Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted June 21, 2013 Author Posted June 21, 2013 Brison Celek on health issue ending contract talks with Toronto: “When life throws you curveballs, you’ve got to hit them.” Brison Celek flew to the Toronto Blue Jays’ facility in Dunedin, Fla., on Sunday and prepared to begin the next stage of his life. Celek had just finished his fourth year at South Carolina, and third season as a member of the Gamecocks’ baseball team. Toronto drafted him in the 31st round, and he decided to skip his final year of eligibility and turn pro, partly because he wasn’t sure if he would ever have the chance to be drafted again, he said. But now, Celek said he will return to school and college baseball after all, because “an unforeseen health condition,” as he put it, came up Wednesday. The condition resulted in Toronto not signing Celek to a contract. Celek declined to specify the condition. “It’s not life threatening,” he said Thursday. “It’s not career threatening, either. The Blue Jays thought one thing and I thought the other, and we couldn’t come to terms on the deal.” As for his medical issue, Celek said, “It’s not embarrassing, (but) I don’t feel it necessary to have that out in the public.” Celek, a Bishop England High graduate who is a semester away from obtaining his USC degree, flew home to Charleston on Wednesday after things fell apart with the Blue Jays. He has already talked with coach Chad Holbrook and will be on the team next season. “He has informed me he is coming back,” Holbrook wrote in a text message. “I met with him (Thursday) morning.” Said Celek, who turns 23 years old in January: “(Holbrook) was pretty shocked to hear that we couldn’t come to terms, but also excited about having me back and just ready to be moving forward to next year. When life throws you curveballs, you’ve got to hit them. There’s much worse things than going from one baseball team to another baseball team. “It was kind of hard to take at first, but I’m looking forward to getting back to Columbia and moving on and working to get back to Omaha.” Now that first baseman LB Dantzler is gone – Toronto drafted him in the 14th round – and rising junior Kyle Martin is set to take over at first, Celek will be a leading contender for USC’s designated hitter job in 2014. He led the team with 24 starts at DH in 2013 but was replaced by Dantzler for the NCAA tournament because Holbrook played the sure-handed Martin at first. ,,,,,,,
ace3113 Verified Member Posted June 21, 2013 Posted June 21, 2013 From Keith Law chat. Grant (Wpg) Is the Jays' draft somewhat salvaged if they use some of their savings to sign Brentz? He has made some statements to the effect that "I hope we make a deal", so it might be possible. Klaw (1:50 PM) Possibly - although it concerns me that their two best guys would be the two best HS arms who didn't have an avg breaking ball (in this year's class). Is that a new inefficiency I'm not aware of?

Rays sing Milone. Ace, hold me I think I might just throw up. So the Jays take a bunch of players who are considered overdrafts (Bickford, Hollon, Murphy) and intend on paying them slot, close to slot, or even above slot. The Rays take guys who were said to have big price tags and sign them for reasonable bonuses? This just can't be real life. lol:rolleyes: Looking at their picks, the Rays had a ridiculously good draft. Ciuffo - 1.97 (slot) Stanek - ? Unroe - 1mm (only 72k above slot) Milone - 530k (slot) Wong - 393k (slot) That's good enough already, but then you add in a few below the radar sleepers: (12) Pat Blair - A Senior sign middle infielder from Wake Forest with a solid set of tools and a track record of performance. Here's the write-up I did for Blair last year: Pat Blair, SS, 5’10 180, R.R, Wake Forest, NCAA 37gp 155ab .323/.422/.445 2hr 22rbi 13(2b) 27bb 21so 13sb 2cs 9e 101a .943fld% A good defender in both the infield and outfield, Blair is a very underrated prospect among the shortstops in this class. A hardworking player, Blair plays above his raw tools which are already solid across the board. Always a solid-average hitter, he has made big strides overall with the bat this spring, by cutting down his strikeout rate from a career 18.5 per cent to 11.4 while improving his BA by 58 points from his career average. Blair’s power is mostly gap power, but he will hit an abundance of doubles, and can even turn on a pitch every now and then. Wake Forest’s leadoff hitter, Blair does a good job getting on base, and isn’t afraid to take a walk. Once on, he has the speed and instincts to steal bases at a high percentage. Plays for an excellent program against very good competition. The Maryland product modeled his game after Cal Ripken growing up and like number 8 plays the game right way. Will only be 20 at the draft. (17) Willie Calhoun - One of my sleeper picks for the draft. Small lefty second baseman, with a very nice hit tool, and surprising pop. Really good baseball player, scrappy. If they can get him to sign, I can see him being a Ray Durham type of player. If you look back on the draft thread, you'll see him on a bunch of my wish lists for later in the draft. Calhoun hit .433 with six home runs and 29 RBIs for the Panthers, who won a league championship and reached the section championship game before losing to Del Campo. Last summer, he participated in the Area Code Games and in a showcase at Yankee Stadium. It was during his tryout for the Area Code Games where his pro stock soared. (UFA) Not only that, but apparently the Rays also signed smallish but hard-throwing right-hander Clayton Crum (formerly of Howard) as an undrafted free agent. There are concerns with Crum's size and his injury history but his stuff is legit. I did a write up on him last year as well. Clayon Crum RHP 6`1 185, Howard, NCAA: (2012) 5-1(w-l) 1.74(era) 31(ip) 18(h) 17(bb) 33(so) Fastball 90-94mph with plus life. Little more projection, power arm, plus change, slider needs work. Only 20 on draft. Texas native. Looks like the rich get richer.

TwistedLogic Old-Timey Member Posted June 25, 2013 Posted June 25, 2013 (edited) Explaining the above post: - A Grey dollar amount next to a player's name is the recommended slot determined by Major League Baseball. - A Purple dollar amount next to a player's name is the amount of money he received for signing with the Toronto Blue Jays as a signing bonus. - $x,xxx, xxx : The player has signed, or is in the process of signing, while his signing bonus is not yet known. - ------------- : It has been confirmed that the player will not be signing with the Toronto Blue Jays. - As of what is known right now, the Jays have a remaining budget of $5,567,110 that they can use to sign the remaining picks in the first ten rounds (Bickford, Hollon, Boyd, Graveman, Girodo) - As of what is known right now, the Jays are $604,100 under budget and have an additional $319,890 overage allowance (a total of $923,990) that they can use to go after any player taken after the 10th round. TwistedLogic Old-Timey Member Posted June 25, 2013 Posted June 25, 2013 Hollon, Boyd and Girodo are all signing. Hollon is probably still discussing a dollar amount with the Blue Jays while Boyd and Girodo are waiting for their college seasons to finish before they sign. That gives the Jays 8 guys in the first 10 rounds, on par with the other three AL East teams. The only two guys in those rounds that nobody has heard anything about yet are Bickford and Graveman. Tewes has decided not to sign (the Jays were going to take him in the 4th round and he told them not to because he didn't feel confident in signing yet) while Celek was going to sign but an unknown health-related thing ended up scrapping the talks.

Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted June 25, 2013 Posted June 25, 2013 I've heard some Jays fans call him a white Prince Fielder, I gotta say, I can see why Looks Hispanic to me I'm gunna say the closest we've had to someone like him in recent memory would be Mike McDade, but Tellez is likely (hopefully?) better.

You better hope he's a ton better than McDade if we go through all that trouble to try and sign Tellez. By the way, Tellez has recently said that he'd be open to signing (of course that's if the Jays match his price, which could be over 1 mil. As it stands right now, I think they might have enough to get him).
