I don't necessarily disagree, but the problem is that its a terrible year to be dipping into the SP market. Skubal would obviously be great, but if you can't sign him who do you throw money at?

- Trevor Rogers is probably the second best guy, but hasn't been healthy or consistent and is probably getting 100-150M

- Next tier is a bunch of probable league average guys: Michael King, Freddy Peralta, Shota Imanaga, Clay Holmes, maybe Kaima Taira.

The more I think about it, the more I think Adrian Morejon migth move the needle more than any non-Skubal SP. He's been worth 2-3 WAR and 3+ WPA the last couple of years and he's the kind of guy you can rely on in a playoff series. I might prefer him and someone like Soroka, Woodruff, or Boyd on a short-term deal than go 3+ years on one of the mediocre SPs after Skubal.

That said, I could see this team thinking they could get bankable production from someone like Peralta, Rogers, or King and I trust them to make that call.

Yeah I'm starting to come around on the idea of Morejon with the intention of starting him. It's a gamble given that he's been a reliever the past few years but he might be the best combination of age, upside, and value on the pitching side. Comes with a QO though, which shouldn't deter a team, but has to be factored in.

If the Jays can get Sonny Gray for 3/60M I would pull that trigger.    He will give a ton of quality starts and eat innings.  Cease, Soriano and Gray in a three game series gives me the fizz.

Sonny is entering his age 37 season.  I saw him predicted to sign a 1 year $25M deal, which seems about right.  I can see him getting a 2 year deal, but I doubt he gets 3.

Am I the only one who thinks we need to trade Vladdy and do a small rebuild with a hard cap coming and this team having a bottom 5 farm?

Lots of teams would line up to trade for an underachieving 1B with 14 years and 480 million left on his deal, so yeah, you're definitely on to something there.

Well when you put it like that, it sounds like we're stuck with him forever :(  lol

Apparently Sato has a 95th percentile sprint speed at 29.5ft/s in the NPB so him being able to play the OF has some appeal. Though his complete package does have some warts.

There’s some thoughts in podcast land that the Jays may avoid signing any QO player and go hard on a Japanese pitcher, Sato, Arraez and a RHH OF to platoon with Barger.

Yankees didn't extend a QO to Jazz.

I thought that came as a surprise as I believe they would been very likely to receive draft pick compensation if Chisolm were to leave. I suspect he offers enough upside that a qualifying offer wouldn't have been a major impediment to his market.

Any predictions?

1. Jays trade for Kwan to play CF/LF as insurance on Bateman

2. Jays trade for CJ Abrams and move him to 2B

3. Jays bring back Gausman

4. Jays sign Gregory Soto & Bryan Abreu (stacked bullpen)

5. Jays sign SP Kaima Taira

Bryan Abreu would be a really nice pickup. Gives you another high-leverage arm for the 7th/8th inning with legit swing-and-miss stuff and 100+ K upside.

Would be a very solid replacement for Jeff Hoffman.

Yeah I don't know what happened to him last year, but he's been dominant in previous years and could be a nice bounce back candidate. Seems like a solid target if they've identified what was wrong last year.

Their interest in him probably depends on how they plan to use Spencer Miles.

That seems kind of crazy. He's Fangraphs #7 FA and they projected a 4 year, $92M dollar deal for him.

He must be insufferable to be around. But who cares I say we sign him anyway. The team lost their right to preserve the power of friendship last year with poor play. We need talent.

We are. At this point you just hope he turns it around back to at least his career norms if not better.

I'm not sure if the Jays would avoid any qualified FA's (essentially, Seiya Suzuki). I wouldn't be against it necessarily if their plan is to start prioritizing building the farm back up and figure out how to balance competing with adding to the system, but the distance in impact between Suzuki and the next best non-qualified position player is probably significant. The Jays want the gravy train (attendance) to keep rolling, and Suzuki is their best shot on the offensive side to make a meaningful difference. I don't think they pass that up to save draft 2 picks, although who the heck knows what the 2027 draft will even look like with the CBA uncertainty.

Now, if they are bullish on Sato, then maybe that changes the equation. The only other qualified FA that I think they'd be interested in is Morejon and possibly Randy. I'd be fine with Morejon, but Randy would scare me a bit.

I get the feeling that Suzuki will be a primary target for the front office. It does hurt a bit to lose draft picks when picking so high so I could see how it could be tempting to look to the Japanese market as an alternative. I believe that the fact the Yankees declined to qualify Chisolm makes him a more attractive target but I don't have a good feel for whether the club would be willing to take a chance on this player or not. I don't recall hearing a lot about disputes or clubhouse drama with Chisolm in New York but he does seem like the type of overconfident player that could get under people's skin.

If the Jays are going to get a reliever, I'd want a LHP...

Morejon
Vesia
Minter
Or old man Raley would be my targets.

I doubt we'd have the money for Morejon, after finding positional bats and an SP, so one of the latter group would be nice.

Highly recommend dicking around on this, very fun

this was a lot of fun to kill an hour before football started. here's where I landed:

  • I don't see them spending big with how much money they've committed in recent offseasons, especially with the cba uncertainty
  • they need a backup plan in CF & the options are pretty dire. robert is maybe the only competent CF defender available that isn't a complete wet noodle. worth the risk despite the obvious risks attached
  • drohan & ramirez are expendable to their current teams because of their depth.
    • tiedemann isn't the type of arm the cubs usually go after, but he has pedigree & gives them controllable pitching. lukes fits as an ian-happ type guy at a lower cost (especially if they plan on spending big on pitching). ramirez is a classic blue-jays type guy: positional versatility, lots of contact w/ lift and pull.
    • drohan is the odd man out with priester coming back and the brewers' cavalcade of young pitching. the brewers get back a hard throwing reliever & an offensively inclined catcher they can work their magic with.
  • puk and ginkel get a ton of whiffs & have experience pitching in high leverage (puk may start the season on the IL, but the jays have done this type of deal before)

Oh I love a lot of that sliderguy.  Fantastic insight.  Love the Puk idea and I like the trade targets.

Can I take this + one relatively large signing?  Like give me Bauers to DH on a 3 year $55M as the cherry on top?  Or maybe a Sato.  That would be fun.
