Can we get rid of smith yet or is he js little tank machine

It's completely irrational I know, but I genuinely hate Smith already. Just dfa immediately.

Also, as great as Straw did with the throw in the 11th, his at-bat in the 9th was horrific.

This offense is just hysterically bad.

Well...that's the season. Thanks BV.

Yeah. This feels like the final gut punch. By the time we're done the next killer stretch of the schedule. We'll be way out of it.

This game was symbolic of the way a losing team manages to lose and a winning team manages to win.

I wouldn't have trusted Smith to advance the runner by swinging away, he sucks big time. Should have bunted the runner over, even though it goes against the book when you're on the road.

How many scrubs can our GM compile man... shows the state of our farm system that we need to roster this scrub

Came a strike away from beating arguably the hottest team in the league right now, while being terrible with RISP…. Idk just wasn’t meant to be. Such a dumb way to lose though

Gotta give it to Atkins... it takes a lot of skill to have a 300M payroll with this pile of turd as our offensive lineup...

Can understand this feeling of course, but it's not Atkins' fault that Springer and Kirk have been mostly awful, that Vlad has inexplicably been a complete disgrace, that Santander has missed yet another full season, that Varsho was also atrocious until we traded him.

Where Atkins really does deserve criticism is not getting one more bat in that we clearly needed. But so much of this dumpster fire is on players who should really have been way, way better than they have been. We already had a roster (Bichette aside) that came within two outs of the world series, and we added a potential Cy Young winner, possibly a 30HR bat and an elite setup man. It really shouldn't be this bad, and the fact that it is, is at least 80% on the players.

I agree mostly and would add that not having the "sustainable pipeline" that they shoved down our throats has been non-existent.  We just havent gotten enough from the farm system to help our major league team. The only reason we've made it this far is because we've become a top 5 payroll team consistently to plug in many holes.

Also, injuries were a valid excuse at the very start, not so much anymore.  Look around baseball, many teams are suffering the same, if not worse, injury luck than us right now and they're still staying afloat.

Yep, due to the lack of development, the Jays have to seek players through either FA market or trades which increases their payroll.

A lot of what you say is fair, but I do think the injuries have been pretty insane in total. Just because there haven't been as many new ones lately, doesn't mean it's been a normal season. It may not be why we suck so bad now, but it has screwed up the season.

We've had zero contribution whatsoever from Santander and Barger, who could've reasonably been expected to combine for at least 40-45HRs if healthy. Kirk broke his thumb, which is one of the worst injuries a catcher can get, and it's only now he looks like he isn't totally awful both with the glove and bat. We had what looked like an 8 man rotation and ridiculous starting pitcher depth in Spring Training, and we still ended up scrambling around getting Patrick Corbin in when basically all of our starters got injured. Other stuff like Yimi Garcia was more predictable I guess, but I do think we've had it go as badly as it possibly could have with injuries, and I don't think any team could've coped with what we've had all that much better than us.

I don't want to be the one defending Atkins necessarily - I don't have any emotional need to defend him and you're definitely right about the lack of pipeline. But I do think this season needs to be acknowledged as a crazy one. Just so many abnormal things have made it go worse than anyone's most pessimistic expectations.

Sounds eerily similar to the way last year ended…

So everyone is ready to start hating on Varland now right? Disgraceful performance by him today after such a well-played game. Thanks for nothing!

Imagine giving up a game-tying homer in the 9th to a washed over-the-hill bum.

I had the same thought going into the 9th inning - somehow I felt very similar to Game 7 and it played out almost the exact same way.

Except that we're awful now and I dislike pretty much all of them, not just Jeff Hoffman.

Guys who have performed as one of the league best all year typically get passes.  The piss poor offense however... shun them all!!

1 for 19 with RISP

Well done fellas. Well done

How did we get here?

This is insane and this isn't 2024.  2024 was a league average offense.  I think... I mean maybe I am going crazy but OPS+ was 98.  OPS was exactly at league average.   This year it is 85.  Last in everything.

This offense is just dangerous to the bullpen.  The good relievers over-worked because every game is close, no blow-outs.  Worst I've ever seen perhaps tied with 97.

How is this season even possible?  Like just getting kicked in the nuts again and again.

If you don’t like it, then you don’t like the Jays. Always either a great offense or great pitching, but never both. Last year was the 1 year where both clicked at the same time.

Caught the last few innings on the radio and I still don't know what happened at the end, terrible game calling

The run differential last year was about the same as 2022 and 2023.    There have been many years where offense and pitching were both above average.

This year on pace to score the fewest runs outside of the first four years.  1977 to 1980.

That was before my time.  Almost none of us have experienced an offense like this.   I haven't.  I don't know what this is.

This team will need to make Lukes a 4th OFer/platoon at CF and make one of Gimenez/Clement a backup SS/2B.  Santandar will replace Springer at DH.

Not sure if this front office can get 2 big bats in the offseason as the list of free agents isnt great + our crappy farm system but thats what will be required.  No team will ever have clean health.
