When the Jays don't sign a pick it lowers the draft budget, the 5% overage allowance is calculated based on the budget. Therefore the amount available from the 5% does rely on getting Bickford and Hollon signed. Right now $~$210k of the possible ~$320k overage is tied to Hollon and Bickford's budget space.

TBH if Ball got $2.75M I'd be pushing hard to get Bickford to for around the $2.25M-$2.6M Shipley, Crawford, McGuire and Smith signed for.

So 12 days left to sign Bickford, no news = bad news.

So if we don't sign our pick like Bickford, we can't use his slot money to pay for other draftees? I thought that plan was to not sign Bickford, get an extra pick next year, and use the money this year to buy high ceiling guys who slipped through the draft.

Next year is a deeper draft though (supposedly), so punting the pick to next year is just fine.

So the only way to "play" the system is take people higher than they should and sign him for lower and then have extra money for lower guys with high ceiling.

Then again, it doesn't really give you anything since it might make more sense to actually get the best guys and pay them slot value and be done with it, chances are the lower guys won't make it anyway.

But if you sign enough shittier players like after round 10 and sign them for a hot dog or $1K,

you can hopefully accumulate enough "extra" cash to go after really solid prospects that slid

down the draft because their demands were too great/injury/etc.

eg. Smoral from last year's draft.

You only get money for the first 10 rounds though and if you pay anyone from round 11+ more than 100k, it goes from your pool. So the only way you can pull it off is if you sign people from first 10 rounds to below slot value.

If it was possible to offer players up to 500k, they would be more likely to sign than go to college. Those that are already at college will probably sign because they know if at college they were drafted so low, it won't be any better next year.

The Rays have signed first-round pick Ryne Stanek for the full assigned pick value of $1,758,300, according to Jim Callis of Baseball America (on Twitter). The Rays, who have confirmed the signing via press release, received the No. 29 overall selection as compensation for the loss of B.J. Upton to the Braves in free agency. Stanek is advised by Jason Wood of Arland Sports.

 

Stanek entered the season as a potential Top 5 pick, but his stock fell due to inconsistency througout the year. Still, MLB.com's Jonathan Mayo ranked Stanek as the No. 12 prospect in this year's draft, while Baseball America and ESPN's Keith Law each had him ranked 13th. Stanek slipped well past his expectations, and many considered the Rays' selection of Stanek to be one of the best values in the first round.

 

Mayo writes that Stanek "has as much arm strength as anyone, throwing a plus fastball in the mid-90s while maintaining velocity throughout his starts." Law feels that Stanek's curveball is ahead of his slider, though BA notes that his slider "has real power in the 84-87 mph range when it's right."

 

So the Rays sign a guy who was projected to be a top 5 pick before the season, with the potential upside of a #1 or 2 starter, who throws in the upper 90s with a plus breaking ball, and a Boras client no less for only 1.7mm. While our first round pick, who wasn't even on the radar to start the year, got slightly over-drafted, has no breaking pitch, is asking for 3.9mm? WTF!

I didn't have Stanek as a 1st rounder by the time the draft hit. The velocity is electric and the breaking stuff is decent but, I hate his delivery and feel he will either be a reliever or hurt his entire career. Way happier with Bickford.

He is a all-around athlete that hits from both sides of the plate, won the batting title this year in D-1 for the West Coast Conference and has garnished several awards in college. 4 tool player (power still to come) with a great bat, great glove and speed, and an accurate strong arm (already has 4 outfield assists from right field!). Many of us who have seen him in Vancouver believe he is going to be with the Blue Jays soon. He looks confident and his approach to the plate (and how he runs to his position) is legit! Kalfus simply performs and impacts the game.

He's at the very least 4 years away from the MLB. And that would be the most optimistic time-line imaginable. Like, his mom is probably thinking "we'll be lucky if he's there in 6 years..."
