G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted January 30, 2014 Posted January 30, 2014 Burnett to TB, Price traded for Edwin. No no no. I really don't see AA doing it. But damn Tampa would be a force with those two moves.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted January 30, 2014 Posted January 30, 2014 Seriously though, it feels like Burnett is the opportunity they've been waiting for all offseason. Guy is a legit front-rotation starter, and would be a perfect add even if he costs like 1/17. He'd be ideal He'd take a 1 year deal obviously which leaves room for the young guns and injury returnees to work up to the rotation in 2014 and 2015 nicely. And it leaves our trade chips (the few that we can realistically afford to part with) to address 2B. THIS IS THE ONE TO OVERPAY/OUTBID FOR
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted January 30, 2014 Posted January 30, 2014 I get the feeling that this will escalate quickly I say he signs with someone within a week

I think they are in a position where they didn't want to risk him accepting and then their hands being tied on doing other moves. Their rotation is pretty decent even without Burnett but they need a little bit more fire power in that lineup to advance further in the playoffs. When I'm back in the hometown my dad gets Root (which is Pitts sports channel) and I believe that's how they explained it.
Fearthedoc Verified Member Posted January 30, 2014 Posted January 30, 2014 It's actually incredibly impressive that AJ Burnett is 37 and had an average fastball velocity of 92.5 MPH last year.

Brenner Verified Member Posted January 30, 2014 Posted January 30, 2014 Considering a guy like Tanaka gets $20 mil/yr over 7, gotta think a team would be willing to go upwards to $20 mil/1 yr for Burnett? Honestly the risk is so much lower on a 1 year deal that they really should be willing to offer Burnett upwards of $25-30.

Brenner Verified Member Posted January 30, 2014 Posted January 30, 2014 No one is giving a 37 year old starter over 25M per year Not saying they will, just that logically it would make more sense to give Burnett 25m over 1 yr than Tanaka $140 mil over 7 yrs. If anything I would expect Burnett to be equal to if not better than Tanaka next year and the 1 yr deal limits the risk significantly.

I guess it's because any old vet good enough to command such a lofty AAV would probably be more focused on getting the longest deal possible. These old fogeys like Beltran really seem to treasure their two or three year end of career deals. Guaranteed jobs.

I guess from a teams perspective the long-term injury risk of a long-term deal is simply replaced with the short-term risk of a sharp decline in ability of a 1 yr deal for these old guys. Even so it seems teams favour taking the long-term risk when you look at what guys like Kuroda, and potential Burnett, get versus Tanaka. I would favour the short-term risk because the downside is so much lower and the long-term upside is mitigated by the fact that you are free to sign another guy each year.

CHRIS Verified Member Posted January 30, 2014 Posted January 30, 2014 This is the move they have to make, big money on a one-year deal. Basically gives the team an extra year to assess guys like Stroman, Hutch, Drabek, Nolin to see who takes a step forward. Give those guys another year and we may be able to determine that we don't have to play this BS free agency game next offseason. Probably makes too much sense for it to actually happen though.

I think the team that goes to 2 years will probably get him. Maybe 1 + (1 option) 2/30 I'd much prefer 1-2 years of Burnett than overpaying jiminez/santana AND losing a 2nd round pick.

kgm1 Verified Member Posted January 31, 2014 Posted January 31, 2014 Hurts us if he goes to Tampa or Baltimore MLB Radio said his goal was to pitch in the NL close to his home in Baltimore on a winning team . With those conditions I,m thinking Toronto isn't high on his list . I,m hoping the Nats anti up and grab him so the O,s don't get him .

kgm1 Verified Member Posted January 31, 2014 Posted January 31, 2014 +1 to Nats or even Phillies if that's true Hell he is a perfect fit for us but if we can't sign the guy then better he stays in the NL . I really don't mind hugely overpaying for a 1 year deal and if he wants I would offer him a deal that we would not qualify him in case he wants to pitch another year . I really think we need more than just 1 starter with all our holes but a 1 year deal without losing a draft pick and not gutting the farm is perfect for us.
