I thought this was who you wanted?

He was pretty interesting at 27 but then it came out earlier today that he's potentially older than he's previously disclosed, a lot of teams blacklisted him (although that might've been a smokescreen) and this is also the 10th overall pick instead of the 27th pick.

The point as a fan is to have opinions and follow the sport of basketball

Why have an opinion about anyone the Blue Jays ever acquire? So what if Josh Johnson was an injury risk, the Jays scouted him. We watch the game and form opinions idk man

I'm with you there, but prospects are a whole different ballgame, in baseball and to a lesser extent also in basketball. I think calling Masai dumb as f*** is harsh, because these are players that we as fans have much less exposure to than NBA players of which we have tons of video and data for, and know how to interpret said data.

I think your analogy about Josh Johnson is not valid in this case. We had data of him for years, all throughout professional baseball, we knew his injury history, we knew the guys we were giving up.

Just my opinion, I don't think it's the same thing at all.

The announcers' made some reference to this guy being an Analytics darling. You would think that would make it a popular pick.

It was a lazy analogy because I've been out since ~pick 7, you're right that it was strong again callinghim that I'm just being lazy here. See below for my actual thoughts on it that i tried to be more eloquent about. I think it's different because there's a much smaller separation between NBA/NCAA and MLB/NCAA or HS, it's easier to form an opinion i think

He's a post up guy though. We drive our heads into the wall begging for JV post ups, now we need post ups for two?

I don't think Poeltl is a clear BPA but there's definitely a case, 100%. It's just, I know BPA is important, but in basketball I think you have to consider fit in a (maybe extreme) situation like this where we have a ball dominant front court and another similar centre who's already struggling to get post up possessions. The relative value doesn't feel that high here for me is all.

Raptors along with a gazillion other teams will never win a 'ship. Way the NBA is. Star-driven league.

don't know why there are so many raptor fans on twitter ripping them for picking "another euro big". Everyone loves JV...

There's always a bias against skilled bigs who don't have out of the world athleticism but just get it done. I like the pick, the analytics say he is extremely efficient and skills wise he has what you want in a big man, good hands and a good motor.

Seems like an especially lazy criticism given that he came through the NCAA.

I don't really follow NBA basketball. What's the general consensus on the raps draft? I watch the NCAA and i'm familiar with the guys the raps drafted....but have no idea if they were good picks/fit.

I can't believe the haul that OKC got for Ibaka you figure either Oladipo or the pick would have been pretty close on their own and they give up both. Crazy. Oladipo with Westbrook will be fun.

I'm not optimistic but I really hope we figure out how to use JV and Poeltl this year

Just caught up. Of all the players (all 11 of them) who averaged a double double this year, Siakam was the only one who averaged 20 ppg. Led D1 with 27 double doubles. Dunno what his efficiency is like and I haven't watched him but that's a hell of a nice start. Also rip Biyombo.

So what's next? All in on Horford? Does 2Pat still have a role on the team?

LOL. People are dumb as f*** still sore about Bargnani. It was his attitude, not his skill set that was the problem. I think this guy can fit in well with the team. I suppose if he progresses JV becomes trade bait at some point down the road.

I like the Poeltl pick.

It was hard to see them pass up on Labissiere and Davis at 27 - considering both were thought to go in the 9-15 range...Both have effort/focus questions, but at 27, it's a long shot anyway and I'd rather bet on talent. That said - a lot of teams passed on both and probably know a lot more than I do.

Go get Horford, let DD and Biz walk and trade PP and Ross for a SG.

Not being super educated on the NBA draft, that was my thought as well. The guy they drafted doesn't seem to me to have any kind of skillset you can't pick up on the cheap on the market. When you have the chance, why not shoot for the HR?

There's always guys late in the draft who are pegged as just energy guys and emerge as legit starting pieces, while these "high ceiling" players rot on the bench wasting cap space for 3 years and don't play a single good game for the franchise.

He did take a homerun pick in Bruno, this isnt a GM who always plays it safe

There's certainly some truth in this. Norman Powell is a pretty good, recent example. Hard working, meat and potatoes guy who may not have a massive ceiling - but can become a very solid rotation guy in the NBA.

Labissiere was that very raw, all upside pick. I kind of thought Davis was a lot further along though - but still with all kinds of upside. I guess time will tell. I was really hoping Brice Johnson would fall to the Raps. I think he's going to be a really good player.

Obviously I'm not one to just go with teams but if a good 80% of the league didn't think Skal and Davis were good picks I'm fine with not taking them, they definitely know something we don't.

"We’ve got a lot of names on the board and things to talk about,” Casey said. “Again, it’s very important to find players that fit. You can go play fantasy basketball if you want to, but do those players fit our program, fit our team, fit with Kyle Lowry, fit with DeMar DeRozan when he comes back, Patrick Patterson, the core guys we have coming back? That was the biggest thing we had going into last year. Bismack Biyombo and Cory Joseph fit perfectly with our culture, the chemistry of our team.”

To make that whole comment even worse, doesn't even mention JV. If demar comes back at 25+ million per year, tears seem inevitable.

It's not black and white, I'm mostly just pointing out the fact that people go on draftexpress or whatever site they use, read "high upside/high risk" and think that player is worth taking a chance on.
