With him in the fold you can see the path to the playoffs. Cease is dealing, Soriano and Trey are providing strong starts most every turn, you hope Bieber bounces back some, and then Max just needs to show a pulse. That was all plausible, if a little unlikely. But replace Trey with SWR and Waldron? Yikes. Yeah it's been fun to see them play well, creep up in the standings and increase their chances but you have to be realistic too We just lost Yesavage while the Red Sox are getting Crochet back and the Yankees are getting multiple guys back.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted Wednesday at 04:57 PM Posted Wednesday at 04:57 PM We could still do it but we need Soriano to level up immediately now that he's free from the schackles of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. We need Bieber to find his form ASAP. Scherzer has to perform. SWR and Waldron need to stabilize the #5. And there is more pressure on the offense to turn things around in a big way. Banking these wins against the Phillies and Red Sox have been huge. Need to continue to play well until the schedule softens up later this month. jaysblue 1

It seems like every attempt the team makes at improving the rotation depth immediately blows up in their faces. Hey let's add Arrighetti at the deadline but then the foot issue immediately flares up again. Then Taillon was actually looking pretty good and BOOM he's out with forearm tendinitis. And worst of all Yesavage blows out his meniscus necessitating surgery. The club intended to run a 6 man rotation short term and then BAM 2 of those starters immediately hit the injured list. This is after Bieber and Yesavage both getting late starts to the season and losing Berrios and Ponce for nearly the entire year as well. This season is outright cursed rotation wise. Despite this beyond all odds they've somehow managed to squeak back into relevance working back to 2.5 games out of a wildcard spot largely thanks to how godawful the AL is this season. Yeah Trey, Taillon and Arrighetti all going down within a couple of days was a real kick in the nuts. If we continue to tighten things up I wonder if the Jays would do something crazy like promote Nolan Perry from AA to the bigs. A Ricky Tiedemann promotion as a 3 inning guy might be worth consideration as well. It would be the classic case of using whatever innings he's got left in the bigs and not the minors. Also, the extra pitcher from expanded rosters is going to help a lot. jaysblue, Spanky__99 and max silver 3

Heard Crochet likely will be used out of the pen when he gets back. Yankees are missing Judge and Bellinger pretty badly. Otherwise, Jays aren't catching either of those teams so it doesn't matter. Glad we're playing Boston without having to face a healthy Crochet and the Yankees without a healthy Judge/Belly.

He's only been pitching an inning at a time so far and it feels risky to push him beyond that.

I dont think anyone should be getting excited about a potential run or making the playoffs… this team just doesn’t have the players right now to do that. Too many injuries and underperformers Even during their recent good stretch the team hasn't hit well at all. I just don't see where the offense is going to come from, never mind the rotation issues that were outlined. Would love to be wrong though. The next 11 games against Boston, NYY, and Tampa (at least 3 losses since it's 3 in St. Pete) will be telling. If they go 6-5 in those 11 and no other team ahead of them goes on a run, then they might have a puncher's chance.

And i remember how excited we all were talking about how the rotation was super deep and we could easily weather an injury or 2 and still have a great starting 5. Baseball stinks sometimes

Laika Community Moderator Posted Wednesday at 08:33 PM Posted Wednesday at 08:33 PM The front office obviously thinks they have almost no realistic chance of getting in, judging from the lineups being fielded. Tonight: No Lukes, instead we get Bateman in RF. Playing the guy you want to get a look at over the reliable veteran makes sense if 2027 is the focus. You could also argue for Lukes over Sanchez. No Springer against a LHP. Sure they want Okamoto to DH because he's banged up but where is the f***ing urgency?

The assumption here is the Bieber and Woods Richardson are also injured, just not injured enough to go on the disabled list. Like therie arms have little tears (wear and tear) their ligaments are half attached (or not re-attached properly). They are injured. If Bieber and SWR are their 2025 version, or Waldron could be his 2024 version that would be good enough assuming other things go right. But yes, if these guys have barely attached arms or head (SWR 33-33 k/bb indicates a problem as does Bieber horrible k/bb) no chance... the chance is the chance that these guys are half functional. 13% or so.

If Jays get playoff odds to 20% the emergency playoff system needs to be activated. Ponce starts rehab games (he should already be getting ready to start rehab games just in case). Perry called up Keys called up Springer/Okamota/Vlad/Clemente - load managed. Tell them it's the playoffs already and they are going 2-on offday 3-on off-day 2-on 3 off days (like between series).... Smith given instructions to become a left handed jose bautista.

Lukes against LHP this season: .128/.226/.149 As for wanting Lukes starting over Sanchez, well, both suck against lefties, but Sanchez this season overall has a .748 OPS and has hit extremely well at Rogers Centre (.901 OPS), whereas Lukes with a .689 OPS. Springer has been banged up as well, and only way to get Okamato's bat in the lineup, had to be from the DH spot. This is why re-signing Springer for next season is a bad idea. It's nice to use the DH spot like how the Jays did tonight for Okamoto.

I would be shocked if the Jays resigned George. Would only consider it if they believe Santander is done/dead with a chronic shoulder injury.
