Players get type cast as defensemen very early in their hockey careers, and stereotyping, stubbornness, and hockey tradition largely prevents position changes. But forwards are just better at hockey, generally. Faster, better with the puck, better at scoring and creating offense and driving shot chances - these are the reasons that they get put up front in the first place, way back when they are wee little lads. Progressive teams could benefit by drafting less unskilled defensemen and converting some skilled forwards to the blue line.

Cheap as f*** option - Kelly Johnson. Can throw him at 2B, 3B, LF, RF, and 1B. Maybe even platoon a bit with Colabello or Travis depending on what happens. -
Gimme Torey Krug if we're playing 3 on 3! Reilly would be good at it though. Hedman, Chara, Ekblad candidates. If it's fan votes you might see Markov.

I guess they'll probably be forced to have 3 Dmen on each team. If I'm making an ideal 3 on 3 team it wouldn't have any defensemen, obviously.

I love what the NHL is doing with the All Star game this year. Four teams of two goalies and nine skaters will be selected. One for each division. The boring 60 minute game of 5 on 5 pond hockey is replaced by a little tournament of 20 minute 3 on 3 games. The winning team also splits a $1M purse, so there is some incentive. Should be kind of cool.

Yeah but that's a pretty specific time from which to judge his value. You've only got so many contending teams looking to add a non-impact OF. His offseason market should be much bigger

I would understand this if trades were illegal and Toronto's decision was to keep 2 and cut 1 of Revere, Pompey, Saunders. But how can he possibly be a non-tender candidate? Some team out there would want him, even if it's just for a PTBNL.

You're correct that it's relatively easy to find good relievers. It's hard to find truly elite relievers though. And O'Day is absolutely elite. Since 2009, his RA9-WAR is 2nd in baseball behind only Kimbrel. Since 2012, he's #3 behind Kimbrel and Chapman. The guy is a beast!

Perfect. I anticipate the flood of offers. If anyone has a C to dangle, I'd love to move Santana for him. Even if the talent doesn't line up exactly, I can accept a good prospect or add Ubaldo/Anderson to close any value gaps. I'll also consider trading him for sexy prospects.
