  1. I think people can have rose colored glasses when it comes to Gibby, especially the 2015 version, but holy s*** he runs circles around the guys Atkins has hired. Montoyo and Schneider making the same mistakes over and over again is just unwatchable, and you can't put all the blame on them because they are likely just doing what the org wants. Spending $85m on the rotation and not letting them throw more than 85 pitches a start when things are going well is absurd.
  2. Berrios might need extra rest after today, 84 pitches has to be a season high for him. f*** JS.
  3. Aside from the fact that he was blocked by Vlad/Belt this season, Horowitz on July 1 was hitting .297/.419/.390 in AAA. For a 1B/DH, that wasn't good enough to call up on a team trying to contend. In July/Aug, he hit .394/.498/.644, so the power for whatever reason started to develop and he became a more interesting prospect. Now was probably the right time to call him up. I could definitely see Schneider and Horowitz replacing Merrifield and Belt next season. Maybe Orelvis has a chance at 3B too, but that's a lot of rookies for a team that will likely be very desperate to make the playoffs, so they might prefer the stopgap route.
  4. Good news is the Jays are behind both teams by 1.5 games now, and one of the teams is going to lose every night over the next 3 days, so there's a chance to make ground. The bad news is, the Jays are going to have to win their games, and even with the s***** competition that's not a certainty.
  5. Pen has to eat up 5 innings, which means at least 5-6 relievers used if JS goes with his usual pattern. Hopefully he brings in Francis and tries to get some length instead.
  6. Nice to see some prospects contributing in Aug/Sept.
  7. The balanced schedule likely saved a lot of jobs in Toronto. If this were the unbalanced schedule days, it would have been ugly.
  8. Yeah I think Rogers is probably happy with the current set up. The Jays don't need to make the playoffs every season, they just need to be competitive more years than not and attendance/revenue should be good. The fans are likely more frustrated with this season than ownership is. Being competitive every year means that the years you miss the playoffs are going to be in the 85-89 win territory. That's where the Jays likely finish this season. Whether it leads to a playoff spot remains to be seen, but I doubt missing the playoffs leads to any massive changes aside from Guillermo being scapegoated (which will probably happen anyway).
  9. If Jimi has another option based on appearances next season, then we're f***ed. He'll be here forever.
  10. Nice Kirk! Not predictable at all.
  11. Runner on 1st, less than 2 out, Kirk up. Seems predictable.
  12. When you take your starter out at 70 something pitches and intentionally plan to rely on 5 relievers to end the game, this always has a chance of happening.
  13. JS going to bust a nut by the end of the night with the amount of rested relievers he can use tonight.
  14. Getting shut down by Flexen would be a new low even for this offense.
  15. They were *this* close to being stuck with a massive Carlos Correa contract as well. What a dumpster fire. Eppler stinks.
  16. The Rangers are definitely the Jays best shot at a playoff spot. They are playing horribly, and the Jays play them 4 times at home in 2 weeks. I wouldn't count on the Astros choking down the stretch, and the Mariners are playing good ball. It's either the Jays or Rangers for WC3, IMO.
  17. I mean Grichuk kinda stinks, and has for a while, plus his numbers post trade have been awful. I’m glad the Jays passed.
  18. The Mets did the Jays a favor there. Nine more games until the TEX/TOR 4 game series in Toronto. With COL/OAK/KCR next, the Jays better go 7-2 at the minimum before that Rangers series.
  19. Agreed. I don’t trust players with low walk rates long term so I wouldn’t be upset if he left, but I think the Jays would extend him now if they could. Vlad not so much. I guess the good thing about extending the “window” past 2025 is that both Vlad and Bo (more so Vlad) are flawed enough that the Jays might be able to replace them adequately if they left. I mean if Ha Seong Kim is a FA around the time Bo is, then you could probably sign Kim for much less to replace Bo and see minimal value lost (for example).
  20. Morosi is a clickbait specialist so I doubt he’s basing that off anything except the voices in his head, but it’s something the Jays are probably discussing internally. I can’t imagine they want anything to do with a long term extension at this point and he loses value the less control he has. Now he’s actively hurting the team as an expensive replacement level player. Bichette seems like someone they legitimately want to extend long term but Bo wants to test free agency so they might be more willing to wait it out with him. Ultimately as long as Atkins is the GM I expect Vlad to be here but it’s probably not as crazy a scenario as it would have been a year ago to see him moved. He could be a 6 WAR player or a 1 WAR next season and neither scenario would be all that shocking. That’s a risky player to have as a “competitive window” starts getting close to the end.
  21. Kyle Gibson today against the White Sox: 4.1 IP, 9 H, 7 ER, 3 HR His numbers when not facing the Jays have to be ugly as s***.
  22. As bad as Vlad has been this season (and for 60% of his career, sadly), I wouldn’t trade two years of him for one year of Alonso. Just doesn’t make sense for the Jays. If you want to trade him for a rental then see if the Padres are moving Soto and try to work out a deal there (it would take more than Vlad). Otherwise either keep him or find a deal involving more controllable pieces. Hard to trade Vlad now since teams won’t give fair value. Maybe Preller or the Marlins would value Vlad enough not to lowball.
  23. My guess is they'll replace the hitting coaches and keep everyone else. I don't see Shapiro getting rid of Atkins after likely finishing with around 85-87 wins this season (although Bo's injury might drop that number) and winning 90+ games the prior 2 years, and I can't see Atkins firing his 2nd manager in 18 months, so Schneider is probably safe.
