  1. The Rangers are definitely the Jays best shot at a playoff spot. They are playing horribly, and the Jays play them 4 times at home in 2 weeks. I wouldn't count on the Astros choking down the stretch, and the Mariners are playing good ball. It's either the Jays or Rangers for WC3, IMO.
  2. I mean Grichuk kinda stinks, and has for a while, plus his numbers post trade have been awful. I’m glad the Jays passed.
  3. The Mets did the Jays a favor there. Nine more games until the TEX/TOR 4 game series in Toronto. With COL/OAK/KCR next, the Jays better go 7-2 at the minimum before that Rangers series.
  4. Agreed. I don’t trust players with low walk rates long term so I wouldn’t be upset if he left, but I think the Jays would extend him now if they could. Vlad not so much. I guess the good thing about extending the “window” past 2025 is that both Vlad and Bo (more so Vlad) are flawed enough that the Jays might be able to replace them adequately if they left. I mean if Ha Seong Kim is a FA around the time Bo is, then you could probably sign Kim for much less to replace Bo and see minimal value lost (for example).
  5. Morosi is a clickbait specialist so I doubt he’s basing that off anything except the voices in his head, but it’s something the Jays are probably discussing internally. I can’t imagine they want anything to do with a long term extension at this point and he loses value the less control he has. Now he’s actively hurting the team as an expensive replacement level player. Bichette seems like someone they legitimately want to extend long term but Bo wants to test free agency so they might be more willing to wait it out with him. Ultimately as long as Atkins is the GM I expect Vlad to be here but it’s probably not as crazy a scenario as it would have been a year ago to see him moved. He could be a 6 WAR player or a 1 WAR next season and neither scenario would be all that shocking. That’s a risky player to have as a “competitive window” starts getting close to the end.
  6. Kyle Gibson today against the White Sox: 4.1 IP, 9 H, 7 ER, 3 HR His numbers when not facing the Jays have to be ugly as s***.
  7. As bad as Vlad has been this season (and for 60% of his career, sadly), I wouldn’t trade two years of him for one year of Alonso. Just doesn’t make sense for the Jays. If you want to trade him for a rental then see if the Padres are moving Soto and try to work out a deal there (it would take more than Vlad). Otherwise either keep him or find a deal involving more controllable pieces. Hard to trade Vlad now since teams won’t give fair value. Maybe Preller or the Marlins would value Vlad enough not to lowball.
  8. My guess is they'll replace the hitting coaches and keep everyone else. I don't see Shapiro getting rid of Atkins after likely finishing with around 85-87 wins this season (although Bo's injury might drop that number) and winning 90+ games the prior 2 years, and I can't see Atkins firing his 2nd manager in 18 months, so Schneider is probably safe.

  10. Arte Moreno and the Angels org are a joke. Could have traded Ohtani for a haul, instead this happens. Insanity.
  11. DeJong sucks. He was a -1.0 WAR player in like 2 weeks. You can't keep throwing him out there hoping he corrects things when every win matters. He was depth but s***** depth, which the Jays don't need. Of course, that same logic applies to starting Espinal, but Schneider keeps playing him.
  12. I said at the time there was an argument to be made to trade any of the 3 catchers. Jansen had the fewest years of control, Kirk was a fat slob coming off a great season (2nd half power drop aside), and Moreno had six years of control + upside. The Jays likely preferred keeping the two “vets” and not take a chance on waiting for Moreno to pan out, or they just took what they felt was the best value. Probably both. In hindsight, the fact that Moreno is having a better 2023 than Kirk without the caveat of being incredibly out of shape and slow, it certainly appears that they chose the wrong catcher to trade, but as argued here many times, we don’t know what the offers for Kirk were. I fully expect Varsho to be a 3+ WAR player in CF next season so if he does that then the Jays got what they traded for regardless of how Moreno turns out. If Varsho was in CF in 2023 and there was a better bat in LF, then we might be looking at him differently. They just put him in LF and that put way too much pressure on his bat.
  13. They called him up and didn’t use him for a week on purpose. The Jays are so desperate they have no choice but to play him now. At least he’s on the field when they are still in the race.
  14. Teoscar has a 128 wRC+ in his last 313 PA (since June). He was bad in April and May, and horrendous in July, but great in June and August. Keeping his streakiness alive.
  15. The same logic to starting Schneider at 3B tonight applied a couple of weeks ago when they were trotting out Espinal at 3B and DeJong at SS while Schneider sat on the bench. They could easily have Espinal at 3B tonight, but it would be a bad decision to do so, much like it was before.
  16. I like how Schneider couldn’t play 3B a couple of weeks ago so they felt they needed the Espinal/DeJong left side of the infield but now that they are clinging for any hope they can find, suddenly Schneider is capable at third. This team.
  17. Yeah I’m not expecting the Jays to get in at this point, but I think their one potential saving grace is the Rangers tanking down the stretch. That four game series in Toronto in Sept will be huge. When they missed the playoffs in 2021 it was gut wrenching because you sensed that they had a legit chance to win it all. I honestly don’t know what to feel about the 2023 team if they get in.
  18. If Davis Schneider goes hitless today, he’s not playing again until next Saturday.
  19. Just rest a regular a few times a week so DS can get into the lineup. No reason why he can't play 4 times a week at a minimum. The fact that they started Espinal at 3B when Chapman was out rather than take the defensive hit by either playing DS there or someone else (Biggio, Merrifield, etc), so that DS can get into the lineup was ridiculous.
  20. Not watching the game but both the Davis Schneider highlights were with the stupid behind the batter camera angle. Thankfully the Jays are out of market for me so when I watch on MLBtv I use the opponent’s feed.
  21. He will be a 3+ WAR player in CF next season.
  22. Schneider going 3-3 with a HR, 2B, and BB, only to be benched tomorrow is going to be sad.
  23. It’s baffling. DS destroyed the minors and now in limited PA’s is destroying big league pitching, and he still can’t get playing time on a team that is desperate for offense. This FO isn’t bad, they do some things well, but having seen them in cases like this, Manoah, etc, they really seem to be behind many of the better run teams in the league.
  24. Schneider going to lead the team in home runs by the end of the season despite playing once a week.
  25. I'd want no part of Chapman on a big contract in his 30's. Let him leave as a FA. Ideally the Jays would use some of their AAA depth to fill 2024 holes, but a lot will depend on how they finish the season. If they make the playoffs, then job security is a bit more secure so they might be willing to take a risk on a younger talent, but if they miss the playoffs, then my guess is it will be vetrin central next season. The way they have used Davis Schneider so far doesn't give me much hope of them going the younger route next season so we should probably anticipate stopgaps regardless.
