connorp Old-Timey Member Posted January 28, 2014 Posted January 28, 2014 You're right, it's not like we have a huge sample of buyers and adding some more product is going to drive down the average price of a pitcher here. In this case, it comes down to specifics. There could be a team that will meet Ubaldo at price X whether or not AJ is on the market. OR, it could be that Ubaldo only has two suitors with money, and one of them will now end up signing AJ. In that case, AJ would knock down Ubaldo's value, essentially stripping away his bargaining power. So we are both potentially correct or incorrect. Suiters. Us Aztecs may not be able to keep up with the Ivy League crowd.. but we can f'n soundspell!! It's sui tore.. I was going to edit..f***er
Laika Community Moderator Posted January 28, 2014 Posted January 28, 2014 See I thought you just meant people wearing nice suits lining up to hand him contract offers. Suiters. No?
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted January 28, 2014 Posted January 28, 2014 Happ and Izzy could likely be dumped since they would be kicked off the 25 man with the signings. Yup, that would be 5.2 + 3.0. Romero could probably be talked into restructuring his contract. Thole can be traded if Kratz or Navarro can handle the knuckleball (1.25M) Say for Romero something like: 1. 5 year deal at 1M / year with 2M bonus if he's on the MLB roster for 50 days or 5M for 100+ days. (not 100% sure if this is allowed or not now) 2. Signing bonus of 2M / year over 10 years, starting in 2016. 3. An opt out (or retirement) claus exercisable at the conclusion of any year, but doing so reduces the remaining signing bonus to 1.5M / year. 4. If another team claims him off waivers, the signing bonus is converted into salary for the remaining years of the contract (ie, the Jays aren't on the hook for it) I know it's overly complicated, but just thinking out loud. Worse case for us, he gets 25M over the next 12 years rather than 16M over the next 2, but the hit per year would be small.
TwistedLogic Old-Timey Member Posted January 28, 2014 Posted January 28, 2014 Why did eastcoast, jfas, King and NJH "thank" every post on the first page? http://i.imgur.com/py2PxcN.gif I would be stoked if we signed him. He's the perfect fit for this team right now.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted January 28, 2014 Posted January 28, 2014 If true, Burnett has to be priority #2 after Drew. Getting both of these guys would actually make for an acceptable offseason. More than acceptable. And for once we won't be competing against the Yankees. Guaranteed Burnett would have zero interest in returning there and it's probably mutual.
Anemic0ffense Verified Member Posted January 28, 2014 Posted January 28, 2014 I'd love to have Burnett back here... He was enjoyable to watch pitch, and according to last years stats, he still has a lot to give... Man, there's just so much out there that AA could do... If they do absolutely nothing, I'm gonna f***ing rage

If they do absolutely nothing, I'm gonna f***ing rage I almost just made a "don't get your hopes up" thread for this reason Signing Burnett and Drew makes SO much sense that I worry, of course, that it won't happen. Please do it AA. There's almost no downside. Edited January 28, 2014 by G-Snarls
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted January 28, 2014 Posted January 28, 2014 Does Rogers really need to do the restructuring? His hit to the taxable payroll is his AAV no matter how the deal is structured. We aren't up against the luxury tax so that doesn't matter, so it's to help free up funds for this year and next year.
HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted January 28, 2014 Posted January 28, 2014 you guys are delusional if you think Burnett is gonna sign here. Chances are lower than Tanaka's.
DuckDuckGose Verified Member Posted January 29, 2014 Posted January 29, 2014 Dickey Burnett (unreal with Dickey effect) Jimenez Morrow Buehrle Reyes Bautista Rasmus Encarnacion Lind Lawrie Cabrera Drew Navarro Is a playoff-calibre team. If you were to replace Jimenez with a backend guy, like Cahill (who we would conceivably move a high leverage reliever and B- spec for), how would that team project?
jaysfan2014 Old-Timey Member Posted January 29, 2014 Posted January 29, 2014 We already tried Burnett here once. And he burned bridges with us by signing with the Yankees. He should really stick to being in the NL, as his AL numbers in Toronto and New York were not impressive, as his poor results were the reasons the Yankees dumped him onto Pittsburgh. Stick to Santana or Jimenez.

glory Old-Timey Member Posted January 29, 2014 Posted January 29, 2014 Burnett signed with Toronto in the first place because they offered the most years and money. Do that again (obviously not five years, but maybe two) and he may sign here again. I agree it is a long shot though. I'm guessing he will go to Baltimore.

AJ is looking for one year deal (Mariners, Texas, Angels or O's)
glory Old-Timey Member Posted January 29, 2014 Posted January 29, 2014 AJ is looking for one year deal (Mariners, Texas, Angels or O's) Then the Jays have no chance. All those teams provide either a better chance at winning or a better stadium to pitch in (or in some cases both). I guess if the Jays are offering something absurd, like $5M more than any other team, then they have a shot, but that's not going to happen.
havok24 Old-Timey Member Posted January 29, 2014 Posted January 29, 2014 Omg Burnett + Drew. Please happen.

I'd actually like if they brought Cahill in. Still young and could improve his walks. Groundball pitcher and an A+ sinker for the most part. He might be available too so let's start a rumor?

fireballW Verified Member Posted January 29, 2014 Posted January 29, 2014 That some people are getting excited about this shows just how out of touch with reality most of you ball experts are. As if Burnett will come back to Canada for a second time, especially after that Halladay/Burnett game. Good God! We would have to overpay by 5 million probably. Then we will have to listen to you geniuses whine about why AA didn't sign them because you live in a world of numbers instead of people. One of the only smart things I read in this whole thread is AJ playing another year might take one more team off the market of Ubaldo. Otherwise there isn't even a reason to have this thread because Burnett will definitely (and obviously) not be coming back to Toronto End note: Please don't be bothered to say how Burnett said he loved his time here. That opting out of his contract was a hard decision etc... Like really. 99% of players say that for obvious reasons. I don't even think he hated it here but he's not coming back.
BlueJayWay Verified Member Posted January 29, 2014 Posted January 29, 2014 Certainly I would take him on a 1 year deal. Heck, sign Jiminez at 3/39 while we're at it. Doubt Burnett really wants to come back here though.
saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted January 29, 2014 Posted January 29, 2014 Umm yeah ok. the jays fans booed him after he opted out of his contract and signed for the hated Yankees....pretty understandable.....the yankee fans booed burnett while he was playing for the Yankees...lol. If anything he might want to pitch in the AL for the opportunity to get back at the Yankees....but he would probably do so with the orioles if that was his mindset.
Olerud363 Old-Timey Member Posted January 29, 2014 Posted January 29, 2014 Burnett probably wont be returning to Toronto. He opted out because he wanted to go to a city that lived and breathed baseball, probably not an exact quote, but it was something along those lines. I believe he had 25 million on the table and opted out to get 80 million. They always make quotes like that. That being said he'll want to win at this point... so if he doesn't believe the Blue Jays can win that will be a big factor. But he's been here before and I think enjoyed himself OK. Might be a bit of an advantage.... if he'd never been here could be thinking Toronto is the arctic.
