ace3113 Verified Member Posted July 12, 2013 Posted July 12, 2013 Ummm... even though they can still use the pool towards those players, isn't the deadline now over for them as well? Jim Callis says undrafted high school players can sign at any point (before they go to school). They're not subject to the signing deadline. Having said that, I don't see any of them signing for only 500k. Maybe Ronnie Healy who doesn't seem very academically inclined.
Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted July 12, 2013 Posted July 12, 2013 I am exceptionally pleased that we got Brentz and Tellez for $1.55M combined... I was thinking that might have been the price tag for ONE of those guys.

Save Dtieb Verified Member Posted July 12, 2013 Posted July 12, 2013 This would be nice too. I wonder if he'll get back into 1st round consideration or fall to the comp round. I wouldn't mind taking him with our actual 2014 pick, even though he's not ranked in that range currently. Where is he ranked? I've seen some lists with him in the 20s. I remember seeing lists with Hollon in the top 10. Has he been dropping like him?
ace3113 Verified Member Posted July 12, 2013 Posted July 12, 2013 I'm going to save that list I think.... will be interesting if even 10 of those guys goes top 20. I'll post a more detailed one in a month or so, and again in the New Year probably. There's bound to be a few guys we haven't even heard of yet jump on the map like Bickford and Gray did this year.

Has he been dropping like him? I don't think he's dropped so much as other guys have just emerged, similar to what happened with Drew Ward last year. He also did not play in the PG National that just happened like a month ago. If he goes to more events like the All-American Classic and such and performs well, he could easily jump back to where he was ranked prior to this year.

If had to choose between Bickford or Morgan, I'd choose Morgan. So taking him with the 11th pick doesn't sound at all bad. Maybe a scenario of reaching for Morgan at 11 for underslot, and saving money for later picks like this year could be in the cards for next years draft as well.
Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted July 12, 2013 Posted July 12, 2013 Ummm... even though they can still use the pool towards those players, isn't the deadline now over for them as well? a) UFAs can sign at any point UFAs are not affected by any sort of pool... The Jays could be like "here's $10,000,000,000,000.00 for you, MR undrafted highschool guy!" and the MLB couldn't do anything about it.
flafson Verified Member Posted July 12, 2013 Posted July 12, 2013 That's not so good then. If everyone is bound by a pool then we have an advantage. If they don't, all our money we saved is lost.

Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted July 12, 2013 Posted July 12, 2013 I don't know for sure but I don't think that's true. This article is the only thing I could find online: http://riveraveblues.com/2012/08/yankees-sign-undrafted-free-agent-daniel-aldrich-74064/ On Yankees situation last year: "Regardless of the final amount, anything given to him in excess of $100k counts against this year’s draft pool. The Yankees had more than $400k in pool money left over after first rounder Ty Hensley signed a below-slot deal." This would make more sense. That makes virtually no sense... Isn't Undrafted Free Agent the same thing as "Free agent"? Unless there are some weird limits because of their age or highschool graduation status or something...
Caper Verified Member Posted July 12, 2013 Posted July 12, 2013 I feel like teams (and players) could exploit the system if undrafted free agents could sign for anything. Every top prospect would present themselves as unsignable so that they wouldn't get drafted. Maybe they would even withdraw from all competition until after the draft, and then showcase their talents to the highest bidder. There are a million rounds in a baseball draft... teams basically pick until they want to stop... if players tried to do that... they would all get drafted eventually anyway. Boras actually got a 17 year old to finish high school early one year. So he was eligible for the draft... but no one knew. So after the draft Boras declared him a free agent.
Caper Verified Member Posted July 12, 2013 Posted July 12, 2013 Clinton Hollon- 94th baseball America Rowdy Tellez- 64th baseball America Jake Brentz - 81 baseball America Did they draft anyone else in the top 100?
Save Dtieb Verified Member Posted July 13, 2013 Posted July 13, 2013 I now understand why teams throw picks on elite unsignable players in the later rounds. Basically to stop other teams from giving them what they want with no consequence. There HAS to be a rule where any undrafted player given more than $100K are subject to the pool. What's stopping the Jays from giving the top 10 UFA high schoolers $250K or more each? We all know they can afford it. Hell, I could have hired Garrett Custons for my ball team, if thats the going rate.

