Castro, the flame-thrower who pushes the gun at 100 m.p.h., was locked in by Ismael Cruz. GM Alex Anthopoulos got an eye-opening look at the spindly six-foot-five right-hander last year when he played at Class-A Vancouver, and initially thought the radar gun was stuck because it kept flashing 98 miles per hour on his fastball. At the time Anthopoulos joked to Cruz: “You just paid your salary for the next 10 years because that’s a great sign.” Last week, Anthopoulos amended it that to “the next 20 years”.
For some reason, Castro doesn’t want to divulge details of how he caught Cruz’s eye, playing in a Dominican baseball program. “He used to be with the Mets. When he went to Toronto, that’s when he signed me up.”
Read between the lines: Cruz hid Castro, his tiffany prospect, until he could deliver the kid to Toronto.

When Jays scout Ismael Cruz discovered him in the Dominican Republic, Castro was had for only $43,000 (U.S.).
