I think most people at this point expect to be disappointed, the surprise would be if we weren't. Maybe casuals will flip out, I don't know, but people here understand the reality is likely to be disappointing. But I think the time to decide on a concrete path is before the season.

I'm fine with most of what you've said, except Bregman, I don't want him. Sign Burnes or forget the whole thing in my mind. We need a front line arm at the front of the rotation. All these things are very unlikely to happen together, but at least there would be hope for next year if we really must.

I'm more confident about the goaltending than I've ever been with the current core. Lack of offence from the defence, particularly a RH shooting offensive defencemen has been an ongoing deficiency for them. Especially in the postseason, shots from the point that get through are vital. They still need to address that.

I'd bet Jets over everybody except Edmonton right now. Even betting Edmonton over them is irrational but I just have that much faith in McDavid. I might put Vegas ahead of them also, they play a proven playoff style.

Oh come on now, I'm actually an optimist with the Maple Leafs. I wouldn't have them in my top four or five favorites to win the cup, but they're in that second tier. If the goaltending stays healthy, they have a shot.

We already have back of the rotation guys. If we are capitulation to having a mid team I'd rather just blow it completely up. The middle of the pack is the absolute worst place to be and this team with additions like that given the needs we have would basically be the definition of mid. I guess if it's like a 1-year deal you can always flip him at the deadline if things go well, you could make that argument. But generally I think we need to pick a more concrete path.

We don't know what they would get back until we see what they would get back, but you got to do the best you can at this point, what's the alternative? The market rate for an extension seems to be something that they're not comfortable with, you can't just let him walk after the year and I feel waiting for the deadline is fraught with peril. There's no other path left to travel here. Merely prolonging the inevitable. -

This seems really easy to me, I don't know why this is so complicated, you have to trade him. That's the simple answer. Signing him to the kind of contract he's looking for is something they obviously are not going to do, nor should they do. Losing him for nothing is utterly ridiculous, that option cannot be entertained. Trading him at the deadline makes no sense because if they're in a wild card race it'll look horrible on the organization to trade him, but you can't lose him for nothing I don't care if they are in a wild card race. Thus, you have to trade him and it has to be this offseason. There's every chance you get more value out of the pieces you get back, especially for the money you will be saving. Same goes for Bo. I still think you can get more than pennies on the dollar for him, he had a consistent run of all star success outside of one injury plagued season. It seems even more certain that they're unlikely to sign him so trade him too. Pull off the f***ing Band-Aid already. -

There really wasn't much risk in either of those deals. Robbie Ray for a nothing prospect and a one-year prove-it contract. Only upside with those deals, very little downside.

People overplay all this stuff. They don't care. They care about weather to an extent, yes, but unless it's an active warzone, it's all the same to them. They live in safe places they get from place to place in their car, and only go to the ballpark or other largely nice, safe, higher end places in the community. Any regular city weirdness they encounter they shrug off like we all do. There's weirdness everywhere.

I'm not angry at Atkins for not signing them, I'm angry that they're waiting too long to make a decision one way or the other. Speaking of audacity, you have to be audacious as a GM and have the balls to pick a path on big decisions and go with it. It should not come down to their final year. Both of them should have been settled by now, and should be settled no later than opening day. It's like the mistake the Raptors made with Pascal Siakam last year.