Save Dtieb Verified Member Posted July 13, 2013 Posted July 13, 2013 That is the rule. Anything over 100k counts against our pool. Makes perfect sense. So does any one know the rule on undrafted high schoolers? With 500K of pool money left, they could sign an entire team if they give 125K - 150K each.
Caper Verified Member Posted July 13, 2013 Posted July 13, 2013 Just a question, that was brought up on the Jays talk. Is next years comp pick 11 or 10? Considering we would have been 9 if Pittsburgh hadn't been given a comp pick this year. Is it for sure we pick 11?
ace3113 Verified Member Posted July 13, 2013 Posted July 13, 2013 So it looks like we have $597,360 left over + 100,000 (I think) to offer to one of those undrafted HS guys. Doubt they take it,but it never hurts to ask. Who knows, one of Ron Healy, Rob Ziegler, Tres Barrera, Keegan Thompson, Dom Taccolini, Jake Rogers, Max Knutson, or Brett Boswell might be happy with $697,360. It's still a lot of money and is pretty close to what Brentz got.
ace3113 Verified Member Posted July 13, 2013 Posted July 13, 2013 Just to compare draft class, who do you like better, Trenton Kemp or Meadows from this year? I don't know enough about Kemp yet, so I'll say Meadows for now. Longer track record, more polish. Here's an article about him written after the PG National Showcase. MINNEAPOLIS – A kid with the athleticism and strength of a mythological Greek hero, Trenton Kemp can do it all. This time last year Kemp was looking to pursue a future in football. Now he finds himself at the Perfect Game National Showcase at the Metrodome, staring down a career in professional baseball. With an unusual make up for a baseball player, Kemp can bench press 305 pounds, possesses a 38-inch vertical jump, and can run a 6.46-second 60-yard dash. Those numbers do make him sound like one heck of a football player, but this kid can swing a bat too. A PG scouting report noted: “Trenton Kemp (Clovis, CA) took the best batting practice of the night, showing very quick hands with a simple hand path to the ball. Kemp generated some very good bat speed with an his easy swing, driving the ball throughout his session with one ball landing over the left field fence. ”Not impressed yet? Well then it should be noted that this spring was Kemp’s first season on the diamond since his freshman year. “It’s an incredible story that he didn’t play, didn’t play, didn’t play, and now he’s co-MVP of the Tri-River Athletic Conference,” said Kemp’s father, Joe, who also happens to be Kemp’s coach at Buchanan High School. All Kemp wanted to do growing up was play football. Then he was hit with the injury bug in high school including a torn meniscus, a bone bruise that wouldn’t go away, and pulled hamstrings that kept him off the field for quite some time. Kemp started to swing again in January and his dad saw something special. After no baseball activity for 15 months, Kemp’s swing was already impressive. Kemp admits it wasn’t a step-right-in-and-hit-a-homer kind of comeback. “The first time back during BP it was hard to pick up the ball again,” said Kemp. His dad set him up on the tee to work out the kinks and that’s when he knew his son should stick to baseball. Kemp pulled off a feat equivalent to Paul Bunyan’s tales of strength. “He would hit over the center field hitting net off the tee at home plate,” said Kemp’s father. “That’s not normal. ”That’s when Joe, who played baseball at Arizona State and in the minor leagues, knew his son had to devote his time to baseball; no more football. “I said, ‘You’re gonna be playing baseball the rest of your life, why would you chance it in football?’ ”Trenton Kemp had been recognized for football on the national level before this event performing on high levels there as well. “He already went to the (U.S. Army) National Combine in San Antonio,” said Kemp's father. “In San Antonio he ran a 4.48-second (40-yard dash), he benched 185 pounds 23 times. He wasn’t overmatched in the football combine and I knew he wouldn’t be overmatched here. ”That’s all in the past now though and Kemp is here to get recognized and what he can do nationally on the baseball diamond. “It’s a great experience,” Kemp said. “I’ve never really been to an event like this before for baseball. ”Kemp has been very impressionable here at PG National, putting up great numbers in front of scouts of the collegiate and professional ranks. He had the opportunity to show off his power in last night’s Rawlings Home Run Challenge and started his day off today with a double down the third base line.“I’m just out here trying to make a name for myself and do everything I can,” said Kemp of his experience. "I knew what I had in January, so him being here right now is not a surprise to me,” added Kemp’s father. “I saw what he can do on the field and I told him, ‘As soon as you step on the field you’re gonna be a prospect just because of your size and strength and everything.' ”His father said a lot of Trenton’s athleticism is just a gift, but he works hard to turn that gift into something special on the baseball field. Kemp didn’t let his list of injuries keep him from pursuing his dream to be a professional athlete. Now it’s full steam ahead for Kemp as he focuses on his baseball career and put the injuries behind him. Five months off the disabled list, Kemp is off to a great start to make his dream a reality. And the Buchanan High School baseball coach finally got the player he wanted on his team for so long: his son.
TwistedLogic Old-Timey Member Posted July 13, 2013 Posted July 13, 2013 There is a very real possibility that the Jays will spend no more than $2m on the draft. That is after a year of bankrolling a scouting department and table of consiglieres. That is failure. And yet there's a day left till the signing deadline. I don't care if it's a real possibility, when it becomes real then you guys can bitch about it. -cough- Pretty much. Keith Law has tweeted that the Jays signing Brentz and Tellez wouldn't change his opinion on our draft as a whole being poor. Those two guys are okay, but they're not the type you blow off half your top ten picks over. Hollon also seems to have not profiled where he was taken. They're going to end up without any first-round or even consensus second-round talents. Tellez isn't a second round talent? http://i.imgur.com/Ya6K7Jl.gif
TwistedLogic Old-Timey Member Posted July 13, 2013 Posted July 13, 2013 Hard to argue with him aside from the Sanchez/Syndergaard draft. So you think last year's draft was a failure? Really? BA Rank 10: Stroman BA Rank 20: Davis BA Rank 24: Smoral BA Rank 36: Alford BA Rank 45: Gonzales BA Rank 86: DeJong BA Rank 101: Nay Some of you guys are just absolutely f***ing adorable, it's insane.
ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted July 13, 2013 Posted July 13, 2013 Some of us are just going through a period of bitterness towards AA because it turned out that he didn't see out the 5 year plan and traded away a bunch of the players we had become attached to. It's human nature, some of us feel betrayed. It doesn't matter if ownership didn't want to wait to year 5 to start seeing the system bear fruits, the GM is the one who takes the blame for our heartbreak.
TwistedLogic Old-Timey Member Posted July 13, 2013 Posted July 13, 2013 I found this quote interesting I wonder if they offered Hollon the absolute bare minimum thinking either they'll save money or get the 48 pick next year. I wonder if they did not expect Hollon to sign for so low given his commitment to Kentucky. I could totally believe that they tried to punt the Hollon pick, I was awestruck at how low of a bonus he got. Him deciding to sign though made it possible to sign the second guy between Brentz and Tellez so I'm happy it went down the way it did. It's considered a week college class compared to HS, but there are some intriguing arms like Nola and Hoffman who could be there. Newcomb's profile reminds me of David Purcey for some reason, which makes me weary. It's crazy that there are two guys from our 2011 draft class that are projected as possible top 10 picks in 2013, in Beede and Nola.

