Not surprising, he was a decent hitter last year as well. People seemed to forget that after all that's gone on since last year's playoffs.

The AL wildcard race is bananas. KC won today, so....Cleveland, Baltimore, NY, KC all within 2.5 games of Tampa for that 2nd wild card. Texas lost today again, who is now only 1 in the loss column ahead of Tampa. So all told, you have Texas, Tampa, Baltimore, Cleveland, New York, and Kansas City within 4.5 games of each other for two spots.

Tampa continues their collapse. After erasing a 3-0 deficit to tie the game at 3-3, Fausto Carmona serves up a granny.

 

Rays, Yankees and Rangers all on the verge of potentially falling out of the wild card spots. That would be crazy. Those spots are there for the taking if Baltimore or Cleveland can get hot.

Phillies Sticking With Amaro As GM

The Phillies have already fired longtime manager Charlie Manuel and replaced him with Hall of Famer Ryne Sandberg on an interim basis, but team president and CEO David Montgomery told Matt Gelb of the Philadelphia Inquirer that they're not planning to part ways with general manager Ruben Amaro Jr.

 

When asked if there was any thought to replacing Amaro, Montgomery plainly voiced his confidence by stating, "Ruben is our general manager." Gelb asked Montgomery about Amaro's ability to turn the franchise around:

Is Charlie Manuel terrible and old? Yes. But it's Amaro's fault that the team is hopeless and beyond repair.

I hope his first move of the offseason is to make a trade for my namesake. That would be the craftiest 1-2 punch in the league. Instant World Series.

It is my dream as a Philly inhabitant to see a team run by someone who has a clue. I'm tired of arguing with my coworkers on how the Phillies are going to crash and burn

New York was leading 5-2 in the 8th, gave up a three run homer, but score in the ninth on a wild pitch and end up winning 6-5.

 

Second time in less than a week they win a game on a wild pitch.

Vladimir Guerrero Announces Retirement

All-time great slugger Vladimir Guerrero has decided to officially retire from the game, Hector Gomez of Dominican outlet Listin Diario recently reported (Spanish-language link). "I decided to announce my retirement due to my desire to spend more time with my family," said Guerrero (in Spanish), "as well as because of the two operations that I've had on my right knee."

 

Though we had heard recently that Guerrero would play independent league ball with the hope of returning to the bigs at age 38 and making a run at 500 career home runs, it appears he will settle for the 449 long balls he's already bagged. On the milestone, Guerrero said: "Lamentably, I couldn't do it. That was one of my principal goals." He last appeared in the majors with the Orioles in 2011. Then 36, Guerrero hit .290/.317/.416 in 590 plate appearances for the O's in what was his worst season as a regular.

 

Of course, Guerrero's career is not diminished because he fell short of his home run goal. His career triple-slash line stands at a remarkable .318/.379/.553 over 9,059 plate appearances. He swatted over 25 home runs twelve times, and hit over 30 in eight seasons. And he consistently hit for average as well, posting a batting average over .300 in thirteen of his fifteen full-time campaigns. Guerrero struck fear in baserunners and third-base coaches alike, ranging right field with a powerful right arm and recording double-digit assists for eight straight years in his prime. It is easy to forget, too, that a more youthful Guerrero notched 37 and 40 stolen bases in the 2001-2002 seasons, even if he was not terribly efficient in doing so. He was voted the American League MVP in 2004 -- it was probably not even his best season -- and finished amongst the top five three other times.

 

The long-time Expo and Angel great still stands atop the Montreal/Washington franchise's career list in total home runs. He also holds that franchise's record for OPS with a seemingly insurmountable .978 mark. What is most unforgettable, of course, was Vlad's uncanny ability to hit even the worst pitches for incredible power.

I'm just having fun with the Nats late season miracle run and the surging Indians chasing wild cards. The Tribe are only 1.5 games out and while the Nationals are 5 back with just 15 to go, them finishing off with a 13-2 streak wouldn't shock many with the way they are playing. Cinci players have to be looking over their shoulders.

 

Wouldn't it be crazy with all the Tampa, Baltimore, Yankees attention, if Cleveland stole that last playoff spot?
