  1. I suspect most people will understand the nuisance of that claim. To be honest, I don't find it all that different then comparing stats from the 1920's to stats from the 2020's. - Ruth played in stadiums that didn't have outfield fences and in some cases, the outfield fences were held by spectators, who would MOVE THE FENCE depending on which team/player was up. - The accuracy of stats kept from like 1880 to say 1950 v. today is always in question. - # of games played changed. - Level and amount of competition changed dramatically. - The mound heights changed throughout the years. - Distance between bags just changed, no takeout slides, disengagement changes, ghost runners, etc. The reality is the goalposts have and continue to move all the time, which should be expected for a sport that's been around for 150+ years. Comparing stats always needs to be done with some knowledge of the game and a grain of salt. I don't think this is much different.
  2. We could get a look at him this year if they decide the Clement magic is gone - or we move on from Biggio - or there's an injury. He's an interesting piece.
  3. Because they weren't allowed to, solely due to the colour of their skin. You're going to need to get over this. People will learn the stats from those players/records are unique, but it will create good conversation on the atrocities of our past.
  4. Oh it sure is. But I like Olerud's posts for the most part. But LTBF is feeding the beast!
  5. FFS man - now Olerud is going to write a 783 page novel on why you're wrong.
  6. Apparently the Jays are interested in Ryan McMahon. https://www.thescore.com/mlb/news/2919829/report-blue-jays-among-teams-interested-in-rockies-mcmahon Atkins probably wants to triple down on building this team around defense only! What a dumbass.
  7. What's up with Julio this year? I believe he struggled to start last year too, but his power seems to be gone. Is the league finding holes?
  8. It's a shame he doesn't do the little things well. You look at a guy like Freddie Freeman - GREAT hitter! But what's so nice about Freeman is that he's seemingly always been a very good base runner despite below average speed and he plays a good 1st base defensively. Freeman elevates his game by doing the little things well and it's going to land him in the HOF one day. Vlad has the physical abilities to be a Freddie Freeman type player, but his lack of baseball IQ holds him back.
  9. Pretty pathetic. Swanson's dealt with his 4 year old son being hit by a car and seriously hurt this spring, then an elbow strain. We shouldn't be overly surprised he's struggled this year. Embarrassing to suggest the trade was poor after we got Swanson, KK and Macko for Teo and his salary last year. It was a slam dunk move overall.
  10. Have you even looked at other teams? The "leaked" Jays jerseys are far from the worst out there.
  11. Bassitt likes to throw the high cutter I believe.
  12. I throw that s*** in MLB The Show all the time - always works!
  13. I think the majority of baseball fans would prefer this. As Laika said, I'm just not so sure robo umps are going to help bring it back. I'm not 100% sure what will because the evidence is pretty clear that we've figured out how to get more and more pitchers throwing 96+ and their margin of error is significantly higher than it is for guys who throw 91.
  14. To be fair - you typically don't find long peak guy by playing it safe in the draft. You need to "swing for the fences" more, and obviously when you do that, you miss more often. Nimmala was a high upside draft pick at #20. I'd rather us target big upside guys than take some low upside polished college player who's going to get to the majors quick, but likely won't be an impact player. I like the process/decision making, even if he ultimately flops.
  15. CB Bucknor?
  16. So the strike zone will be called as per the rules of baseball? Sure there will be some strikes called that seem odd, but that's simply because we aren't used to it. Hitters and fans will both adjust and the game will be called as per the rulebook. That doesn't seem all that bad to me.
  17. Years and years of mediocrity I suspect - just like most MLB teams.
  18. I think it's a little late to be including Aaron Sanchez in the prospect's thread.
  19. That's all completely fine, but those questions can still be stupid and stupid questions can be called out.
  20. Wow - finally. Great day for baseball. Of course he's spent the last 2 weeks negotiating a financial settlement. The guy is a delusional POS. He will forever be known as the worst umpire to ever step on the diamond. When umpires miss calls these days, the kids all say "c'mon Angel".
  21. OK - you wanted them to find a home for some guys who previously had a pedigree - to see if something would stick. I have no problem with that. Joey Bart was DFA'd, but I believe he was traded before was put on waivers. I have to assume Pittsburgh thought they had to trade for him, as he wouldn't make it to them in the claims process. The Jays would have had to assume the same. He's out of options and I don't think he could have been sent down without clearing waivers, which was highly unlikely to happen (hence why Pittsburgh traded for him). Do we really want the Jays to trade for him and then roster Jansen, Kirk and Bart? Can you see why some might suggest that's not a great fit? You wanted Jo Adell. Could we have traded for Jo Adell and rostered him instead of Voggy? Sure. Is there anyway you would have traded for Adell and planned to play him regularly (instead of signing KK)? Absolutely not - not for a team trying to make the playoffs. A team like the Rockies could have done this, but not the Jays. Could Adell have sat on the roster to start the year and then worked his way into the lineup? Sure he could have, but that's a really difficult assignment for someone without much experience. You may recall Atkins did something like this quite recently with Bradley Zimmer - who was also a former top prospect, who was coming off a much more successful season than Adell has ever had. As you can see, the likelihood that type of move works out is quite low and often isn't something that playoff type teams do. Most on here completely ripped Atkins for adding Zimmer. Personally, I separate results for process and don't have a huge issue with that type of move, even knowing it fails 9 times out of 10. O'Neil? I mean sure, he was another risk/reward type player. I don't know if we could afford that type of risk as a starting LFer. There's probably an 80% chance (maybe higher?) he's an often injured 0.5-1 WAR, sub 100 wRC+ OFer like he's been every year except 2021. I wouldn't have had any issue adding him as a 4th OFer and swinging for the fences more. Guys like Profar? I mean they are looking for opportunity and there's a good chance they had no interest in coming here and at the end of the day, you can't just cherry pick the s*** that stuck to the wall without acknowledging the s*** the fall off. Every team tries to find s*** that sticks, but most fail (even a great org like LA can't make s*** like Kiki Hernandez stick). Amed Rosario Gio Urshela Kike Hernandez Nick Senzel Dom Smith Hunter Dozier Jesse Winker Austin Nola There are lists and lists of guys with a pedigree, or previous success that teams take flyers on every year. Even for the great orgs - most of them fall off the wall man. I don't try to pretend that GM's really know who has a bit of glue left on them. Could we have throw more s*** against the wall instead of keeping our incumbents (Biggio and Clement I guess)? Sure - we could have, but they have as much chance of sticking as the others. Biggio is a guy with pedigree who other teams would have thrown against the wall too. I can appreciate that things have failed and people will question moves - as Jim said, I think a little context helps. Pointing out the Jays could have traded for Joey Bart without acknowledging that would have meant carrying 3 catchers on the ML roster comes off a mindless drivel.
  22. Big Wilner supporter eh? Nice.
  23. It wasn't so long ago that LOTS of people were saying this about the Blue Jays offense - even back in 2015/16.
