G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted July 10, 2013 Posted July 10, 2013 So I imagine Lawrie is going to play through the MLB AS break with Buffalo and be activated right after the break. I wonder if they'd activate him against Baltimore? Probably not. Would make more sense to keep playing through the break for him, so no he won't be up for Baltimore.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted July 10, 2013 Posted July 10, 2013 He just hit a 2 run HR Could've used that in Cleveland tonight...

Daniel Labude Jays Centre Contributor Posted July 10, 2013 Posted July 10, 2013 Lawrie, Pillar, and Gose should all be up here after the All-Star break.

Normally...but over last year and part of this year Gose's numbers were way better in the majors. I think he is not hitting because he knows he should be in the majors.
Arkadium Verified Member Posted July 10, 2013 Posted July 10, 2013 He's hit .233/.313/.328 in the Majors. That's not very good. Gose will never be a full-time major leaguer, the guy just can't hit.
Pete_7 Verified Member Posted July 10, 2013 Posted July 10, 2013 Reports on Lawrie's defense at 2nd are positive, apparently he plays a deep second base.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted July 10, 2013 Posted July 10, 2013 milb.com: Brett Lawrie hit his first home run to put the Herd up 5-1 in the top of the sixth. Lawrie is on a rehab stint for the Blue Jays after injuring his ankle in May. He joined the Herd today after playing three games with Double-A New Hampshire and two with Single-A Dunedin and Lansing. The second baseman went 2-for-4 with three RBI's and a run scored on the night.

G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted July 10, 2013 Posted July 10, 2013 Hopefully, if Lawrie is being moved to 2B, it's because AA has a good plan for 3rd that we don't know about yet. Cause yeah, the in-house options are not appealing. I was intrigued by Bautista going to 3B but there are no signs of that happening and we may no longer have a legit starting outfielder in Anthony Gose. That means we need Bautista and his cannon in RF.
flafson Verified Member Posted July 10, 2013 Posted July 10, 2013 I guess they think it's easier to find 3B than 2B. Besides, even though Izturis doesn't have the range that Lawrie has at 3B, his defense is smarter and more mature so it's not a big down over Lawrie, at least for now. It's also pretty clear who they want to keep out of Derosa, Kawasaki, Bonifacio and Izturis, obviously he's the only one who can hit on some level of consistency.

I know a lot of people immediately cringe at the thought of EE at third. And that's fine but you have to look at it this way... how many runs would EE cost at third vs. Mr. X?? how many runs is EE above Mr. X on offense?? So this depends what the options are. Given the current options EE would probably be 30 to 40 runs better on offense. Is he going to cost that much on defense?? I suppose it's possible. He could be 20 runs below average vs. a real good defensive guy being 20 runs above. However before dismissing it out of hand it's good to play around with some numbers (yes they are only approximations but still helpful).

The team also needs to decide if they're keeping Adam Lind or not Even if they do, they have no DH if they move Edwin to 3rd Any way you slice it, you may need a new player. The question then is - can we acquire a good DH/1B, 2B or 3B. Who can we get via FA or trade and where do they fit. They will not stand pat on this infield, something is gonna change this off season.
Sparky12 Verified Member Posted July 10, 2013 Posted July 10, 2013 I really don't mind the Lawrie to 2b idea, only problem is that it fills a hole at 2b but creates one at 3b, unless there's a trade option in the works I really don't see the point
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted July 10, 2013 Posted July 10, 2013 The next time John Gibbons pencils Brett Lawrie into the lineup, the 23-year-old could be playing second base. The Toronto Blue Jays manager joined the Jeff Blair show on Sportsnet 590 the FAN Wednesday and said he’s intrigued by the possibility of playing Lawrie and Jose Reyes up the middle. “It’s been something we talked about off and on,” Gibbons told Blair. The manager explained that playing Lawrie at second base would allow the team to make the most of his range. “It was an option looking at the way the team stacked up and what the future might hold,” Gibbons said. If the Blue Jays do move Lawrie to second base, Maicer Izturis and Mark DeRosa would handle third base with occasional help from Edwin Encarnacion. That said, the Blue Jays may elect not to move Lawrie to second. “It’s just one thing we’re looking at. Right now there’s no guarantee it’s going to happen,” Gibbons said. Lawrie’s days at third base are not over, according to Gibbons. The infielder played second base in a rehabilitation game for the triple-A Buffalo Bisons Wednesday, a contest in which he also hit a home run. The Blue Jays placed him on the disabled list with a left ankle sprain on May 29. Gibbons said that he has been pleased with Izturis’ recent production at the hot corner, noting that he has “really settled it nicely over there.” http://www.sportsnet.ca/baseball/mlb/gibbons-jays-might-move-lawrie-to-second/
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted July 10, 2013 Posted July 10, 2013 Gibbons said that he has been pleased with Izturis’ recent production at the hot corner, noting that he has “really settled it nicely over there" - He is a passable fill-in at 3B but that's not good enough on a team that wants to make the playoffs next year. Izturis should be on the bench next year as backup to a legit all-around very good infield. He should not start in 150 games.
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted July 10, 2013 Posted July 10, 2013 It certainly does open up the offseason possibilities, I think that's the point. Now they know that they can acquire any guy who can hit and then worry about positional stuff afterwards. Profar + Olt for Joey + Boni Trade Reyes for Latos + C lol

IronLadle Verified Member Posted July 10, 2013 Posted July 10, 2013 what about Bautista at third? We have enough OF with Pillar, Gose and Sierra.
theblujay Verified Member Posted July 10, 2013 Posted July 10, 2013 We'll be lucky if even one of those guys has a single league-average season in the majors. Our team doesn't seem to mind having below league average players play everyday.
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted July 10, 2013 Posted July 10, 2013 what about Bautista at third? We have enough OF with Pillar, Gose and Sierra. Melky - garbage Rajai - 4th OF Pillar - 4th OF Gose - JMc in the OF Sierra - RH reliever Kalfus - far awy

Well they have Davis, Rasmus and Melky when he returns. We only need one of them fill in - hopefully they're better options than what we have at 2nd. Although Izturis has started to hit.
