What happens if Fatso 1st baseman is like this next year ? Do the Jays just swallow the contract and field a better player ?

Vladdy for Tatis Jr would be a very interesting scenario.

Vlad has a full NTC and most of his remaining money is a signing bonus paid in annual installments. Screwing Ed's wife whenever Vlad wants to might even be in the contract given how much Ed bent over.

Worst contract in MLB is a certainty, it's just a matter of if you want to go "worst contract in sports". I don't even think that's hyperbole. AJ Preller wouldn't even touch that contract.

No. Years and years from them even thinking about that

Before that there are a few things to try

1.  Swing reconstruction.

2. DL him more.  Hit by pitch 10 days off.  Back wonky 10 days off.  Hamstrings cramping 10 days off.  Try 130 healthy games a year.

3. Load manage him.  Treat him Barry Bonds style.

4. DH him way more if not all the time.

5. Completely new manager and coaching staff.

6. Get him off Ozempic(if he's on it) and back to keeping wait down by crazy fitness routine.

7.  Pump more iron.

8. Legal prescriptions for amphetimines (ADD meds)

probably 5-7 years to cycle through all this.

I think Atkins would get laughed off the phone. Tatis has been the better player this year, projects a bit better, makes 11M/year less, and his contract expires 5 years sooner than Vlad's.

This is the most underwater contract in MLB, and possibly in professional sports.

Oh it definitely has that chance.  I was talking about it before that anyone who has been given an absurd contract like this in any sport had a track record of being a generational like player.

Vlad has been pretty damn average for a 1st baseman for about half of his career.  I still dont think he realizes that this failure of a season is like 50% his fault alone.