ReturnOfTheYeti Verified Member Posted July 13, 2013 Posted July 13, 2013 Just as a postscript on the Bickford situation. AA had in the past suggested that it shouldn't be assumed to be a $ issue. I don't know that we'll know the reason but one thing I found very interesting in the article on bluejays.com this morning is apparently teams do not have access to medical reports prior to the draft - which I find surprising, I'd have thought that it would have been important for a team to be able to take a look at medical records before the draft for reasons such as this - if it was some medical concerns that they did have (which is purely speculative).
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted July 13, 2013 Author Posted July 13, 2013 No, Tellez is not a consensus second-round talent. He certainly might be that type of talent, but there's no reason to just assume that he is. BA ranked him 59, MLB.com 99 and he was not in KLaw's top 100. I'm not an expert and haven't scouted him myself, but it seems to be a stretch to say that the industry considers him a definitive second-round talent. Is he athletic? - No can he play 3B or RF? - no 18 years old 1B isn't big deal...Sorry
ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted July 13, 2013 Posted July 13, 2013 At the end of the day, there will be busts all over the draft, so get over your disappointments. Time will tell, there could be HS guys drafted that develop better than players that were ranked higher at the time. Mike Trout was the 25th pick, Albert Pujols in the 13th round or something? We'll have to wait and see what happens.
