutch, and Drabek get hammered for 100 innings each, but stay healthy and develop and learn, than see Ervin f***ing Santana get paid 12.5 million bucks to serve up 40 dingers and chew Astroturf innings.

Great post. It's exactly what they should do. If it doesn't work, the jays have a tonne of assets at the trade deadline if they need to blow it up.

Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted February 20, 2014 Posted February 20, 2014 We all know Stroman is a special talent and will impress this spring, but if you think AA and Beeston will allow Stroman a well deserved spot in the rotation and start his MLB clock this year, you are sadly mistaken. Because roster management has really been a strong point of this FO.
Smedley Butler Verified Member Posted February 20, 2014 Posted February 20, 2014 With a little luck it might be possible to be in an even better place, in terms of talent under 24, than we were when they decided to abandon the rebuild, so long as they get decent returns on their guys over 27 by the deadline. This little detour might have gotten us out ahead, all things considered, than where we would have been had we stayed the course. Way too many variables to say for sure obviously, but it's not hard to imagine. We've got almost a dozen guys to unload, a good 4 or 5 of those being quite valuable. It could net quite the return.

I would've definitely, at the very least, signed Mark Ellis, a guy like Maholm or Capuano for SP depth, and traded one BP arm for a RHB with defensive utility that can platoon DH.

Amarista and/or Denorfia for Happ + Santos?

Yup, sign a Mark Ellis, or trade for someone like Ackeley or Espinosa would have been smart moves. Also, signing a guy like Capuano now would be a terrific bargain; or even a guy like Floyd or Baker earlier this offseason. Lastly, they failed getting a RHB who could platoon with Lind and someone who could play a position - Ruggiano would have been a perfect fit (can play all 3 outfield positions and has crushed lefties throughout his career).

Ya it's really the whole thing. They didn't get any pitchers. The best case scenario is they get Morrow/Dickey to be good and then have 3 serviceable pitchers. That's really the ceiling at this point. The Red Sox were supposed to be bad, but I didn't think so. They at least made some mediocre-good signings to patch some holes, can't say that for the Jays.

I hope you're right that they'll try to get back onto the "long term sustainable winning" path. They'll look even more stupid for going all in last off season, but if you make a mistake, it's important to admit it and try to correct the situation as much as possible. The thing is, AA has a penchant for sticking his foot in his mouth and this off season was no different, I'm referring to his comments of looking to add 2 maybe 3 starters via FA or trade. In order to get back on that path though, they'll have to move at least one of their good position players to get one or 2 young guys in return. A good first half by Rasmus could entice a team to give up something decent, just one example.

They at least made some mediocre-good signings to patch some holes, can't say that for the Jays. I think what several said about the Red Sox was that they had several injury concerns. Remember, Ortiz and Pedroia were injured in 2012 (I think), not to mention that Ortiz was 37 last year; Napoli had to rework his contract because of his hip; Victorino was believed to be in a big decline; Lackey missed the 2012 season (I think). So you add all this up and you get major question marks. All of the above could show up this season and not many would be surprised.
fireballW Verified Member Posted February 20, 2014 Posted February 20, 2014 I think it's surprising that they weren't able to accomplish this. An Ellis signing, maybe a moderate splurge on Infante, along with a back end SP and platoon partner for Lind, are all reasonable additions and should have represented the bare minimum amount of activity for the offseason, along with Navarro and Kratz. I personally would have went further and looked to package Sanchez up for 2-3 more wins, but even without doing that there was a middle road between standing pat and spending irresponsibly. What we've witnessed is ineffective management. Why would an aging middle infielder want to come play on turf? They really wouldn't if they had other reasonable offers. Not to mention there are a lot of patriotic Americans out there who wouldn't want to go to Canada to play. Maybe we could get some of these players with a big overpay but still not as easy as you guys think.
GeorgiaPeach Verified Member Posted February 20, 2014 Posted February 20, 2014 What pisses me off is not that we're not getting Santana - it's that AA blatantly lied to the fanbase to cover his ass. Good luck selling tickets this year, dumbass! I don't think any of Alex's trades/moves have ever been leaked, correct? And pretty close to always, when he has opened his mouth and even suggested he's targeting someone, we haven't signed anyone, correct? I think I'm gonna stick with this observation and not even get an inkling of hope up when Alex talks.
