glory Old-Timey Member Posted May 31 Posted May 31 Is there a RH platoon bat that kills LHP and makes $11M a year? Seems like the ideal trade for Hoffman. I don’t even think Hoffman is bad, but I think he needs a change of scenery, especially as long as JS is the manager.

Someone like Bader or Soler would be great but i don't see why any "sellers" would want Hoffman for 1.5 seasons.
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted May 31 Posted May 31 Adolis Garcia for Hoffman trade could make sense if the Phillies think they can get Hoffman back to how he was with them.

He was 1-2 with an ERA of 40.50 in the 2024 NLDS. He had his moments but arguably lost them a playoff series. Actually pitched very well in the 2023 playoffs though.

jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted May 31 Posted May 31 Need to keep Hoffman in a 7th/8th inning role, period. Jays24 1
decosabute Verified Member Posted May 31 Posted May 31 Simply never want to see him pitch for us again. You know what'll happen from here. Schneider will go easy on him, he'll keep getting chances and he'll look OK again for another couple of weeks in low leverage spots. And then people will start saying "you know Jeff Hoffman is starting to look pretty good again lately". And then he'll get a pressure situation and he'll do this. Again and again and again the cycle will continue. Even if he still has utility as a 6th or 7th inning guy, I simply can't stand watching him anymore. Whether it's harsh or not, I simply can't stand his vacant facial expressions, his hangdog demeanor, his absolute lack of fight when the going gets tough. We should do anything we can to trade him - this project is simply done.

If Hoffman came in during the 7th with how much rope Schneider gave him the team would likely be losing before he was replaced. They had a precarious 1 run lead at that point, and with how quickly things unraveled for Hoffman there's nearly no chance that the Blue Jays would have still been leading by the time he was replaced even if the manager had a much quicker hook. Hoffman was given the easiest job of any of the relievers that came into the game as he was facing the bottom of the lineup with a 4 run lead. It's hindsight criticism to suggest that it's Schneider's fault that Hoffman picked a really bad time to experience a meltdown. Hoffman had pitched to a 1.64 FIP in the month of May and was looking the best he had as a Blue Jay since the month of April a season ago. You're right that Hoffman could've come in for the 7th and blown the game there and then, but for the management, at least they could then not be blamed for the decision. If Hoffman comes in instead of Rogers and f***s the game in the 7th then the blame is all on the pitcher, because as a decision in isolation, it's completely fine. Lower-leverage or not, holding him back to the 9th, invites the responsibility on to Schneider too. He's decided consciously that he wants to have Hoffman finish games and rehabilitate him, despite being bitten by the same dog over and over and over again. And then he compounds it by just sitting on his hands as it totally unravels. I'm still more annoyed at Hoffman than Schneider, but honestly, it's incredibly foolish management. This loyalty to absolute trash pitchers who constantly let him down may really cost Schneider his job. It has to stop right now. Only Rogers and Varland should be trusted with the 8th or 9th when they're available. You can maybe extend that to Fisher in a pinch or Garcia if he comes back in good shape. You can only have Hoffman there if the game is over already and he's eating innings. Really, he just needs to go for everyone's sake. Jays24 1

Rustanger Verified Member Posted May 31 Posted May 31 I understand JS's strategy. Have Varland face the Orioles 2, 3 and 4 batters and have Hoffman not have to face them. However, that's an all or nothing strategy. I would rather Hoffman implode in the 8th and have Varland ready to bail him out then Seabold. JS could have gone to Varland sooner once Hoffman's familiar walk, hits, HBP started happening. If Varland followed Hoffman there would have been a quicker hook. Jays24 1

Yeah it would have to be a team in contention that has a “bad contract” that fits the Jays needs a bit better. A bad team has no reason to do a bad contract swap unless incentivized in some way (or they’d just have to like Hoffman more than the guy they are giving up). Not likely. Sucks because Hoffman’s underlying numbers look good but JS doesn’t know how to use him, and I think the 9th inning yips are at least partially real. No chance I’d want Hoff anywhere near the 9th inning if it was a playoff situation.
Laika Community Moderator Posted May 31 Posted May 31 Horrendous game Geoff Hoffman has ninth inning PTSD and is also the world greatest ever meatball artist Win today and at least we can be happy with 3/4 against the turd birds Jays24 1

I could see a team thinking they could fix him then sell him for better prospects later. Hoff would probably turn right back into the Phillies version of himself on a low pressure team.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted May 31 Posted May 31 Hoffman can still be an effective reliever if he’s used properly. We saw him turn things around in May when he was primarily pitching in the 7th and 8th innings before yesterday’s hiccup. That said, he shouldn’t be closing games anymore unless Varland is unavailable. I know Hoffman picked up saves on May 21 and May 23, but that was because Varland wasn’t available. At this point, I’d even trust Fisher ahead of Hoffman if you need someone to close out a game.
