fatcowxlive Old-Timey Member Posted January 28, 2014 Posted January 28, 2014 Travis Sawchik @Sawchik_Trib 8m A.J. Burnett will return to pitch in '14, per source. Burnett will be open to pitching for a club other than the Pirates Travis Sawchik @Sawchik_Trib 5m Source on A.J. Burnett's decision to return: "I suspect he is going to open himself up to the market." If we're still going for it, might as well try to get him on board

NorthOf49 Old-Timey Member Posted January 28, 2014 Posted January 28, 2014 The Orioles are a perfect match. Let's hope Pittsburgh has been saving some $$ for this potential opportunity. Is there a draft pick attached to him? No.

G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted January 28, 2014 Posted January 28, 2014 For sure AA is in on this. Great guy on a 1 year deal.

Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted January 28, 2014 Posted January 28, 2014 And he instantly moves to the top of the list.
NorthOf49 Old-Timey Member Posted January 28, 2014 Posted January 28, 2014 Us too you know Sure, from an on-field perspective. But the Orioles have a big locational advantage. Burnett lives in Maryland (half-hour from Baltimore), and his wife is deathly afraid of flying. When he pitched for Toronto, the Blue Jays had to provide the Burnetts with a few round-trip limo rides a year to Maryland.

TBJ12 Verified Member Posted January 28, 2014 Posted January 28, 2014 Burnett probably wont be returning to Toronto. He opted out because he wanted to go to a city that lived and breathed baseball, probably not an exact quote, but it was something along those lines.

Or because he knew he would make bank if he opted out haha
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted January 28, 2014 Posted January 28, 2014 Dickey Burnett (unreal with Dickey effect) Jimenez Morrow Buehrle Reyes Bautista Rasmus Encarnacion Lind Lawrie Cabrera Drew Navarro Is a playoff-calibre team. Probably a stretch payroll wise (at least 35M and probably 40M). We MIGHT be able to free up 15ish without hurting the team. Man is that roster a pretty sight though.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted January 28, 2014 Posted January 28, 2014 Or because he knew he would make bank if he opted out haha Doesn't anyone remember? He opted out because he had so much fun playing Rock Band with Johnny Damon.
JaysAllMighty Old-Timey Member Posted January 28, 2014 Posted January 28, 2014 Burnett wants a WS ring, I'm sure the Jays will be on top of his list. Nothing like when he left Toronto.
Laika Community Moderator Posted January 28, 2014 Posted January 28, 2014 Not only is AJ Burnett a prime target, but his presence in the market depresses Ubaldo's value. Thanks for this news, everyone!

Laika Community Moderator Posted January 28, 2014 Posted January 28, 2014 Doubt it.. he's a one year deal for a small number of suiters most likely.. You were looking for "suitor", Ivy League...
connorp Old-Timey Member Posted January 28, 2014 Posted January 28, 2014 San Diego St.. party school.. they didn't teach us those things.. in honestly I knew that though..whether you believe or no.. blow me:)
connorp Old-Timey Member Posted January 28, 2014 Posted January 28, 2014 You were looking for "suitor", Ivy League... Also, in the world of stupid.. Dumb logic > grammatical errors
Laika Community Moderator Posted January 28, 2014 Posted January 28, 2014 Also, in the world of stupid.. Dumb logic > grammatical errors No dumb logic. A number of the teams in on Ubaldo will also be in on Burnett. That's all that matters. I'm not even sure why you would think my logic was off there. Just seems kind of weird, "one year deal for a small number of teams", exactly, a one year deal to one of the small number of teams still looking at FA pitching.
connorp Old-Timey Member Posted January 28, 2014 Posted January 28, 2014 Was just giving you some s*** back.. honestly I was going to edit that mistake but you caught it first.. Spanish sausage loving #$#%!! jokes.. but seriously.. I don't think it will depress his market.. we'll see though
connorp Old-Timey Member Posted January 28, 2014 Posted January 28, 2014 Constant demand. Supply goes up. Price must come down. Like with oil?
Laika Community Moderator Posted January 28, 2014 Posted January 28, 2014 I don't think it will depress his market.. we'll see though Well, not really. We won't see. Ubaldo will sign for whatever he signs for and we will never have any idea what he would have signed for had AJ quit baseball!
connorp Old-Timey Member Posted January 28, 2014 Posted January 28, 2014 In seriousness, like with oil//diamonds and whatever else.. the way that it works is you simply charge what the market can bare.. I don't see the SP FA market any different.. its not like a TON of teams have filled out their SP.. plus UJ may have higher upside than most not named Tanaka.. I just think its a situation where the teams just don't have the money to be blowing 5/80-5/90 on #2-3 SP like they have been.. and the teams that would spend stupid money like LAD, BOS, NY.. weren't in the market for these guys like Garza/UJ/RN etc

In this case, it comes down to specifics. There could be a team that will meet Ubaldo at price X whether or not AJ is on the market. OR, it could be that Ubaldo only has two suitors with money, and one of them will now end up signing AJ. In that case, AJ would knock down Ubaldo's value, essentially stripping away his bargaining power. So we are both potentially correct or incorrect. Suiters.
