What happened I turned the game off

Hoffman tried to blow it by giving up 2 runs in the top of the 10th

Then Varsho walked it off with an opposite field grand slam

I mean when your stuff is bad and you are up against a nervous group of hackers, it makes sense. He probably locks it down with that pitch chart if he doesn't have to face Vlad and Kaz who were/are more patient.

Sosa and Clement are certainly slapping something at their eyeballs in play and Varsho was close to striking out (Brooks just didn't get the high FB inside enough). Straw probably pulls a 310 foot flyball on a high fastball.

Jays are last in walks.  Last in on base percentage.  Last in OPS+.  In the American League.

Last year they were first in on base percentage, third in walks.

They replaced Bo Bichette with Okamoto who gets more walks and same on base percentage.

So decline is injuries and other players not walking.

The combo of Giminez,  Clement and Sosa have 9 walks in 400 at bats

Last year those players (say Wagner was there instead of Sosa) got like 30 walks per 400 at bats.  Now they get 9.

Cito Gaston says you can't tell the boys to walk more because it will mess them up other ways.

Can you really have a team that has players that walk 2 times per 100 at bats though ?

Classic Geoff Huffman win

Why pitcher wins are whack

Cease 7 IP 1 run, left with the game tied

Hoffman 1 IP 2 runs, left with a 2 run deficit

Hoffman gets the win

Yeah it makes zero sense. I don’t care that the current rule is “last pitcher that pitched with the lead” gets the W. It needs a change.

It's technically not even the rule, it's just the scorer giving it to them every time regardless.

Win (W)

Definition

A pitcher receives a win when he is the pitcher of record when his team takes the lead for good -- with a couple rare exceptions. First, a starting pitcher must pitch at least five innings (in a traditional game of nine innings or longer) to qualify for the win. If he does not, the official scorer awards the win to the most effective relief pitcher.

When has that ever happened?  LOL

It happens if your team, say, takes the lead for good in the first inning but the SP only goes 3 innings.

It very rarely happens. I think it's called the "brief and ineffective" exception and it's fairly new.

I've seen it just a couple of times but the reliever needs to come in and just completely s*** the bed and cough up the lead for the scorer to take the win from him and give it to another reliever.

Here's one example: https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/36173995/oakland-chad-smith-gets-win-scorer-applies-obscure-rule

They probably just don't want to piss anyone off, they already get s*** on for giving borderline Errors against their own team.

Just remove pitching wins and loses altogether.  They have always been stupid and unnecessary.  Should Varsho get a "win" because he hit the walk off HR last night?  No - no he should not.

Teams get wins and loses, players do not.  They should remove them from goalie stats in hockey as well.

Yea the W is so dumb, just see King Felix. It's why we have WAR anyway.

Disagree with this.  It's a fun stat and people know now to take it with a grain of salt and it would still be used as a pseudo tie breaker.

Man it was fun watching Jack Morris get 20 wins.  First to do it for the Blue Jays.  Great to see Halladay get 20 wins in 2003.  Fun to Watch J.D. Happ do it in 2016.

And no they didn't give 2 of those 3 a Cy Young.

After watching Pluribus, with a subscription that was meant for Friday night baseball, but used to watch other shows as baseball no longer brought joy,  I wonder if there a slow moving alien virus going around creating a hive mind.  I remember a poster, not sure if he still posts loved to call a certain faction of this fine community 'the hive mind'.

Here are some of the things the hive mind seems to like

1.  Eliminate all low level minor league teams in rural and northern U.S. and move all to efficient labs in Florida with games at 10:00, 2:30 and 7:00.

2.  Eliminate pitchers wins.  The win is collective.

3.  Eliminate historical discussions of team performance like the recent 'Are Boston Red Sox losers' discussion which was closed.  All discussions must efficiently focus on the hive's goals.

What are the hives goals?  I am not sure yet.  They are still somewhat human I think, and they enjoy discussing baseball, just in a sort of collective way and get annoyed at those of us who are immune to the collective virus.

Just assign the W to the pitcher with the highest WPA in the game, on the team that won. Same for the L.

Also, add a new stat - hitter wins and losses.

Basically just translates WPA, a stupid nerd stat that only f***ing nerds care about, into a classic man stat with hair on its chest that any steak eating American can wrap their tough head around.

Wins last night: Varsho, Cease
Losses: Brooks, Simpson

flawless stat
