The structure of his contract probably brings the return down a bit.. Either he comes back good this year and opts out with the team on the hook for another 4 million as part of the opt out. Or he is bad and opts in for 16 million.
Correct me if I am wrong, but doesn't a smaller portion of the revenues go to MLB players than in any of the leagues with caps?
I personally am against a cap as I think it won't do anything to help competitive balance. Players want to play in places like LA and New York and will take less money (and hence a smaller portion of the cap ) to play in those markets where they can make a ton of money off the field. The imbalance in state taxes would also be accentuated with a cap.
Looked at the info I had again and see the wording was other investigations are under way, no mention that they were all Guardians so I must have assumed that on my first read. Hector Gomez says there are other Guardians so that could be an indication there are not.
I got a chuckle out of Bryce Harper with his $300 million loudly spouting off to Manfred that the players are willing to lose a year of pay. I wonder if the guys who are pre-arb/back-end of the roster feel that way or are just too scared to speak up over his personality.
A bunch of players on one team could have some impact. Clase and Ortiz are not the only Guardians under investigation. More names are going to come out.
I'm not sure that trading to bolster things that are already their strength is the way to go. Sure the front office likes players exactly like Kwan, but I can't see him moving the dial that much nor being a top target for them.
