ace3113 Verified Member Posted June 15, 2013 Posted June 15, 2013 Unrelated to the Jays but Mark Appel signing below slot. http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2013/06/astros-agree-to-terms-with-mark-appel.html Nice for them. That gives them at least 1.2mm to spread around just from that pick alone. However looking at their draft list, they didn't really take anyone that would be a very difficult sign, even in the later rounds, and certainly no one I would want to give 1.2mm to. 10th-Austin Nicely, LHP 11th-Devonte German, RHP 35th-Kacy Clemens, RHP I guess they could spread the 1.2mm to both Nicely and German, or give it all to Clemens who I don't think is worth it.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted June 17, 2013 Posted June 17, 2013 Probably the best place to put this, here's a video of Rodon interviewing after kicking UNC's ass. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mAie81ETvaU

You're the number one pick. Drafted by an absolutely terrible team. And you sign for less than slot value???
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted June 17, 2013 Posted June 17, 2013 How did Houston manage that??? You're the number one pick. Drafted by an absolutely terrible team. And you sign for less than slot value??? With Boras as the advisor no less... It has to have been a pre draft deal. Maybe Houston offered both him and Gray the same money, and said whoever accepts is the number 1 pick. Whoever doesn't likely falls to third (3rd slot is less than that value). They might also have a handshake agreement that he's called up no later than a certain date to start his clock too.

And you sign for less than slot value??? guaranteeing that he starts his Major league clock next year. Why fight for $1M when being called up this year might mean you hit free agency earlier and potentially a super 2. If he asks for slot he probably drops again...Boras isn't stupid. Only thing that might stop Appel from being up by September is the 106 innings he already pitched this year.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted June 18, 2013 Posted June 18, 2013 You have leverage when drafted as a junior. You have none as a senior! withholding their pool is huge leverage. He didn't have to sign by July 15th. Positive they had a pre-draft deal though

StevieRay Verified Member Posted June 19, 2013 Posted June 19, 2013 I have a hunch that all these savings from round 3-10 would barely be enough for the extra amount bickford is demanding. With 2nd rd signing for full slot, I think we won't be getting either Brentz or Tellez. Just a hunch.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted June 19, 2013 Posted June 19, 2013 Please, please get Brentz. I would actually rather him over Bickford.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted June 19, 2013 Posted June 19, 2013 I don't care one bit if they sign Bickford, next year is a better draft. Lefty with plus velo + #10 in a weak draft > righty with plus velo

Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted June 19, 2013 Author Posted June 19, 2013 What hauuppens to seniors if they dont sign with the team that drafted them? Free agents bro. Jays signed about 6 players

o2cui2i Community Moderator Posted June 19, 2013 Posted June 19, 2013 what is the running list? it doesn't seem to have been posted in an updated version for a while. anyone keeping tabs so they can post the list as it stands today?? it would be good to see the list every time there is a change. thanks to anyone who can make it happen.
DuckDuckGose Verified Member Posted June 19, 2013 Posted June 19, 2013 Please, please get Brentz. I would actually rather him over Bickford. IMO Bickford will be independent of Brentz or Tellez (who seems like a pipe-dream at this point). Frazier got $3.5M, Shipley $2.25M, Smith $2.6M, McGuire $2.4M, Bickford should be somewhere in that range as well. If AA needs to save money for Bickford it will come from the few guys not yet signed. It's pretty clear AA is going over-slot after round 10, he isn't going to overpay Bickford and eat in to that pool. IMO Bickford will get inked around slot or he'll go to college for that reason.

A poster by the name of MjwW over at BlueBirdBanter has been keeping a running tab. DuckDuckGose Verified Member Posted June 19, 2013 Posted June 19, 2013 Bickford 3M, i guees I can see AA going ~100k-300k over slot. No way Bickford should get much more considering the advantages of having a top 10 pick in next years deep draft (talent + budget space).
